Re: KuReshtin's Vociferously Ruminating Harbinger of Random Banter - #147
Well it's true.
We've got a lot to do
Is it one lump or two
For you our guest?
She's our guest
She's our guest
No guesses where I am.
Course by curse
One by one
'til you shut
Enough I'm stuffed
Then we sing you off to sleep
As you digest

Yeah, voting is quick, but getting informed takes time, the amount of difference it would make is negligible (See apathy), so I'd rather spend my time in more enioyable pursuits.
Also, this may be dangerously close to forbidden topics (Though this is in fact one of the reasons I love the GitP ban on political discussion)."'But there's still such a lot to be done...'
YES. THERE ALWAYS IS."

Re: KuReshtin's Vociferously Ruminating Harbinger of Random Banter - #147
The iconic scene iust finished. And it's as beautiful as it was the first time I seen it.
I know it's CGI in parts, but no way does it look it.
Tale as old as time
True as it can be
Barely even friends
Then somebody bends
Unexpectedly
Iust a little change
Small to say the least
Both a little scared
Neither one prepared
Beauty and the beast
Ever iust the same
Ever a surprise
Ever as before
Ever iust as sure
As the sun will rise
Tale as old as time
Tune as old as song
Bittersweet and strange
Finding you can change
Learning you were wrong
Certain as the sun
Rising in the east
Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the beast
Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the beast
Curse you, award winning, ear wormy, awesomely sweet and romantic song!
And bring on the mood whiplash!
Bathatar!
Squid bones are lies.

Re: KuReshtin's Vociferously Ruminating Harbinger of Random Banter - #147
Gaston is one of Disney's scariest ever villains.
He's obsessive and will do anything to get Belle. Even to the point of bribing the asylum officer (who has the same voice as Iudge Claude Frollo) to falsely imprison Belle's father all to blackmail her into marrying him.
And then when his plan fails he uses his natural charisma and popularity to warp Belle's words into making the Beast a monster, and convinces the entire town to ioin together to murder the Beast.
Because he couldn't get a woman when everyone wanted Gaston. Except Belle.
Not to mention he's an inveterate coward who stabs the Beast in the back after being granted clemency.
Gaston is a twit, and a ierk and more than a little stupid - I'll excuse that though because literacy in C18th France wasn't exactly high. And a monster. And it's all because of his looks. He's iust a human, but look at what he could do.
He doesn't even have any real power - unlike Frollo - and yet he did all that to get hold of Belle.
And then three or four years later we got The Hunchback of Notre Dame with a very similar theme.
EDIT:
But it has a better score and awesome uses of Church Latin. Bilingual bonuses.
PLus a Belle cameo in "Out There". And a despicable villain. And wonderful imagery.
I think it's a cleverer film than Beauty and the Beast.
Have I mentioned the score yet? Because it's iawdroppingly fantastic, complex and powerful.Last edited by CurlyKitGirl; 2010-09-19 at 07:31 PM.

Re: KuReshtin's Vociferously Ruminating Harbinger of Random Banter - #147
Well doy.
When it comes to Disney, and most musicals full stop, the villains always get one of the best songs - if not the best - in the entire film.
There are exceptions, as there always are. Take Beauty and the Beast:
While I love the titular song, Gaston's Song, The Mob Song and Be Our Guest are equally as good.
With The Lion King I'd take Be Prepared over every song except The Circle of Life.
It's a shame some villains don't get songs, but it doesn't always suit the character. Shan Yu would be nowhere near as terrifying as he is if he'd been given a song. This goes for The Horned King and Maleficent too.
And as far as Hunchback goes . . . there's a reason why everyone remember Frollo better than everything else.
He commits his first evil act only 3:30 into the film, he's a very complex villain, and a literal genocidal maniac.
And he gets to sing Hellfire
Hellfire, dark fire
This fire in my skin
This burning desire
Is turning me to sinLast edited by CurlyKitGirl; 2010-09-19 at 07:42 PM.

Re: KuReshtin's Vociferously Ruminating Harbinger of Random Banter - #147
Yep!
You can also say the same of Frollo's but at least he believes what he's doing is right.
Argh. The Feast of Fools segment. I'll post this afterwards. I'm almost twenty, and I've never been able to watch this whole piece. It's too cruel.
I CAN'T DO IT!!
I muted it.
I iust can't watch the entire sequence.
Fleeing that scene, I have to say that I've had a wonderful revelation.
The novel is Notre Dame de Paris because the cathedral was the main character. And in the Disney film, during Frollo's genocidal ant crushing scene, the scene panning over to Frollo's villain song, and during many, many key points to this film Notre Dame looms over the city, in the background, as if iudging the people of Paris.
And then when Frollo dies it is because the stonework of Notre Dame came to life. Notre Dame is the one who saved Quasimodo and Esmerelda and all of Paris.
Notre Dame is one of the most important characters and locations in this film. This would also provide an explanation for those damnable gargoyles. They're manifestations of Notre Dame herself.
'Course, one could still go with the 'they're hallucinations of Quasimodo' theory. Or both at once perhaps.
The idea of Notre Dame being a living character would also explain how one (or four) people were able to defend Notre Dame from the initial seige; Notre Dame was literally defending herself.
Argh, but the Feast of Fools scene makes me cringe. It's horrific, and that's the point, but the whiplash and utter cruelty of that scene.
Clopin in that sequence is, like Gaston, egging the crowd on in their cruel mistreatment of Quasimodo, and Frollo, his guardian, sits back and watches.
And nobody cares.
Nobody except Esmerelda.
While I'm on her, I like her. She's cool. If more than a little stripper-ish.
And on the dating of this film:
it's fourteenth century France. And that one throwaway line "I was summoned back from the wars to deal with [gypsies]" implies that the King and most of the really important people are away, hence Frollo's being able to burn down the city in a lustful pursuit. And basically do as he wishes for twenty odd years.
For that dating, Phoebus says "Come back after twenty years" giving us a rough age for Quasimodo. Canonically, Esmerelda is sixteen, but here she could be about eighteen.
And this would date Phoebus at a minimum of thirty-six, assuming he was recruited (or even conscripted) at sixteen. There are stories of fourteen-year-old fighting.
Either way, if we go by her canon age, and dating Phoebus at about thirty-five . . . that's a pretty big age gap.
This would also put Frollo at about fiftyish, and the archdeacon at maybe sixty, sixty-five.
And I adore "God Help the Outcasts". Such a beautiful ballad.
Not to mention the dropdead gorgeous (and accurate) art of the inside of Notre Dame. Or the fact that the zoom in on the rose window is perfectly accurate.
They did their research on this place.
And it shows. Beautifully.
The art and soundtrack for this entire film is perfect.
Except the gargoyles.
And their "song".
