    I believe that's called metaphorgotten.

Anyways, I still like those albums, but I'm a classic rock kind of guy. Metal is a passion, but I still like AC/DC, Guns'N'Roses, the Sex Pistols, Van Halen, Judas Priest, ZZ Top, and far too many other bands. But I still love Metallica and Megadeth. My biggest issue is the really harsh, depressing metal. That stuff rubs me the wrong way.

I only got into Metallica upon hearing Battery. That song is epic. But Ride the Lightning remains a favorite of mine forever.

    Oh, and The Scorpions forever.

Oh, and I'm sure the Butterfly Effect would make sure Iron Maiden and Earth never existed too.
Wait, what? You do realize that Maiden predate Metallica right? That's like saying that going back in time to kill someone prevents that person's parents from existing. Science fiction does not work that way.

I honestly think that their influence is greatly overstated. Look at the modern day Thrash revival. Now come up with a list of bands from that movement who are closer musically to Metallica than they are to Exodus, Slayer, or Kreator. I'll save you some time, and inform you that the list will consist solely of Evile. Now look out at Metal as a broader whole. Add in Maiden and Priest on the more melodic side, and Sabbath on the doomy side, and once again you will essentially eclipse Metallica's influence, though you might be able to add Trivium to the list, so that's something I guess.

What little influence they have had has been, in my opinion, largely negative. I honestly can't think of any element of their music that couldn't be have been lifted in a superior form from their predecessors in Maiden and Priest, or their contemporaries in Exodus and Slayer.

Oh god so much this, though in my experience SOAD rarely comes up. Are you still in high school, or do you think it's just something about where you live? Anyway, here's the beginning of an average conversation about my musical tastes.

Person: *Looking at my shirt* So, is Iron Maiden, like, a band?
Me: *twitch* Yes. They're a Heavy Metal band.
Person: Metal... So I guess you like Metallica then?

    or...

Person: What sort of music do you like?
Me: Well, I'm a pretty big Heavy Metal fan.
    Person: So, what, like Metallica?

It's more than a little depressing.

I honestly wish American Thrash had never happened. Pantera and Metallica can go die in a hole. They're really overrated.

I've heard the term "candy metal", as referred to something being immediately appealing because of a melodic "sweetness" (so, not necessarily a derogatory term).
By this reasoning, Ancient God of Evil is candy metal.

    Also, Wintersoul are pretty cool.

There are some very clearly metal riffs in there, but often times drone skirts around the boundaries of metal.

Oh, I see your problem. You consider Pantera and Metallica thrash. Pantera is groove metal, not thrash. Metallica has one thrash album (KEA), but then veered away. I would even call Master of Puppets proto-groove. Just listen to some of those riffs; they don't sound anything like thrash. Aside from those bands though, the American metal scene was quite respectable. Overkill, Exodus and Slayer were all great in their own way. Also, although nobody seems to mention them, DARK ANGEL were part of the American thrash movement, and I don't want to imagine life without Darkness Descends.

And, if anyone in the board likes Death Metal (which I'm beginning to question, since nobody seems to ever talk about it...) then we can't forget about the fact that with no American thrash scene, there would have been no American DM scene. Death would never have released Scream Bloody Gore if there was no American Thrash scene, and that would have sucked.

As I said before, thrash spawned extreme metal more or less. Possessed's Seven Churches = death/thrash. Early Bathory = black/thrash. Boom.

Actually, I don't exactly consider Pantera Thrash, but in my head they're one of these American bands that sound kinda what I think of when I see a lot of American Heavy Metal (that isn't metalcore) and kinda somehow associate it with "Thrash." Which is... yeah.

But Pantera really bugs me. They're not very good, and everyone here seems to love them. Everyone. Even the people that don't like heavy metal. It bothers me.

I have mixed feelings about death metal. On one hand, I like Melodeath, a LOT and I love everything about heavy music live. But, on the other hand, I really don't like Death metal. Mostly lyrically (yeah, I find it kinda creepy hearing people talk about gore. I realize lyrics are often meaningless, but that still creeps me out), but musically as well. I understand why Death Metal is important, (and Thrash for that matter), but I don't like them. I like what they spawned.

Melodeath is basically loud heavy metal with growls. Anyway, if death metal creeps you out, I suggest you never listen to Ash Pool.

But at least in those cases I could explain that I wouldn't consider those sorts of bands the best representatives of the genre without coming off as nearly so much of a hipster douchebag as I probably do when trying to disassociate my metal preferences from the monolithic pop-culture icon that is Metallica.

And that's ignoring the fact that I do actually kind of like Avenged Sevenfold. I got into them as a result of learning that Mike Portnoy had done the drumming on their latest album though, so I still get to keep my metal elitist street cred.

Swedish DM all the way, while i dig some of the florida stuff, the swedis hstuff is really mroe technical and I prefer the bands that it has spawned to those that florida spawned. That said i really dig old thrash in particular Exhorder. Also Dark angel is jazzy exodus!

That's black metal with a crust punk and death metal influence and melodies that are in line with stuff the band has done before. It's also not a great album.

Yeah, sure. That means early melodeath is black metal with crust and death metal influences, too.

If we're gonna do this let's do it right.

Old School Death Metal Battle (1987-1995): Florida vs Sweden!

    Florida:
Death, Atheist, Cynic, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Nocturnus, Deicide, Malevolent Creation, Cannibal Corpse

    Sweden:
Dismember, Entombed, Grave, At the Gates, Therion, Dark Tranquillity, Edge of Sanity

    FIGHT! Discuss.

Note: Yes yes, my lists could have been much longer and I'm sure everyone's would be slightly different, but I feel these are the bands that best represent their respective locations. I made that judgment based on band visibility (my thoughts on music quality were not a factor). And feel free to include in the discussion whatever bands you consider relevant. I'll chip in later, assuming anyone has bothered commenting.
It began - and ends - with Pylon. Pylon stands in the doorway, beckoning me in.

    i really dig them

i think that people like them due to their cool combination of Classic/Blues Rock and awesome riffage while keeping a nice southern influence

I will totally check this out later maybe kinda depends on if I'm listening to loads of Sigh. o_o Though I am seriously biased towards Swedeath and am not nearly as much of a connoisseur of DM as I am of BM and also noise.

I wonder what deeper meaning those can infer on the eclectic art of ear-cleaning. Though it's pretty clear which boundaries are getting expanded by the extra thick cotton tip

I don't particularly care for 'em. *shrug*

Hate to burst your bubble, but Dream Theater is hardly "metal elitist" material.

Indubiously. In fact, I have it on good authority that listening to Sunn O))) when yer stoned makes you feel like you're on the Millennium Falcon.

I find it deeply ironic when metal and punk kids break out the "that's not music, that's noise!" shtick. I thought that was for radio programmers in the 50s.
