Re: Metal Thread VI: We're So Kvlt, We Have Frostbite On Our Devil Horn Fingers
What I described has actually been posited by some scientists as a potential scenario for the eventual "end of the universe." It's called the Big Rip Theory. It is also related to the Big Freeze/Heat Death of the Universe. I may have misspoke slightly with the phrase "cold bite of utter nothing," as temperature does not have to reach absolute zero, or indeed any fixed value at all. Rather, temperature becomes uniform throughout the universe, which prevents work from being done, and hence renders motion and life impossible.
Going back to the musical pigeonholing that this tortured metaphor is supposed to represent, I suppose that it means that there would be no way to progress beyond Tier 7 unless there were to be another Big Bang, like on that one episode of Futurama, to effectively "restart" the cosmos, which, I imagine, would put us back into the most banal recesses of Tier 0 pop territory, as others have already suggested.
Which brings us to the next point.
Bam.

Re: Metal Thread VI: We're So Kvlt, We Have Frostbite On Our Devil Horn Fingers
For what it's worth, I think that Paegan Terrorism Tactics is probably the better album, but both of the albums have weak points.
Of course, I'll probably invalidate most of my opinions further on in this post. w/e.
i don't actually recall hearing that before but I am intensely familiar with that chorus
Regardless, this is much more my speed.

Acid Bath, you have to be in a sorta rock & roll mood for. I used to like 'em way more than I currently do to be honest; their riffs just aren't as tasty as Eyehategod's. But Daxx Rigs has a goddam great voice, no denying that.
Vis a vis High On Fire, I trust you've heard Sleep. Holy Mountain is required listening for any sludge/stoner/doom/drone fan.
I love that song. But there's a certain unmusicalness to the whole thing that gives me the impression that it's kinda on the other side of noise from conventional music.

Re: Metal Thread VI: We're So Kvlt, We Have Frostbite On Our Devil Horn Fingers
I'm sitting at Tier Four and happy about it.
Though i have to ask does it still count if i still listen to just about everything on Tier Four and bellow?
Also i have to thank Faulty for inadvertently pointing me to Dark Tranquility, those guys are pretty awesome!

I happen to be skirting tier 7 myself (if Gnaw their Tongues is considered tier 7), but mostly I'm firmly entrenched into tier 6. I might go as low as tier 2 ( I have a secret admiration of power metal for it's silliness.)

Obviously, to Tier 8.

Tier 8 is actually quite a leap, and can only be achieved by reaching a level of extranormal consciousness.
In other words, this.

Re: Metal Thread VI: We're So Kvlt, We Have Frostbite On Our Devil Horn Fingers
I know I'll probably lose whatever respect anyone might have had for me by saying this, but I'm seriously considering buying this. I understand they aren't that great but I still really like them since they were the first band to get me into metal.
Anyways, to try and restore my metal honor, here's a link to a band I've been listening to a lot recently. Horn of the Rhino I think they're sludge, maybe. I hadn't seen them mentioned yet, and I really like their singer's voice, so I thought I'd share.

Re: Metal Thread VI: We're So Kvlt, We Have Frostbite On Our Devil Horn Fingers
It's over-the-top and silly, but I've got fond memories of listening to Sonic Firestorm back in high school. I'd never pick up a new DF album, though.
Yes, yes it is. But you're crazy, man. Whenever an Ulver album comes out, I have to pick it up immediately. I can hardly wait a month, let alone half a decade.
Also, check out this 2004 Ulver track. ...woooooaaahhh!

About the tier list, I'm probably Tier 3.5. I mostly listen to prog metal and NWOBHM, but I can enjoy some of the Tier 4 stuff, especially "folk and Viking metal that leans toward the melodic".

Re: Metal Thread VI: We're So Kvlt, We Have Frostbite On Our Devil Horn Fingers
Awesome!
I have the misfortune of owning a Dragonforce shirt my sister gave to me for Christmas. I haven't worn it yet, mostly because it's too small. I had an April Fool's prank to dye my hair black, take a trashy phone cam picture with a mirror with me wearing the shirt doing the lame thumb out metal salute and saying Dragonforce is as legit as it gets.
Turned out to be allergic to the hair dye.

Just saw The Avengers. Tony Stark was wearing a Black Sabbath Never Say Die t-shirt throughout most of the movie. It looked badass, but what a weird album to choose, amirite?

Lyrically speaking, I'm fairly certain that Graveflower is as good as Acid Bath gets.
... to be perfectly honest, everything about Graveflower is as good as Acid Bath gets. So much doom.

Re: Metal Thread VI: We're So Kvlt, We Have Frostbite On Our Devil Horn Fingers
Acid Bath's lyrics are totally what make it for me. Graveflower's great but there's a certain impressionism and absurdity to The Blue that I've always really liked.
"I have fallen deep in love with the sky/Fragments of a sunbeam glowing on kitchen knife" is quality content.Last edited by Moff Chumley; 2012-05-11 at 02:00 AM.

Re: Metal Thread VI: We're So Kvlt, We Have Frostbite On Our Devil Horn Fingers
Heh yeah, but see, I never bothered with Ulver after listening to their first two albums. And then someone was all "Ulver dark ambient oooh" so I decided to try it. Damn good decision.

Re: Metal Thread VI: We're So Kvlt, We Have Frostbite On Our Devil Horn Fingers
I understand completely. There are so many gems scattered among those two albums... some of them are just outright absurd and over-the-top and just intensely enjoyable to hear, and others are oddly poignant.
SpoilerEating dead flowers, bleeding in a strange daze
I was cutting throats and eating tears, smiling in a ruined ageSedated and lazy, cold skies full of blue
The sun burns forever, it reminds me of youI met an angel with a sawed-off shotgun wanted by the FBI
We dropped some acid, killed our parents
then we hit the roadI burrow through the dust in your skull
But I cannot seem to find your soulCome on and sterilize me
Kneel down and idolize me
Suck me, **** me, resurrect me
Rut me, cut me and infect me
Slice me, dice me, I wanna die screaming
The thoughts of dead babies wiped away with my semen. She screams bloody murder as they chop off her fingers
"So this is how it feels to die"
But it's okay
I dunno. I was never intensely interested in the whole "intensely misanthropic and morbid" aesthetic, but something about Dax Rigg's lyrics work for me. I've grown to realize that they're probably an acquired taste, though.
