Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
I've never gotten all the way through a Dream Theater album, so I'm skipping the first one.
2. Reign in Blood
3. Blackwater Park
4. The Number of the Beast... I came to appreciate that mountains make poor receptacles for dreams.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
While I love Opeth, I understand that the Opeth hatewagon is something people love to jump on. I think the main reason it made it past the first round is because it went up against a fairly unknown album. I feel like in a lot of these cases, people are voting for the album they know instead of checking out the one they don't to give it a fair shake. Really, how many of you actually checked out Altar, Mabool, or the Agalloch albums? I'm giving you a whole week to vote and YouTube is a click away!
Ahem. /soapbox
As far as Horror Show is concerned, I voted for it because my fiancee's and my mutual ownership of Horror Show is what first got her interested in me. So, y'know, there's a bit of sentimental value in it for me. But honestly, I have no idea how it didn't get crushed by a classic like Powerslave.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
I actually knew all of the round 1 albums beforehand, so I could make an informed decision. The problem is choosing my personal favourites instead of the objectively more influential album (if that is even possible, heh).
Take Blackwater Park v Horror Show; Blackwater Park is probably the better album, all other things being equal. But Horror Show was the album that actually got me hooked on metal, so it's hard not to be sentimental towards it.
Scenes v Wildhoney, though. I've heard it said of both that they are of the best, if not the best metal albums ever produced. And they're up against each other. For shame.
And I'm surprised Mabool or at least one Agalloch album didn't survive the first round.Awesome fremetar by wxdruid.
From the discomfort of truth there is only one refuge and that is ignorance. I do not need to be comfortable, and I will not take refuge. I demand to *know*.
So I guess I have an internets? | And a trophy. | And a music cookie (whatever that is).

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
Yeah #2 is really tough (and makes me realize I totally forgot Black Sabbth on my top 10 - it's one of those bands you just take for granted). Slayer marginally wins for me, since I actually think Paranoid is a relatively weak SB album (heavy emphasis on relative here: it's still awesome overall, of course).

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
I suppose there's a good chance an easily accessible power metal album from 2001 would be among the earliest metal albums a bunch of metalheads (mostly) in their early-to-mid 20s would have bought, giving Horror Show a solid chance for a high number of those 'sentimental value' votes.
And I'm surprised Mabool or at least one Agalloch album didn't survive the first round.
The biggest surprise to me is Wildhoney's survival, even though it technically wasn't an upset. I thought this thread's high population of melodeath fans indicated a beatdown of the Tiamat album. Even so, the only reason it won was because I seeded albums by seniority once it got down to 'two vote' albums and Wildhoney was released 2 years before The Jester Race, making the tie in favor of Tiamat.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
I've heard everything off of Mabool at least a few times before, and I would say that it's weaker than The Never Ending Way of Orwarrior, and certainly won't overcome my love for Number of the Beast. I've tried to get into Agalloch on several occasions, and just can't do it. As for Sunn O))) and Boris, well, yeah...
As for Horror Show, I'd say it stands up pretty well on its own merits. No, I don't think it's as good as Powerslave, but I do think it's better than Blackwater Park, Paranoid, and Reign in Blood put together* so at this point I'm rooting for it to make the finals.
Similarly, I'd argue that Holy Diver is a legitimate classic independent of any sentimental attachment to Dio himself.
*I actually really like Blackwater Park, and view Paranoid favorably, but still.

Wintersun... is touring North America... and for some unknown reason, they're ACTUALLY COMING TO MY CITY!!!!!!1!!!one!!! Holy ****ing ****, I'm actually going to see Wintersun live....
Speaking of which, I don't think it is possible for Time 1 to meet my unreasonably high expectations. Whatever, at least I'll be able to see them perform Winter Madness live.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
I don't know, I listened to the teaser for one of the tracks, and it looks like it might have what I call 'Nightfall in Middle Earth Syndrome(tm).' That's when the music is completely overproduced, the vocals are too layered, and there's so much orchestration that you can't even hear the riffs (if there are any). From what I heard, it just seemed super symphonic. Although, to be fair, I can't really tell from a 20 second clip.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
Yeah, I'm sort of on the 'radical puritan' side of BG fans (my favorite albums are Somewhere far Beyond and Battalions of Fear), but I see how Night at the Opera works as an analogy as well.
Also, that seems perfectly reasonable, and I was more using this as an opportunity to bash Nightfall than anything else. I can't really know what Time will sound like at all, but knowing Jari, it'll be good.
On an entirely separate note, are there any Voivod fans in the Playground? I've been sort of getting into them lately. So far I have listened to Killing Technology, Dimension Hatross and Nothingface, and they are all excellent in different ways. Also I just like spacey sounding riffs, and there's not enough of them in metal :)
