Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
So Matt Barlow has a new band with some other vaguely relevant people and they've released a song. It's Iced Earth-lite (Slushed Moon?) through and through, and as someone who really likes Schaffer's lyrics, I'm finding the sequence of words they're tossing out here are a little weak, but Barlow's voice is as great as ever and there are certainly worse bands to rip off than Iced Earth.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
i forgot to say this in the earlier silliness but
i just found out my mom went to elementary school and middle school with Van Williams (yes, the dude from Nevermore)
like
my mom did crayon drawings with a guy who toured on the same package as Death? HOW METAL IS THAT?

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
So Barlow didn't want to make music with Iced Earth, but he's making music with some other dudes? That's not cool, man
I'll check it out anyway, I'm a fan of his voice.
Also: Slushed Moon, heh.
Also, I listened to Fen a lot over the weekend, and I came to the conclusion that they're actually not all that great. Sure, Epoch is a good album, but the others just don't do anything for me. They did however get me hooked on Wodensthrone, which is great.Last edited by Feytalist; 2013-07-22 at 05:19 AM.

I don't think I've heard Epoch, but I loved The Malediction Fields and thought it was an awesome album. Having heard their latest record, Dustwalker, though, I wasn't as impressed.
Have never heard of Wodensthrone, though if they're anything like Fen, I might have to give them a listen.

I rather like them, actually. I went to see them and they were pretty great. Actually, the were performing with Wodensthrone and Agalloch that day.
It was a good day.
This needs to change.Last edited by Nameless; 2013-07-23 at 05:34 PM.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
Got new Vreid. Listened to new Vreid. I think I went "holy ****" like 12 times through the whole album. Man, this is excellent. With every release I like Vreid more and more. They've got this laid-back groove that's especially evident on this album, but still retain that black metal aggressiveness. And the guitar work is just masterful. Strom is a master. This is, like, true black'n'roll.
Windir was great, but I think Vreid is even better.
It's good, innit. And it totally comes out of left field, even if you're used to Orphaned Land. And Kobi has surprisingly good clean vocals.
Dustwalker was a serious meh. But yeah, check out Wodensthrone. It's kind of how I want Fen to sound all the time.
Yeah, I remember you mentioning it. I also remember I envied you, like, this much (you can't see it, but I'm holding my arms like 5km apart).
I liked them at first. And like I said, Epoch is pretty good. But their other stuff just isn't as good as it should be.Last edited by Feytalist; 2013-07-24 at 03:13 AM.

You heartless devil, you.
Oh I forgot, I also got the new Ereb Altor yesterday (I hadn't even heard of them before last week week). It's... pretty okay. A bit Darkthrone-tastic for me, but a couple of songs has that old Viking Bathory-like charm that I like so much. So, I probably won't check out their other stuff, but it's a decent addition to my collection.Awesome fremetar by wxdruid.

So has there been any good power metal this year? I haven't been able to find much metal recently.
I have found Myrath though, they're pretty good.Rational Goblin Avatar by C-Lam. Thanks!

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
Well, it was certainly a grower. At first, I liked the beginning, but it began to lose me into the mid-section and towards the end. Gave it a couple more listens and enjoyed the whole thing more thoroughly. I can see where the Fen comparisons come in, if evidently lighter on the post-rock vibe.
On another note, I've been listening to a lot of My Dying Bride lately. Anybody into them? Anybody give their latest album a try?

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
There hasn't really been a great Power Metal album yet this year that I know of, but it's been a good year for traditional NWOBHM, which is close. In terms of new blood, Holy Grail's new record is pretty great, and White Wizzard's is solid as well, while out of the old guard, there was a reunion of a band called Satan after 25 years complete with the best album of their career. As of right now, Ride the Void and Life Sentence are contenders for my AotY.
There is stuff to look forward to on the Power Metal front though. The release of the debut from Matt Barlow's new Iced Earth-only-not band is coming in September, and there's a new actual Iced Earth album slated for October.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
If you listened to Curse, then the last song, Name of the Wind, is simply amazing.
I dig My Dying Bride, yeah. If you're talking about A Map of All Our Failures, I've got it. It's... well, it's good. It's just that their old stuff is so much better. Turn Loose the Swans and The Angel and the Dark River are still two of my favourite albums. But yeah, their music is so deliciously slow and ponderous.
Oh! Check out The Barghest O' Whitby, the EP they did last year. It's pretty good.
I've heard good things about the new White Wizzard, yeah. Also the new Satan, which I've heard bits of. Sounded rocking. Also the new Powerwolf, which I've never heard of before but sounds pretty good.
Oh, and does Stratovarius count? Remember that they released Nemesis way back at the start of the year, and it is amazing.
And I'm also eagerly looking forward to the new Iced Earth.Awesome fremetar by wxdruid.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
Awesome, thanks y'all. Any power metal similar to Sabaton, Symphony X, and etc? I tend to find some (but not all) power metal bands start to sound a bit samey after a while, and listening to the more "niche" power metal bands seems to stave that off.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
Most power metal I listen to these days is old power metal. Recently listened to a bit of old Hammerfall again. Pretty fun in small doses. Sometimes you just need some uncomplicated cheesiness.
So I had to explain the concept of a face-melting riff to a co-worker yesterday. Eventually, and sort of out of reflex, I pointed him to Iced Earth's Wolf, from Horror Show, and the solo from Dream Theater's In the Name of God, from Train of Thought (those were the ones I could remember, offhand). Any others I could have gone with? For future reference, of course, and totally not for my own enjoyment
Also, how do you adequately describe facemeltery?Awesome fremetar by wxdruid.
