Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
SpoilerI think it's telling that this ep was paired with "The Vault", so props.
Also, the next episode is about Finn training with his sword, so it's probably going to be fun.

Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
The more we learn about PB, the more it's showcased that she burned a lot of bridges in getting the Candy Kingdom into the mostly safe-ish place it is now. Building a legion of super-effective fighting robots dedicated to her only to cull them all when they become obsolete is a pretty morally grey move, but it's probably more telling that their replacements are nigh infantile, and because PB is more then capable at making decently sane life, it's probably intentional on her part. Heck, now we know that she's alway's had the ability to make really good robotic defenders but hasn't done so in hundreds of years because she didn't like the violence they caused among themselves.
Ah, P-Bubs: dresses like a Disney princess and rules over a brightly colored kingdom of living edibles, while also having ruled over it for almost a thousand years through Machiavellian plotting and the occasional removal of those she doesn't find necessary to exist from the mortal coil.

Um, you are forgetting the robots were killing each other.
It's not that they were obsolete, it's that they were unstable killing machines.

Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
Princess Bubblegum becomes scarier and scarier the more we know about her. She's a well-meaning but ruthless dictator that rules her people as a goddess, willing to eschew all of her feelings and compassion in order to keep her kingdom running smoothly and happy...which would be kind of OK if it wasn't for the fact that her subjects are also her creations, which she has made child-minded and eternally dependant on her, ensuring that she will forever have to keep denying her own feelings and making horrible sacrifices.
I mean, she is basically a super-intelligent child who is playing dolls with a whole kindom of toy people. And she's denying her own feelings and doing horrible things in order to keep playing dolls forever.
I wonder when will Finn awake to how scary Bubblegum is.Last edited by Clistenes; 2014-01-31 at 04:37 PM.

Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
They pretty clearly killed those rock creatures. I get the impression that Bubblegum was already worried about them when she infiltrated their fighting ring (that's why she was there in the first place).
Granted, the execution scene was still pretty creepy.
That's remarkably apt.
She does seem to be getting better about it with her reformation of the Banana Guard... but then she goes ahead and secretly unleashes a vigilante swordsbot on her kingdom. So, one step forward, one step back?

Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
what.
SpoilerThis episode was pretty . . . eh? CB has never, ever to my recollection being portrayed as even remotely competent before, let alone anything close to this. I hope there is some explanation in a later episode, because this felt just annoying, like a bad fan fiction. Yes, it acknowledged the weirdness of the situation, but that doesn't make it any less weird.

Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
SpoilerThis episode...
I liked it, actually.
CB's sudden boost in general ability to function seems to be pretty directly tied to him spending time in the Fire Kingdom, with him starting out 'half baked' and all that. I mean, this is the guy who's been possessed by a demon and has been Bubblegum's other helper from day one, so him actually being somewhat competent when fully there in the head might not be too farfetched. I admit I didn't like how smoothly everything got wrapped up, though.
Also, Finn's kind of regressing into his old habits, and FP seemed to notice that. I think you could sum the episode up with that scene of the three of them standing in front of the gate, where Finn's eager to rush in and show off his sword and FP and CB trying to convince him otherwise. The exact opposite situation happened in the Vault of Bones, pretty much.
Really, I'm just wondering how FP was drinking tea. Does it just boil when she drinks it, or is it lava or something?
Unrelated to this episode:
SpoilerWell, the writers have a chance at redeeming themselves with the next episode; it's titled 'Betty'.

Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
Do believe my comments about the episode can be summed up as
Spoiler"Did CB just show me up?" paraphrased.
A bit annoyed, Finn has been written kinda punky lately(especially in Rattleballs). I'd like to see him back to rescuing princesses and stuff.Don't know your name but bring the pain.

Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
Id say it works because what happened in the past isn't really continuity, as the characters were not interacting with it. Its continuity that it happened, but it doesn't involve character development.
Except for "When I don't remember you" song. That part was fantastic.
Otherwise the characters just reset every once in a while. Thats when I realised its not worth taking them seriously. Pendleton ward is afraid of committing to it.

Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
SpoilerCinnamon has been half-baked for the longest time, by the word of Jake and he's remarkably soft by his own previous admission.
...He's been in the Fire Kingdom for so long not but incapable of getting burned. Cinnamon Bun might just legitimately be fully baked now and this was what he was always meant to be like.Warriors & Wuxia: A community world-building project focused on low-magic wuxia/kung-fu action using ToB.

Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
SpoilerExactly, CB is too old for FP. I kind of understood the whole "was half-baked but is now fully-cooked" character development given where he's been, even if it was a little too smooth. But FP is still 15... at least she didn't explicitly reciprocate his feelings. Still... creepy

Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
Of course the obvious question is why PB never bothered to fully bake him.
I mean she has no qualms about modifying her subjects or cloning better versions from scratch. So logically there'd need to be some reason she never tried to finish him up and have someone actually smart and competent under her. Though of course if Cinnamon Bun isn't fully baked and is still only just slightly warmer, then one wonders exactly how much better he'd be fully baked.
Though on this episode, this episode was awful. Finn gets the same episodes beat into him every week and they never stick. He's actually getting worse, if anything. The next episode better be good, or I'm straight up dropping the series.

Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
THATS why continuity sucks so much in AT.
They do a touching maturity episode....or five.... AND BAM! The character is doing the exact same shlock as before.
I remember a touching review of dungeon train and talking about how JAKE was maturing as a father.....Followed by the episode where Jake acts like a brain dead baby in the Red Starved episode.
Its just not worth getting invested to the characters if they flip flop all the time.

Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
Sometimes it seems Adventure Time is two shows
One light-hearted comedy
One more serious dramatic piece that must work through the filter of light-hearted kid-friend comedy.
That said, I did not care for this episode.
Finn was reverting to his Creepy behavior from earlier in the series, which was really uncomfortable to see in a normally very sympathetic protagonist.
CB's sudden competence, and his position in the Fire Kingdom, came out of nowhere. Was there an earlier episode where CB started working for FP? Because the last thing I remember him doing of any significance was freaking out about TOO LIGHT and TOO DARK when Bubblegum took away his nightlight.

Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
CB started working for FP in the episode Earth & Water. It hinted at the idea the fire people can make CB 'fully-baked' rather than just 'half-baked.' Still, his change was super-sudden. The last we saw him was in Apple Wedding, and he still seemed just as incompetent as usual.
Does that mean he'll become overcooked? Will he slowly burn to a crisp?
Also, Princess "I'm totally 18-19 and not 500+ years old" Bubblegum said he was about 30, even though the candy people are kind of immortal. We know Flame Princess is only about 15
This episode was just all kinds of weird. Hopefully 'Betty' will be better without blatant fan service or whatever. You know, assuming it's not a hoax.

Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
I think it might be of interest to note that "Apple Wedding" had some promotional art that sorta explains why Cinnamon Bun was out of the Fire Kingdom in the first place..
Spoiler
I think that CB's declaration of love is a easier pill to swallow if one considers that he's declaring it in a sort of courtly sense, like Finn has done with Bubblegum a few times. He already acted like a bit of a knight in the episode, so it wouldn't be out of the question.

Re: Adventure Time II: Everybody Knows Your Name
I'm not sure the candy people even reproduce sexually, so I don't think CB meant "love" in that sense. I think he has just gotten attached to Flame Princess, nothing more.
About CB competence, I would have liked it better if they had explained it better. I'm OK with his growth on itself, since it parallels FP's own personal growth: They have left Bubblegum and Finn behind...but as I said, I would have liked it better if they had elaborated it a bit more...
Was it so difficult to explain that CB had gotten fully baked while exposed to the heat of the Flame Kingdom?
Or FP had a mage fix the hit he took to the head at the beginning of AT?
Or maybe he just behaves the way his mistress expect/wants him to behave, like a bumbling fool around BP (who, after all created a kingdom of eternal children to be her living toys), as a strong and staunch supporter around Flame Princess (who really needed somebody to put her trust on).
