New Wolves in the Throne room is available online. I'm listening to it now. It's suuuuuuper spacey. And not metal at all.

    Still pretty interesting though.

I think it's also worth a mention, that 'Tallica are actually on the "By Request Tour".

    Interesting tracklists...

Speaking of which, I recently saw Through The Never. It was actually not half-bad. Metallica can still put on a show when they want to.

    Doooood.

Check out Bast, really. Less stonery and more psychedelic, but I think you'll like it.

Edit: also thanks for introducing me to Windhand, never even heard of them before and they rock

I mean, I like Whitechapel's demos and first album, back when they were just a gang of Neanderthals brainlessly chugging away slam/deathcore riffs, but yeah, I couldn't stand this album. Our Endless War? More like Our Endless Bore, mirite gang?

    Nah, I jest. Interesting list!

Normally I don't go for modern death metal
but they're one of a small group of bands (Including Dying Fetus and Suicide Silence) who I would listen too with my 'badass' friends in middle school and thus have a special place in my heart even if objectively it wouldn't seem to be my cup of tea

Since I just returned from Roskilde festival, I'll do a recap of that instead of a top-ten list. The festival actually had a surprising amount of great metal, even though I had initially judged the lineup fairly weak in that respect.

Biggest name was obviously Carcass. Even though neither Death Metal nor Grindcore are usually up my alley, they really managed to impress me, and they will probably make it into my playlist. I suspect Deftones might not be too popular in this thread, but I've had a soft spot for them since my teenage years, and they delivered a fantastic performance, even though their music appeals less to me than it used to. I know Electric Wizard is popular though, and they delivered a crushingly heavy performance with no bull**** except for a weird italian(?) occult movie running on the backdrop.

The main positive surprise came when I noticed the festival had booked three doom metal bands to perform on an intimate indoor scene which is usually reserved for minor electronic acts, avant garde acts and DJ sets. Dark Buddha Rising played a very convincing drone-heavy and slighly psychedelic doom set, whereas Drug Honkey went for a more direct approach which I personally found less appealing. Still good though. I unfortunately missed the last of the three acts, Mournful Congregation which apparently played a very strong Funeral Doom set.

Other major names I missed were Philip H. Anselmo and The Black Dahlia Murder (due to a last minute schedule change). I also missed some Danish metal names which I don't think are known in the international scene yet. Förtress got their shot at fame during the warmup days, while The Psyke Project and Helhorse played a collaborative set during the main festival. I am very curious to what the Playground thinks of the doom acts though.

Oh, and Rob Zombie played a uninteresting set (as expected) while Les Claypools duo of Twang were great fun - though not metal at all.

    Edit: Budha -> Buddha

Yeah, that's pretty sweet. The closest I've come was skipping the queue to a metal-themed bar because of my Bathory t-shirt, heh. Guess the bouncer was a fan.

I was once stopped by a self proclaimed monk on the street (it was a college town) who complimented me on my Iron Maiden shirt, then gave me a copy of the Bhgavad Ghita saying it would help me achieve peace. I think he was just singling out people in band shirts though. I had a friend have the same thing happen to him that same day except that he had some indie rock band shirt on, and a few years later I had a similar experience with another one of the buggers while wearing a shirt for my brother's band, which he couldn't possibly have known about.

So Einherjer is apparently working on some new music. I'm aware that they're not super well known, but since they're one of the quintessential original Viking metal bands, I'm pretty excited.

Had a listen to it. It's pretty decent, yeah. Better than Nostradamus, anyway. Heh. Gotta love Halford's voice, as always.

I personally achieve peace with some crushing doom riffage Although I'm guessing that one's not in the Vedas.

I like Grey Waters, but I actually wasn't too keen on that song. The vocals were kinda whiney.

However, the EP he released under the same project is much more similar to old-school Austere.

The guy named after two US states is the dutch one?

So, I wouldn't call myself a metal fan, but do like some metal. Metal subgenres confuse me too much for me to use them, but I suppose I like more melodic stuff without too much growly vocals or something? But I wasn't too impressed with most of the female vocals bands my brother used to like when I was a teenager like Nightwish and Within Temptation. Any recommendations?

Only metal albums I own is an Apocalyptica CD and a Blind Guardian CD.

    More Kamelot, as Nameless said.

The natural progression from Blind Guardian is always more Blind Guardian

But Kamelot is a good follow up, yeah.

Also, there's Evertale (my current favourite new discovery) if you're into Blind Guardian type stuff at all.

Thanks for the suggestions, most of those were okay. Will probably listen to more of them when I have time to do drawing practice again.
