Nah, the "Y" makes sense. After all, the word "you" obviously has two different sounds in it: "eeee-ooo".

But then, English spelling makes no sense whatsoever and probably never has. Just adopt phonetic spellign already, all the cool languages are doing it!

English spelling actually used to be pretty reasonable. Old English had a few contextual weirdnesses, like how 'g' was pronounced depending on adjacent vowels, but mostly it was pretty consistent. I blame English's current issues on post-William the Bastard introduction of French notions of how spelling and pronunciation should work.

For what its worth, Claire and Marten have always gotten along swimmingly, check some of the earlier strips (around Marten's dad's wedding) and it shows how comfortable they've been with each other since then. Can't recall where did Marten (or we readers for that matter) learnt that Claire was trans though, so I'm not sure if that changed anything in their relationship in any meaningful way.

The way I was taught is that you put a comma pretty much everywhere you'd take a natural pause when saying it out loud, as well as before added clauses like this one.
