Re: V's Gender Debate IV [Official]
Rich does too good a job at keeping you guessing.
In the latest ep, V refuses to help a woman in distress, which most males would do, making us think of V as female. But when Belkar kissed V, V was so appalled and horrified that V took actions to make sure belkar never did that again.
I would almost think of that as a male reaction.
Now, if only we could do a mind exchange with v and elan, then remind elan tht having no clothes makes him invisible, the whole matter could be settled...

Re: V's Gender Debate IV [Official]
V's gender most likely has the word 'male' in it, possibly with a prefix, such as 'fe' or 'she.' It's not like V's gender really affects the comic much, and if it did it would be revealed eventually.

Re: V's Gender Debate IV [Official]
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I've personally always thought of V as male.
Also, make sure that you note this possible typo in Comic #306. The wizards, after spending all day with V helping him write down spells, refer to V as 'he' and 'him.' This occurs considerably after all of the jokes possible have been done to death.
Here's the comic. Check the last panel:

Re: V's Gender Debate IV [Official]
Just like all of us, the characters in the comic are entitled to their own opinions about V's gender, although those opinions are not necessarily correct. The Giant actually answers this question in the FAQ:
Q: Is Vaarsuvius male or female?
A: I will never reveal the truth! Bwahaha! Keep in mind that while certain other characters might refer to V as being male or female, that simply reveals their perception.not the actual reality of the situation.Credits to half-halfling for my adorable avatar.

an intresting point I think is when Roy turned into a female Haley mentions
"it must be Roy's time of the month already"
V doesn't understand what Haley is talking about. This could mean V is a maleSpoilerProud Activist of The Goblinoid Sub-Type

The closest we will get to an answer is if/when we meet V's mate.
And he/she will be just as androgenous, and so we will be no closer to an answer.

Re: V's Gender Debate IV [Official]
The Giant has stated in one of his books that he will introduce us to V's mate eventually, but I'm going to guess the his/her mate is equally ambiguously gendered, causing the rest of the Order to have even more questions.
A handful of true friends, an infinite supply of sodas, a collection of bad movies, and a full supply of webcomics are all one really needs to be happy.

in 'Start of Darkness' there is a lot of elves shown. A hand full look distinctly male, and a small number are definatly female. But most are hard to tell. Do to the fact that they do not have boobs though, the ones that are hard to tell I am asuming are male.

I will always think of V as a female, since she has long hair.

An alternative method of finding V's gender
DISCLAIMER: This thread should not be taken completely seriously. Unless I'm actually right of course, then this disclaimer should not be taken seriously.
I haven't seen this theory in the year or so that I've been reading OotS, although it may have got lost amongst the other V is male/female/therkla etc threads.
V's height and weight are printed on its application form in On the Origins of PCs. They are (Origins info spoilered because I think there's a rule about it):
SpoilerHeight- 151 cm
Weight- 39kg
Translated into imperial, these are:
SpoilerHeight- 59 inches (4ft 11)
Weight- 86 lbs
Using http://www.d20srd.org/srd/description.htm...
If V was male, his base height would be 4ft 5. A roll of 6 would give 4ft11. However, his weight would then have to be 85+6d6 which cannot total 86
If V was female, here base height would also be 4ft 5. However, a roll of 6 would give her a weight of 80+6d6. A roll of 1 would give 86 pounds.
Coincidence? Probably but I like this theory.

Re: An alternative method of finding V's gender
Nice try, but it doesn't work. Belkar is said to weigh 30 pounds, but is 3'2", which should make him 36 pounds by the book. So the characters' height and weight can't be going strictly by the rules.

Re: An alternative method of finding V's gender
This theory... it supports my personal view of V's gender, but I will never use it in a "V gender theory" thread. Why? Simply because, while it is perfectly logical, it's also kind of boring. Congradulations, you just used tables and rules to solve a problem. This makes you a rule lawyer. No, not really, since this is only one instance, but...
I really do like it, honest, but I don't see it standing up to anything. For instance, if the DM in the OOTS world goes by a couple of houserules (very probable), or something. Good thinking, though.But... but... You can't Wake Up Dead

People use the random height and weight generator?
I always assign it based on the character. If I'm building a heavy muscle man, I don't want to roll a one. Thanks Uncle Festy for the wonderful Ashling Avatar

Re: An alternative method of finding V's gender
Well if any of the other characters don't have heights/weights that correspond to the way it should be using random tables, then this theory can get tossed right out. Still, it's one of the more interesting theories I've seen.

Anyone ever roll for height and weight? Those are rather crappy.
Anyway, their postures are listed in OotPC? That's weird.

Re: An alternative method of finding V's gender
I shall stick to my theory that V is male since he's been referred to as "V-man" in strip #9, which is the earliest indication of V's gender anywhere in the comic - and the character wasn't originally conceived as androgynous, so this might have been before V gained that characteristic.
Still, since V's gender will certainly never be revealed, and his/her mate will surely turn out to be equally androgynous, all of our discussions will remain purely academic.
And the argument based on rules could be good, except that (a) The Giant doesn't really play strictly by the rules (b) nowhere in the rules it is stated that a characters weight is constant and not subject to change under any circumstances. Whoopsie, gone redundant here.
In other words, Even if V's height and weight were based on random tables, his minuscule muscle mass, as well as a tendency to neglect nourishment (although he does state elves don't need it too often) would easily make him leaner than average for his race.Thog lift with knees, not back.

My best theory is to look at the form, see the lines outside of the ink blot, if V was male the lines would be different.

Re: An alternative method of finding V's gender
I'm pretty sure a belkaresque theory would be something on the lines of "where the hell are the boobs, anyway?!". And it would, of course, be logically sound to every misogynistic murderous little psychopath out there, wouldn't it?
Especially since all the female characters so far seem to have, well, clearly defined body shape, as far as I remember.
Now you know what I pay attention to in a stick figure comic
EDIT: Make it "misogynistic murderous minuscule mental". Yay for alliteration, however sloppy it may be!Last edited by RyQ_TMC; 2008-09-07 at 10:13 PM.
