    As their enemies, fall away, Bil charges forward against the skinless wolf. Stopping just south of John Smith, allows the summoned spirits of the Mabovoh clan to surge forward against the demon. With a gesture he calls forward his chiming mace; although he can't strike the wolf at the moment, it's coming into position if the creature doesn't flee.

    "I'm rolling thunder and pouring rain, coming at you like a hurricane!" Bil sings out, and a bonerattling peal of bells explodes around the wolf.

    Battle of Savtua Swamps

    John and Doredan's blades cut slashes across the skinless flesh, thick blood issuing from the wounds and staining the ground. Hylusi's magic is shed off by the beast, but Bil's bells cause harm, as do his ancestor's attacks. The wolf shifts to counter the new threat of the harrengon, lashing out at Doredan but finding nothing but air as the Prince dashes away.

    Together, the darkness and the imp swoop toward their final standing foe. One sweeps past the wolf, leaving a hole pierced through its flesh and quivering bands of magic wrapped about it. The other merely spits in the beast's eye before flapping backwards again.

    Blood in the Swamp

    In a hail of blades and magic sounds, the skinless wolf yelps, falls back, and then sinks to it's stomach, unable to continue.

    All is quiet for a few moments, and then the sounds of the swamp slowly begin to filter in. Peeps and cheeps and ribbitz, small birds and singing insects.

    The bodies of the demons transform rapidly into a thick, grey sludge, which begins to dissipate into nothingness rapidly.
    The Bear is Back.

    Cleaning off his blades on the nearby foliage, the noble-looking man keeps one in hand while sheathing the gaudy, hooked dagger. "What horrid creatures. Are they native to this plane, or from somewhere else?" he wonders, not particularly educated on extraplanar matters. It was never really an issue back home... until now.

    "I'm sorry about your companion," he nods his head solemnly towards the other warrior, whose ragged body looks well beyond medical aid, as he addresses the two they'd encountered. An appraising look drags over them, but neither look particularly like pirates. "I am Prince Doredan Reydalise. We are a royal expedition from another plane, here to hunt a crew of planar pirates hiding out in Savtua," he declares, chin raised. "Have either of you encountered more normal brigands or ruffians here?"

    Something like an intake of breath is heard as the darkness winks out, not dispelled but hidden in a magical sack. Ulaam stands revealed, wisps of luminous vapour rising from the slain wolf and into the unmoving opening of her mouth. Green light flares from behind her faceplate as she absorbs the life-energy. Her cloak is the same colour, held in place by a clasp adorned with the image of a dragon. Apart from that, she wears no clothing, leaving bare the wood-and-metal construction of her approximately humanoid body.

    "Well," she says, looking over at Jason's body, "we didn't know him that well. Still, he was nice enough. Thanks for the help, Prince. I'm Ulaam, and this is–"

    "Sesog," proclaims Sesog, fluttering down to curl around Ulaam's shoulders and inclining his head slightly to Doredan. "I am Sesog. Good to meet you, O Prince. Brigands and ruffians, no, not at all. We have been losing more than we have been finding. Jason is gone now, all gone. But before that we lost another–a woman like you, Prince, in likeness and even in name. What was it? Doredana, Doriana... yes, Doriana. Or she lost us–that might be more like it."

    With the death of the wolf, John's heavy breathing seems loud in the abrupt silence, with the mud and muck slowly dripping from his skin and his now battered armor. He looks around briefly, then heads over to the fallen form of Jason, trying to assess whether there was any life remaining in his broken form.

    Disappointed, he shakes his head, tears flowing from his eyes. "This was his last high risk run, as he wanted to spend time with his wife and daughter." Looking into the forest, John falls silent for several seconds as he seeks to bring his emotions back under control, before he turns to Doredan, as he had been the one speaking. "Call me John. It's a great time to meet new friends, despite the" He looks back to Jason's still form, and falls silent once more.

    With a sharp gesture, the giant skeletal hand retreated back into the earth as Hylusi broke the thaumic connection. She took a closer look at the two survivors.

    A human - how the worlds seemed full of the things! - who looked like some hired muscle, mourning the death of his equally uninspiring companion; and somewhat more interesting - some manner of artificial creature.

    <I am the Magus of Bleakpines, Lady Hylusi Quaternaros.> She sent, her mental voice a cold rustle of bones. She examined the rapidly rotting forms of their foes thoughtfully.
    <Unless I miss my guess, those were demons - malignant creatures of disorder and destruction from the Abyss. Unusual to see abroad - at least, back in Viridor - though not unknown. It could be troublesome if they have a portal for ingress.>

    To her companions alone - Bil and Doredan - her sharp tones whispered further, her voice slithering in their skulls.
    <And the machine's pet seems to be an imp, I suspect - a minor form of devil. No doubt serving as a familiar. Tch. Devils are a fool's game; cunning minds, insatiable hunger for power, and long experience.>
    Speaking more generally again, she turned the pinpricks of her gaze upon the warforged and the human.

    Moved by John's tears, Bil kneels over Jason's inert form.
    "Damh teaches us, his faithful, to revel in each moment. Some mistake our enthusiasm for lust, for hedonism, for gluttony. Perhaps it is, for some."
    The harregon pulls forth the bag of diamond dust he had purchased in the markets of Velein.

    "But for me, it is because I know how short my time is. How quickly and completely joy can be snatched away. In a moment, the joy of life can be snatched away from us. All its opportunities. All of its promise.
    But, sometimes, a thing can be made sweeter because it was nearly lost. A stolen ring, recovered. A lost cat, returned. Sometimes, even a life restored, if Damh will grant it."

    "Like me?" the prince regards the strange living doll with some caution once her true shape is revealed from the cloud of darkness. Moreso when the infernal creature's origins are revealed by the Magus. Still... are they any stranger than the Magus herself? Timeborne had been filled with all kinds.

    "I suppose she would be," he ponders cryptically. "If she is alive, I believe she was taken by a tribe of lizardfolk that live on this plane. Natives. I saw them looming over a woman in a... vision of sorts. Decidedly not the friendly sort, by the look of them. If she was with you, then the site of the vision must be near surely..."

    Turning to regard their surroundings, Doredan considers landmarks that may look familiar.

    Hello, Lady Magus. Unfortunately, we... hello? Oh, there's no reply function on this one...

    Realizing her mistake, she switches to verbal communication.

    "Sorry, I thought your telepathy was two-way for a bit there," she explains. "As I was trying to say, we are not natives here. We were traversing an interplanar path when a highwaycreature attacked and threw us into this plane. Our fifth member was separated from us in the fall, and we cannot even find her, never mind settlements or portals."

    Meanwhile, Sesog listens to Doredan.

    "Captured by lizardfolk? Mistress, did you hear that? That's the stone–and our gold!"

    "Yes," says Ulaam, turning back to the two of them. "Not optimal, if that is what happened... you know this tribe, Prince?"

    She pauses to scour tentacle-gore from her blade with a spell, then sheathes it.

    "So... how shall we find them? Are you tracking on your clairvoyance alone?"

    The diamonds, just as Bil was taught, are arranged over the deceased like a shimmering mail. When the divine spark of life is invested into this layer of diamonds, there is a moment of stillness, where nothing happens. Then the loudest crick-CRACK any of you have heard as the grievous neck injury given to Jason by the wolf is undone. Then, almost like layers of sand being washed off by a tide, the worst of his wounds melt away. There is a gasp of air, followed by the once-dead man sitting up and slapping at his neck franticly. After a few moments of doing this, he settled down and looked anxiously over the assembled party.

    "Well ****, I think I died John." He takes some experimental deep breaths. "I'm feeling much better, though!"

    John watches, mesmerized as the cleric of Damh follows a ritual, placing powdered diamond on Jason's still, broken form, and chants. He recoils, momentarily, as Jason's broken neck squelches back into place, and his head straightens as much of the wound is undone. But that didn't matter, Jason was alive. "That damn wolf came out of nowhere, and killed you, and there was nothing we could do about it." He pauses for a moment to wipe something, a tear, perhaps, from his muck and mud coated face. "But with misfortune came fortune, and these strangers arrived just in time to save us." He points to the well dressed human man. "That's Prince Doredan Reydalise, and the delicate dark one is the Lady Hylusi Quaternaros." He pauses, as he looks at the cleric. "I'm afraid that I didn't get your name, and we owe all of you our lives."

    "This plane is small, so the resident sapients must be local. And the lizardfolk likely have hunting trails for food and water," thinking aloud, Doredan approaches the issue of tracking with academic knowledge... but little real idea of how to go about finding these clues that must exist. "I suppose the easiest place to start looking for a trail would be a source of clean water."

    Hand still held to his chin in thought, the prince turns abruptly at the snapping sound, then his tense shoulders slack again when he sees Bil's handiwork. "Ah. You must be Jason, then? We are planar travelers, here on business of our own. As I offered to your companions, I think we can help each other," lowering his arms, he folds them behind his back. "And yes, we do have a means to return to Timeborne. We can take you all with us when we go. Do you happen to know anything about wilderness tracking, Jason?"

    <One way, indeed,> the Magus replied to the construct. <A stop-gap measure I may resolve someday. Though perhaps not - it would be foolish to allow any-and-all to stick their nugatory thoughts within my skull in return.>

    Hylusi stepped up besides the Prince. One dark delicate hand offered him another pill, gleaming a dull red in the half-light of the swamp.

    <To rebolster your defences, Prince.> She considered where acid had speckled him and his clothing.
    <It seems to have done its work almost adequately, at least.>

    A hideous crack indicated the return to life of the dead warrior. The Magus regarded the scene, frowning slightly. What a waste of resources - to bring back some dullard human? And not even get a price for it beforehand? Foolishness. Well, it was done - she would speak with it to the hare later, so they did not show discord in front of the new arrivals. Hopefully this Jason could direct them through the mire more effectively, or at least absorb a few arrows in their place before he returned to his muddy swamp tomb.

    Hylusi couldn't help the slight thrum of irritation in the ease the cleric could bring back the dead to full life - not the animation of undeath or the intricate, extended construction of her own body. If one was willing to kowtow to gods, resurrection was easier -but Hylusi intended to bow her head to none, immortal or no, in the end. She broke from her thoughts to deliver a short interjection in the conversation.
    <If nothing else, the demons should have left a trail, being hardly subtle creatures. They would by nature seek out that which lives to slake their destructive urges.>

    The violent report of resurrection startles Sesog off his perch, squawking in surprise. Managing to right himself in the air, he flaps over to where John stands over their fallen companion.

    "Here after all, Jason Red-breast?" he asks. "Well, welcome back. Second chances! Good for you."

    Ulaam comes up behind John to peer at the revived Jason.

    "Not bad," she says to Bil. "Maybe Doriana will even pay for it. If we find her."

    She tilts her head interestedly at Doredan when he mentions Timeborne.

    "Timeborne? That's where we came from, too. Came from last, anyway. Actually, what exactly is your connection to Doriana? You're both sort of similar, both operate out of the same place, you speak as if you know her somehow, and you have visions of her..."

    Closing his eyes, Doredan utters a small laugh. "She is, according to a mask salesman, my soul sister." The prince shrugs at what he expects are confused looks. "I do not know what it means, and I do not know her. However, the mask I was given allows me to look through the eyes of this person. As of the lizardfolk attack, it went dark. I expect she is either dead or, more optimistically, unconscious."

    John watches more of his wounds simply melt away, his surprised look giving way to a happy smile. Well, cleric, I don't know this god of yours, but if you tell me I'll always whisper a prayer of thanks to the one who saved me... I mean, brought me back." Turning to Doredan, John nods fervently. "I'm no expert, but I know some trail craft, if no one else does. I'm something of a jack of all trades, me. I should be able to find these lizard kin if they reside nearby here. I'll take the lead, but if anything too threatening comes along I'll move to the rear. Don't want to come back to life just to get killed again... His eyes go to the imp and the smile returns. "Most people don't get a second chance, so I intend to use mine wisely."

    Jason moves to take the lead, his hand moving up to rub at his throat like it was sore. He searches the swampy terrain for sign or spore, and after some time of searching he identifies several large drag marks- far too big to be any creature in this misty swamp. At first there is fear of larger demons, but then Jason finds the remains of a lumber harvesting camp, including primitive stone saws and axes, and realizes the drag marks are binds of lumber being dragged through the swamp. Assuming that the lumber would be bound for a settlement, Jason leads on.

    It is hard to see through the heavy, settled fog, but in the grey half-light the group begins to make out lights in the distance. They are fluttering, shimmering beacons in the fog. Approaching closer, the party begins to make out hazy outbuildings, shadows of rough hewn lumber that look to be used to store supplies. Nets and baskets can be seen tumbling out of one with an open door, indicating a culture heavily invested in fishing. The fog begins to clear, and Jason motions for the party to slow down and halt before losing the cover of the mists. Then, from a slimy pool of water ahead, you see the first of the lizard folk of this realm.

    Topping six feet in height, a humanoid form rises from a large pool of standing water ahead of you. Water rolls down murky green scales flecked with tips of ebon black. The swamp is quiet, but as the reptile rises from the swamp a deep, throaty song emits from the creature, the frills on it's back rising as it's notes pierce the night. From deeper into the fog a voice responds, followed by another, followed by an entire chorus of guttural groans that lie in the border between animalistic and soulful. Then the folk rinses a basket through the water, hefting it onto it's shoulder and heading deeper into the swamp, towards the flittering swampfire lanterns of what can barely be made out to be a village. More and more of these lanterns flare into life, and as they do they burn away the fog around them, revealing an entire village of lizard folk. Some are armed with javelins, clubs, stone maces, and other crude weapons, but most have only teeth and claws which they use to tie knots and throw nets into the murk.

    The party is not really on the map yet, but in case things get hostile I wanted to have a battle map ready. The folk appear to be peaceful, but then again for all you know they will eat you if they catch you. How does the party wish to proceed?

    Kneeling with the others on the outskirts of this primitive village, Doredan looks less than pleased to be crouching in the soggy swamp. "Well... they have language," he observes, generously, the bellowing calls of the reptiles. "I certainly do not speak it. If none of us have magic to facilitate communication..." he rubs his chin. "The increasing number of fey in Wissimvale led me to study Sylvan. If they have a druid or shaman, perhaps he too knows this tongue. I could make the attempt."
