As a student of history, I'd just like to point out that it is my considered opinion that not only do people study history while drunk, but a large number of those who made history were drunk as well. We have evidence in many cases, and it would quite easily explain most of the rest of them.

As someone who wants to study history, I very much agree.

It's just that our classes are boring as hell. Whoever decided that we'd make every little thing we did from sixth to eight grade again from ninth to twelfth was pretty... drunk, as well.

For some reason this statement strikes me funny. I can just picture a booth on the side of some road selling the chance to almost run over a woodcock. And there would be a long line of bird lovers lined up and they would try to poke the woodcock as they drove by.

Either cute or freaky-looking, depending on how you look at it. They've been around the past couple of weeks, including flying right past me while walking the dog. ^_^

Entirely true. Part of the reason that WW1 was such a mess was that most of the people fighting it were monged on booze and liquor.

Standing policy in the British Army was that an officer was competent to fight until he became more than a bottle of whisky-a-day man. After that, he had to be rotated back to Blighty to sober up. It usually took about 3 months of being in the front line to drive someone to 2 bottles-a-day and complete alcoholic breakdown.

They also used to issue whiskey to the RFC flyers before every flight. Partially to keep out the cold, partially for Dutch courage, and partially to counteract the diuretic effect of the fumes from the castor oil they used as engine lubricant back then.
