The cold gets a bit warmer. Still no sign of light and no direct source of heat. It's like a hug of warmth had embraced me, if only for just a moment. I stand and continue on, with no real sense of direction or purpose. I could be walking in circles for all I know. Trapped in nothingness, my mind goes over my life in it's entirety; pondering the reasons as to why I would be caught here. In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since coming to this place. "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." Am I being punished, or is it that I'm awaiting judgement, I'm not really certain. At first, the Sapphire Snake didn't notice the man who had been granted visiting time with Vito Genovese. As the men spoke, as though old friends, it slowly dawned on the Don who the free man was. Carlos Gambino, the man in the llama suit, had been forced to lie low after the actual talking llama that had been his cover was run over in a police chase. Apparently, he was making a move.

He could see they were running out of fake conversation material. The guard was watching them, waiting for them to make a false move. The Sapphire Snake looked down at his food tray, which he had recently cleaned out. He already knew the answer, but he hadn't asked yet so it wouldn't be suspicious for him to. "Officer?"

The man of the law approached, eyeing him cautiously. "Yes?"

"I was wondering if we could get seconds, officer." He then glanced at Langsky, who gave him a menacing sneer. Not much of a fighter, but the man knew his ques. "Or, rather, if I could."

The officer laughed a bit before shaking his head. "We don't give special treatment to those who think they have a case. Especially the man suspected of being the Sapphire Snake himself. You'll have to do without until you can clear yourself in court, if you can manage that."

The Sapphire Snake nodded in understanding, giving the officer a quick glance. "Perhaps something healthier for future meals, then? The doctor said I have to mind my heart, which should hold especially true with a bullet embedded near it."

The officer sighed and nodded. He knew that if the suspected Don died before his trail, it would look like the FOP was in the upper reaches of government. He turned back to Carlos, who was just wrapping up his conversation with Vito. "Time's up."

After escorting Carlos out, the Sapphire Snake glanced at Langsky, who flipped him the finger. Third starting at thumb, three lockpicks passed during the chat with the guard. Shaking his head, he signalled when they should break out with a simple sentence. "I'll be glad when I get cleared after my trial. I won't see you lot again."

The streets were finally clean. Well, they still had the usual gunk in the gutters, but the Mafia was cleaned out, and now only the Fraternal Order of Police was left. It shouldn't take too long, Gwyn thought, but things seemed to be taking a turn for the worst. People thought he was a member of FOP!

EK did have a pretty good argument against him. Usually quite active and expressive guy, except now, withdrawn, hiding. Mind you, just about the same things could also apply for Gwyn himself, but that's what you get with a 15 hour job!

*sigh* I'm seriously at a loss to pick who to vote for. No one really stands out, and so I'll have to resort to blind chance. There's a bandwagon going on already. To join it, or not to join it? That is the question. Whether 'tis nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of being wrong, or.... blah. Hamlet isn't helping me either.

Word around the docks was that ED had been picked up by the police for "questioning." Maybe he'd been picked up by some of the good ones, but Cris doubted it. He knew that guy was on the level, but knowing and proving are two very different things.

The whistle blows, shift's over. Time to go home. But first, a stopover at Lucky's. A whiskey sounded real good about now.

A guard soon approached the cell door of the Sapphire Snake. He looked up, and eyebrow raised in concern. The FOP was still out there, decapitated as they were, and they might... no. This was the guard from earlier. "Yes?"

"We figured you might want to know that you're in the running for mayor. I guess folks must think you're innocent."

The Sapphire Snake smiled. It was too good to be true. "It makes sense. I'm the dock manager, and I made a point of maintaining a sense of stability within the community as I could manage it. I have experience for the job, and plenty of motive to eliminate corruption in law enforcement."

"Corruption in law enforcement?"

"Armed police officers busting down my office door without a warrant, the late Kingslayer's presence still influencing the law enforcement... It's no wonder I was arrested."

The officer blinked in slow realization, putting the pieces together. "No warrant?

"No warrant, no warning, I was lucky they excercised restraint." Yes, look into it. The Sapphire Snake would be out without a trail, if this works.

The officer nodded, turning and making his way out. "...I'll look into this. Should I let the public know you're running?"

"On a campaign of eliminating corruption." Oh, how sweet the lies were when they were the truth.

I feel a rush of cold run through me like ice. This place, this area I'm stuck in, continues to freeze me to the core. Maybe that's it, maybe I'm just frozen to the core. Or maybe the wanderings of a lost soul is just cold.

Another day, another night. The jockeying for power never ceased, but new wrinkles were introduced. The carrot of public office with the iron billyclub behind it was stretched out into the fog, to lure those who thought themselves important, to draw them up and out of the sea of insignificant faces. Enough mosquitoes had bitten at the feet of giants perhaps to provoke a response.

Trying to find the dame was proving pointless. Might be easier to get her to come to me, but I'd need leverage for that. With the mafia gone to ground, things were marginally safer, in that they were dangerous in a more predictable fashion.

Ladies and gentlemen please...

Myself and my cane hobbed through the market district, pausing long enough here and there to peer at a vendor's selection of fine authentic crap to blend in properly; occasionally getting into a semi-senile argument about pricing and the good old days to give it weight.

Mayor. Sure it was an empty circle, but it might give me just enough pull to arrainge a meeting with the dame to discuss civic policy and ... reform legislation.

Downtown next. I spoke to a few of the street vendors to gauge the barometer of public opinion in wake of the recent events. There was, oddly, some support for Ganurath, the arrested Mafioso, for Mayor. My lower lip tightened, though the news was little less than could be expected.

Your eyes will not be believing...

Public office. It wasn't my usual style, would attract a lot of attention, but then I'd been weathering too much attention since the start of this mess; at this point a little more would make little to no difference.

What I will now be revealing...

I worked down the three steps that led to the slightly sunken door to Lucky's and let myself in. With a round of drinks for all in attendance and a few discreet words to Lucky to arrainge the fix, I announced my candidacy for Mayor to the crowd of lowlifes, scum, peddlers and career alcoholics ... or as I now considered them "my constituency".

Ladies and Gentlemen...

Gwyn tossed and turned in his bed. His pillow would feel like air one second, and rock the next. This spot to cold, this one too hot. He would not sleep, he knew, for if he did sleep, he would dream, and if he dreamt, he would die. He could feel it in his bones. It made no sense, and yet he was certain. And so he would toss, and turn, wondering what harm came to the Eldritch Knight, what happened to that poor benighted soul...

And he was standing on the edge of a cliff with no bottom, disappearing into the blackness, the sky as dark as the night sky in the city, the horizon faded and grey. Shadowy figures called his name, beckoning him to take but a single step forwards, tugging with incorporeal hands at his clothing. Gwyn whirled around, his dreamsense sensing the figures behind him, a silent mob appeared, staring with empty eyes at the tall lone, ragged figure that was Gwyn. Gwyn's eyes were drawn forward again, against his will, except instead of the shadowy figures, and equally shadowy pit, there was a skull, and it spoke.

"I've been expecting you."

Gwyn woke up again, sweating. He knew it now. He was dead. He knew why. He knew how. However, he also knew how to avert it. Noone would attack the mayor, right?

The polling booths close at midnight. The ballots are collected by officers appointed by the court, and delivered to the courthouse – under guard – to be counted.

However, the city cannot have an election without violence.

A thug asks a passer by, in a loud voice “Who are you votin’ for?”

“None of your business!”

“You know, if you vote the right way we can all pull this together.”

“Ah – I hope not. That’s the way of tyranny. The only way to make progress is when we all pull in different directions.”

The thug pulls a pistol, and points it at the independent voter “I got six bullets that says you’ll vote my way, or no way.”
“I’d rather die now, than live knowing I continued to keep things worse.”

BLAM!

BLAM BLAM BLAM!

The thug looked at all the passerby on the street “Now who are YOU all votin’ for?! Think before you pull that switch!”

He yelled. He collapsed to the ground. It seemed like he had been walking for days and days. Each time hunger and thirst made him lose consciousness, each time the sweet release of death beckoned he came back. Today was no different.

Are you ready?

He groaned. Why don't you leave me alone? What did I ever do.

You died.

Nausea

What? What do you mean I died. I didn’t… I couldn’t…

You’re so funny. I can’t believe it took you this long to figure out.

Clutching at his blood streaked face he collapsed in terror. Slowly the voice began to change. Now instead of a child’s voice it began to sound darker and more hate filled.

You’re all mine now. So you better get used to this. You’re going to be here for a long time.

No. He whimpered trying to escape the voice. No I’m not dead You’re lying.
Ha-ha you don’t remember. Here let me show you.

Suddenly an intense pain split his skull as the world was ripped away and replaced with a more urban scene

He watched as he walked the street. His other self kept making nervous glances over his shoulder.
It all came rushing back to him. He wanted to reach out and warn himself of what would happen. But he knew it would be too late.

He watched himself enter the election meeting. It was like watching a train wreck. He watched himself stand up for his vote even though it was widely known that it was dangerous to vote against the mafia. He watched the ensuing argument. He watched the gun fire.

He watched himself die.


He heard that voice laughing as his world turned black. He cried in genuine terror as he begged for mercy. But there would be none.
