Re: LGBTAitP 26: No Time For Snappy Titles
Thank you all you lovely Men, Women, and Smizmars.
I do feel better by now, but I was pretty shaky for the first few hours of work today. Once I started working and getting along with my day, it got much better. But there for a bit, esp in the wee early hours this morning, it was bad.
But a little bit of rainbow from here always helpsMy Extended Signature, Check it out!

Re: LGBTAitP 26: No Time For Snappy Titles
We're all in this together. We may all be different (and online), but that doesn't mean we don't all care about each other any less, or any differently (maybe), than we do for for our loved ones IRL.

An Internet friendship is every bit as valuable as one in meatspace - we're still people, after all. ^_^
... Unless you're all really really advanced bots. Wait, no, even then you'd have to be pretty sentient so it would still count.

Fun Fact: When they were doing the Turing Test for Cleverbot, only 63% of the humans were found to be human.

*lots of hugs for Celtic*
So, I just got back from that LGBT group thing. It was a bit smaller than I expected, but I got the sense that it was one of their slower nights. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that there was quite a large transgender/genderqueer demographic (about 1/3 of the people there, which was much more than I was expecting). Anyways, aside from the initial awkwardness of the first five minutes, it was nice. I think I may try to go on at least a semi-regular basis.

Re: LGBTAitP 26: No Time For Snappy Titles
Sentient beings... Might not be the best judges of sentience. I mean, given how dramatically humans vary, a system designed to produce a 'generic' response would probably sound more "normal" more often than not (especially if the arbitrator expects a "tell" of some sort, like being really good at math or something).
... Besides, bio-privilege. We seem to expect everything comparable to us to look/sound/act like us, if science fiction and most folklore are any indication.
... Also, imposed dichotomy - Player C knows that one is a human and one is a computer. A better test might involve a chat setup of some sort, with an unknown proportion of computers mixed into a group of strangers (all of whom vote independently).

Re: LGBTAitP 26: No Time For Snappy Titles
Belated Hugs for Celtic D&Der. I heard that lucid dreaming (which is pretty awesome on it's own) helps reduce/prevent nightmares, so you might want to look into that.
Well, it looks like school is starting again soon ( ) and I'm one of the three heads of the GSA. Does anyone have any suggestions for what to talk about during meetings and for what activities/events we could do around the school, and for what we could do to raise money? We'd especially like advice on how to bring in new members, since more than half of our committed membership graduated last year.
We have our own ideas, of course, but it would be nice to see what the Internet community thinks as well.
(If it helps, we're a high school around the suburbs of Toronto, Canada).

Hope you feel better, CDD. Dreams like that are terrible.
I ha a dream I was Deiving to Lix Lorn's for a sleep over, but it morphed into a zombie scenario o_O
That sounds really cool! I'll have to look around a bit over here. I'm like an hour from San Francisco, there's got to be something
There is actually some amount of evidence that bipedal structure causes the evolutionary chain which leads to sentience. Walking upright changes your nervous and muscular systems, leading to vascular changes to support a different brain anatomy, leadin to better mental output, leading to tools, etc. aliens with funny foreheads could occur of only because of all the possible permutations of the equation, only a few lea to sentience and those few all include bipedal structure.

Re: LGBTAitP 26: No Time For Snappy Titles
Try to find a date when you have a social phobia (which is getting worse) and extreme anxiety+depression.. It sucks D:
SpoilerThough it's odd.. I've been without a boyfriend for oh, about two months or so now, but for once in my life.. I've been okay with it. Before I've always -craved- love, because of my PTSD (not feeling loved by parents/family, only a boyfriend 'fills the hole' [no pun intended]). But I've been so absorbed in gaming, building a 'new life' (well, it feels like it) for myself in WoW (and now Guild Wars 2) that is so much better than my real life. I've got a good guild, with loads of nice caring people in it who also want what I want to happen in it, I've got a few max-level characters and well.. It makes me feel accomplished. It makes me feel like living is actually worth-while, strange as it sounds.. Some people say it's good, others say it's bad. I think it's personally good, because it's stopped my life-long goal of finding 'the one', and being so depressed all the time that I haven't. I'm just kind of wondering what other people think of it? :/

Re: LGBTAitP 26: No Time For Snappy Titles
You're very useful, and your name is phenomenal. It really sells your role. Or matches your personality, whichever is more flattering. I think I'm confusing myself >_>
I think it's complex.
On the one hand, I know that small things like that really boost your joi de vivre or however that's spelled. On the other, I would be worried about you maybe living for the game and the game alone. It requires balance; I know I'd be a depressed, miserable and violent misanthrope without the playground here. So who am I to say, that having friends online and not off is bad?
I think you are aware of the potential problems. This makes me... Feel better about what you describe. You're an adult, or close enough to make your own decisions, right? I trust you to not go overboard. Or, failing that, I trust you to have made a choice to go overboard rather than just letting it happen. Just be careful. This sort of thing can provide a good foundation - love, respect, and social acceptance amongst other things - for a happy life, but is incomplete and not a happy life in and of itself. There is a lot of information we just don't have and can't get. So a quick "it's good" or "it's bad" won't work I'm afraid.
If you're willing to keep folks posted immsure they would be willing to keep you up to date on their feelings and such though
Ach, my spelling!
Yeah, it was strange. Turning it into a zombie dream was a defense mechanism. Some creepy dude in the backseat kept saying he was going to tell my girlfriend I was visiting Lix alone and "with intentions", even though said girlfriend was meeting me there, and my brain couldn't handle it.
Geeze, what does it say I'm better able to emotionally handle the walking dead than my girlfriend misunderstanding stuff? <_<;

Re: LGBTAitP 26: No Time For Snappy Titles
*Far too late hugs*
That is a very terrifying nightmare to have, I hope it will not reappear.
You are plenty useful all the time, both here and likely also outside of here. ^_^
*Hugs/cookies*
Phobias and social anxieties are very sad, I hope it will stop getting worse very soon. Glad that you have found a place where you feel home. ^_^
In regards to games and building a new life in them: I personally see no reason why online friends would be any less worth than meatspace friends. Building a life and purpose through games and the Internet have provided a way to be social for many who would otherwise be utterly alone, now finding friendship outside of the situations that seem overwhelming or crippling. Certainly have been much happier from it myself. :3
There is a certain risk of neglecting reality, health and safety, but building a community through gaming is not the cause of that. Depression itself is usually why some loses themselves, and has happened through many things other than games. As long as you never use it to escape the problems that are causing PTSD and growing phobias, then your goals and friendships online are a great thing.Treasured Quotes

@Celtic_D&Der: Oh dear, I had the same nightmare last month. ._. *hugs*
Seconding that. During most of my adolescence, my only real friends were online. My best friend and I definitely contributed to help each other stay sane. Okay, insane. A healthier kind of insane than the one we started up with. Then Best Friend became BoyFriend and blahblahblah happy ending.Originally Posted by on Dwarf Fortress succession gamesOriginally Posted by Dwarf Fortress 0.40.01 bugs

I consider this thread like a home on the internet. A home I get to share, unlike my gmail account which is a very private house. This thread is more like a favourite pub, where I know all the regulars and new people might stop by any time!
