...., Camera, Action!
Malack's Protection from Daylight comment got me thinking: How are the hallways in that pyramid lighted? There are no torches anywhere. Torches would make little sense anyway, since the Draketooths have been dead for ages.
Durkon has Darkvision, but from earlier strips we know that that gets a specific animation in the comic when he switches it on. All the other party members don't seem to have trouble seeing things. The shadows seem to be cast from a light source above the hallways. But unless some of those hallways are much higher than the ceiling was drawn, I doubt it's from really high torches either. I hope that this isn't just a "plot-powered" light source.
So, maybe there's a source of reflected/refracted sunlight in each hallway, which lights things from above. I don't want to be nitpicky here, but it may be relevant in the future. Malack may have a spell that protects him from the damage by sunlight, but does he still get any penalties to his abilities? What if his protection spell were to be dispelled?

Vampires don't suffer any penalties in sunlight, other than the fact that it kills them, so Malack's protection spell should have him covered. He could be in trouble if it gets dispelled, yeah, but I would assume he keeps a spare one prepared for just such an eventuality.

Re: ...., Camera, Action!
It is a plot-powered light source.
While I have certainly tried recently to expand the visual vocabulary of the comic with some shadows, the art style ultimately does not include lighting and shading (in the same way that it does not include noses or thumbs). Things are generally well-lit until there's a story/joke reason for them to not be, because it would be a pain in the ass to have to draw Haley holding a lantern all the time.Rich Burlew

Why would you have Haley do it, she needs her hands free to fire arrows. Just have élan do it, he can just play his kazoo!

Re: ...., Camera, Action!
Continual Flame is a low-level spell, that the *Entire Draketooth clan* had access to. Given that it's a human-built and operated dungeon, and that their *Primary* method of defense was illusions, it makes sense they'd want to illuminate the place. Both so they could see, and so enemies could see their illusions.
So this one, though it is caused by plot, at least makes a good deal of sense."You want to see how a Human dies? at ramming speed."

Re: ...., Camera, Action!
OK, my mistake. I was reading up on a link on Vampire Lord somebody posted, and it mentioned that they can walk in daylight freely, but get a -4 penalty to lots of things. But it's clear that Malack is not a Vampire Lord, because of his pale skin (unless he was albino at peak health).
Too bad that the lighting is plot-powered, but I wouldn't have noticed anything if the word daylight hadn't been in the latest strip anyway. It's a minor detail. It's probably true that the increased detail of the strips will create higher expectations, and my comment is no exception.

Re: ...., Camera, Action!
It seems hard to believe that an epic level spellcaster like Girard would be unable to research a spell that would duplicate candlelight.

Re: ...., Camera, Action!
Yeah, I remember that strip, somewhere around the Grubwiggler part. But Roy's skin is very dark, so the comparison is unfair. A dark skinned corpse shows very little skincolour change, because most of the colour is caused by pigmentation. A light-skinned corpse can have a much paler complexion than when it was alive, because a lot of the 'pinkness' is coloration from blood. Once a person of any colour dies, all the blood from tiny veins under the skin will recede.

Re: ...., Camera, Action!
As a rogue player myself, I feel totally weirded out at the idea of Haley holding a lantern. How do you expect to hide effectively while holding any form of light source ?
Makes me remember of several debate around my table as to "who holds the torch ?" beetween the stealthy who wants to keep stealthy, those who use 2h weapons, those who have dark/night vision and don't need them, etc... usually end with "mage's light !"
More seriously, I don't have any issue myself with the plot-lighted, I kind of consider so far that there was light's sources "out of screen", like the restoration's spell and stuff.

Re: ...., Camera, Action!
In Ghostwalk, Monstrous Vampires sometimes undergo colour changes- very dark or very pale, red eyes.
This may be applicable to normal vampires as well.Marut-2 Avatar by Serpentine
