At 2500 points, it could work.
Especially if you are IG, who are not alien at all to the 30k setting.
Whoever, point that 30k marines are NOT 40k marines. there will be rules to be learned in order to have a proper game.

Luckily, you know is legion, so it cuts down on your learning needs, as you can just focus specifically on them.

    So, what to expect?

Units are mostly all-or-nothing. Dev squads all got the same gun (sargent included, all ten members too), tactical squads are all bolters, etc. some units (like veterans) break the mold, but your basic marines do that. units tend to be bigger. 20 man tactical squads are a thing,
The 30k unit rooster is also far, FAR bigger. many 30k units got no 40k comparison, or a single unit got split into several. and to top it off, some are highly custom-able. you really can't predict what they'll have.

There is no ATSKNF. moral is an actual concern in 30k.

Army construction is mostly a CAD base, thee are no formations. if you got a Lord of the Legion characther (everyone should have in such size), you can choose something called "rite of war" that gives you some FOC shuffling (usually turns something into troop), some army-wide special rules, and some sort of downside.

In 30k, only troops and units with the "Implacable advance" USR actually score.

As for imperial fists-thier devs get Tank Hunters, and all bolters army-wide(not variants like pistols and heavies though) get +1BS, in addition they are not allowed to choose to fail a moral check, have to issue a challenge (and get to reroll 1s to hit in it), and as long they are in cover they are immune to pinning.
As for their downside, the opponent (as in, the dude not playing them) can choose to not have random game length and instead force the game to be 6 turns. very useful if you go second in an eternal war mission. the sheer knowledge of when the game ends is powerful.
Their special gear and units are nothing that will be too alien as a 40k player. much of it just unlocks things that come stock in 40k, or gives a variant. nothing is overly unique.
Dorn is rather cheap of a LoW though, so you might have to deal with him. with gulliman and magnus showing up in 40k already though-a primarch isn't all that out there any more.

In general expect an army with a lot of storm shields, combat shields, boarding shields and watnot. fortifications are likely.
Or something completely different. a different Rite of War is almost a different army. same unit lists, but different allowances and restrictions means you get totally different setups.

What NOT to expect-drop pod spam is not a think in 30k outside of spesific rites. gladius isn't a thing (some rites play similarly, but the whole MSU concept is not 30k, unless you are thousand sons or some other legion that spesifically benefits from it)

So overall, you need to build your army as if you are facing something between 40k codex marines, and legion based CSM

I basically have to give this guy a game, since I want to encourage people to show up and sending him home on a 90 minute round trip with no game is not going to encourage him or the rest of his club to show up in the future. So, having never even looked at the 30k rules before, can I just chuck 2500 points of 40k Imperial Guard into a game of it and expect it to function, or are the games not that compatible?
Sort of. Depends on how he's built his list and if you play 30k missions with 30k scoring since in 30k only certain things are scoring (basically infantry only and dedicated transports like rhinos don't get that transfered over) while everything else is denial only and some of the 30k mission are rather different from the standard eternal war, with at least 1 that springs to mind leaving only a 12" gap between deployment zones.

All the usual caveats apply to list construction. If you take nothing but basiliks and he's infantry heavy, it's going to be a forgone conclusion. Ironically, one of the staples in a 30k list (armoured ceramite spartan) will struggle a bit against a vanquisher simply because armourbane isn't melta and stranding ~800 points of 6" move deathstar a million miles from their target is usually a decider.

Worst comes to worst, ask your IW player to loan you his toys and hash out a list from that?

Again, some metas are surprisingly forgiving when you don't try to break the game.

T8, 2+, 14 Wounds. Monstrous weaponry. Power Level 16. Expect points to be super high, but dang this thing makes current-era vehicles look like they're made out of tissue paper. I wonder if Chaos will get a drop pod that can fit this thing... I sure hope not because holy crap.

I was guessing so as well. This seems over the top, but it's also the largest Grav weapon I believe (or one of them, anyway). Hard to estimate what a Gravgun will look like, but I would imagine something similar - massive AP, more shots against blobby units but more damage against larger units.

Yeah.. i dam well hope that Grav changes a lot, so its no longer the silver bullet that kills everything. Its not like it needs to, with these rules it dont seems like Wraithlords will run rampant any longer.

Probably not given that the old grav-flux bombard was FW grav meaning it was a strength test to wound (though it was on 2d6), then an armour save, but they also had haywire and left dangerous terrain, so they were the hotness for anti vehicle, especially in a meta that was full of armoured ceramite which made melta useless. Still, maybe GW told them to fix their crap so there isn't 2 versions of grav, who knows? Making grav not totally faceroll infantry when it was intended to counter MC's would be nice though and it's something that's been asked for and proposed many times, usually by making the to-wound roll based on bulkiness, but bulky/v.buly/extremely bulky probably don't exist anymore.

That could also be a function of the fact that it's a "Grav-flux Bombard". Whereas an actual grav gun would get the same shots no matter the unit size. Since it doesn't matter if you're shooting at one Ork or 20, you're still only hitting 1 Ork per shot. Whereas this seems to function more like a multiple blast/barrage or something.

Games Workshop announce Warhammer Fantasy Role Play 4th Edition, being developed by UK-based company Cubicle 7 Entertainment.

....Which is slightly odd, since Cubicle 7's most recent project is ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG, a fully admitted WFRP "love letter" (read: copyright-avoiding clone) so one wonders just how much of their own market they're going to be cannibalising..... But something to look forward to, none the less.

....Which is slightly odd, since Cubicle 7's most recent project is ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG, a fully admitted WFRP "love letter" (read: copyright-avoiding clone) so one wonders just how much of their own market they're going to be cannibalising.....
