Re: LGBTAitp 27: Of Shoes, and Ships, and Sealing Wax
In retrospect, yeah, it's just the mixture of misogyny and transphobia directly, and as such, transmen wouldn't really experience it in the same way or at all depending upon the people.
Remember, to misogynists, wanting to be female and "giving up being male" is worse than "a woman wanting to be a man" because of the hierarchy of value that misogyny is predicated upon.
Well, that's a good way for the blogger to be dismissed as intellectually bankrupt and written off as irrelevant and bigoted, I suppose?
I'd be more concerned if people outside of their own hateful little following of people so hurt by hate they became it took the person as worthwhile enough to overlook that.
Spoiler
Yep. From the context and the content of the flyer, it's just plain bizarre to boot.
Honestly, I figured that it must be a vastly different school system than any of the ones in the U.S. I've encountered to have a 12th grade gym class, and so my own experiences of what grades people take gym wouldn't apply, because in all the states I've lived in, you're required to take it as as an underclassman.

Yarr, I get the whole intention of "this thing is about queer people" but making ridiculous generalizations just makes you a huge ass. :/
Oooh, good luck! How old is 12th grade? What are you going to be talking about specifically? /interested
...ugh, that is outright vile.
It's the specific intersection between transphobia and misogyny. It comes down to, basically there's two forms of sexism. There's oppositional sexism; which is the one that is all "act like your assigned gender, stay in your box" and where a decent amount of transphobia comes from. Then there's the traditional form of sexism that states that 'maleness' is better than 'femaleness' (this does not mean that men don't suffer from the restrictiveness of gender roles and stereotypes). So, while someone transmasculine is 'breaking the roles' cause they're doing something they shouldn't cause of their assigned gender, they are moving to a 'better position' cause male is 'better' than female. So it at least 'makes sense'. But for transfeminine people it's the whole "why would a 'man' degrade themselves by wanting to be a woman?'. And that adds in a whole extra ton of bigotry.
Natalie wrote a good article about it.

Re: LGBTAitp 27: Of Shoes, and Ships, and Sealing Wax
Oh shi... Oh wait, it only counts for "allies"(imagine a really heavy echoing voice here). Luckily I consider people who support people in general (LGBT are people too right?) as people deserving being called a decent human being. We're in the clear fellow non harassing straight people...
But seriously now, I think intolerance of any sort is generally bad (unless it qualifies as an allergy, in which case I pity you and hope you have the right meds when it happens). I sometimes wonder how hard it can be to just accept other people for who they are and what they believe in (or not) (barring extreme circumstances ofcourse where people would try to legalize breaking several major laws by using the freedom of speech/thought and religion (and such)). For being a decent human being has nothing to do with intelligence or other personal factors, just the thing we humans have been doing for ages, i.e. a little bit of empathy. Is that too much to ask? Well, apparently it is for some people...

Science is neutral. Scientists, and interpretation, are not. Ideally you have scientists from a vast array of backgrounds, perspectives and, yes, financial backing critiquing each others work from those biases (but should be attempting to mitigate or account for said biases) to make sure the ultimate consensus is as neutral an interpretation of the evidence as possible.

Re: LGBTAitp 27: Of Shoes, and Ships, and Sealing Wax
That's really great. You are the change you want to see in the world! My mother lectures at third level and she says the best way is to come across as really frigging scary the first day, then be nice. That way they don't want to aggravate you in case you flip out on them.
That really sucks. As someone who used to identify as a straight ally, it makes me feel hurt, and as a member of the LGBT+ community, it makes me feel angry. We're never going to "win" with that attitude! We're never going to be the majority (unless that "most people are a bit bi" thing catches on, I guess). We gotta get the reasonable straight people on side so the bigots are in the minority.
It is very human to want to lash out in return. But that's no real excuse for actually doing it to people who are on your side.
I saw that. I'm not even properly able to get angry about it, I just feel kind of sick and scared. I want to say "The worst part is ... !" but I can't figure out which bit is the worst part, so I'll just say apparently the school authorities are taking it as an isolated incident, even though there have been plenty of sexual assaults on campus.
I'm having a really hard time at the moment. I'm still in limbo, I don't know if/when I can start my Masters, I have no apartment, no therapist, I'm in medical-expenses limbo. I'm so stressed I'm getting near-constant stomach pains, and I've been having terrible thoughts. I'm going to need a holiday to recover from all of this not-working! >,<

Not an unknown phenomena. Rather depressing. It's the same sort of opinion a percentage of [oppressed minors] have to those who aren't a part of that group who want to learn and help.
In happier news: A bus has been driving around Leicester recently, with an advert that isn't advertising a film (shock. Horror). This one is just a pink banner with the words "Some people are gay. Get over it."

Wow. Just, wow. It's almost as if people want to wallow in self pity becuase of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
I'll admit pride and conceitedness can happen, but with a few well placed remarks and relevant discussion that can be helped. Just plain rejecting people who at least try to help or at least try to find out what it is all about and simultaneously crying foul is just crying for attention imo. Re: LGBTAitp 27: Of Shoes, and Ships, and Sealing Wax
Meh. I'd like to think that I would still hold my anti-bigot views even if there was nothing coming back to me from the LGBTA community*. As it is, I just repeat the old "5% of any group are jerks" saying and pass on. They don't want me on their site, I don't want to be on their site and so I think we can easily find some common ground...
But it's nice to be appreciated.

it isn't about nothing coming back (I mean, that warm and fuzzy feeling becuase you helped someone is reward enough), it's about people crying out for pity, understanding and acceptance while they just file you away as a LGBT hating, self obsessed, bigoted, mysogynist ******* anyway, whatever you do or say. *wanders off mumbling incoherent sounds, waving franticly*

Re: LGBTAitp 27: Of Shoes, and Ships, and Sealing Wax
Re: Miami University. 27 rapes over a three year period. That's nine a year, in a school with 16,000 students. Doing some lazy math, that's one per eight thousand girls. At some point, you realize that you're never going to wipe out violent crime completely, and that all you're doing is wasting resources while causing outrage fatigue to set in.
My bigger worry is that the focus on what's the taste equivalent of a dead baby joke will distract from decent partner etiquette. There are plenty of ways to be a ****ty partner without violently assaulting anybody else. Some branching out could help instead of trying to fit as many things as possible under the rape umbrella.
How do you feel about abused animals? Starving children? Underfunded space programs?
The point being, there are plenty of worthwhile causes that won't try to berate and guilt-trip you just for not living up to their unrealistic expectations? Nobody gave any ****y bloggers the right to grant or revoke your status as a decent human being. Stop paying attention to their tantrums, focus your energies on other worthwhile causes, be happier not having to aggravate yourself regularly.

I'd really like it if there were no doctors, who lack an empathetic attitude and trivialize instead of understand gender issues, treating transsexual people.
I don't feel like being categorized separetely and cast aside from what my gynecologist calls 'women', obviously not referring to me. Nor do I feel like being the target of assumptions that my female health needs and my desire for motherhood are somehow less valid than other women's.
It's painful for my ears to listen to them talk about chromosomes and biological sexes, only to undermine my identity and prospects for wishes associated with a female life, when they really don't even know a whole lot about what chromosomes and biological sex keep within themselves.Last edited by AuroraF; 2012-10-16 at 06:02 AM.

Re: LGBTAitp 27: Of Shoes, and Ships, and Sealing Wax
That's no good. I hate to say it, but when you're deciding on a time and place to come out to them fully, maybe it would be a good idea to find a friend or family member who might be willing to let you stay at their place, so if the worst should happen, at least you have a place to stay.
I really, really hope it doesn't come to that, but if that was their reaction to the idea, taking some precautions might be for the best. They're your parents, though. Only you can know if that's a likely outcome.
*Hugs!*
Hooray! *Throws rice*
Thanks !
Hooray for you, too! I remember that feeling. I miss it, but I glad you get to experience it!
Ah, I see. Thanks . More werewolfery to come today, I promise!
OMG !! That is just absolutely adorable! How to make a background out of...
Oh, good luck! Hopefully there the reasonable, understanding kind of high schoolers, not the stereotypical idiotic, bigoted jocks. I really hope you do well - someone needs to help spread understanding and acceptance, and you're doing a really great thing!
That's... Not the right way to go about it at all. Don't they understand? We're all of us a representative of our group. If one of us is mean or hurtful for no reason, then those who encounter them are going to think that's how we all react.
Especially when they're trying to help!
... ... I don't understand people at all. Am I even the same species as some of these clowns? Who...WHO in their right minds could think something like that is okay?
I liked that article. I like most of her stuff, actually, although I only ever read it when I get linked from here.
In other news, I've been getting a really weird (not unpleasant, just weird) feeling lately. It's like I'm a old photograph that's been double-exposed, and one of the images is my surrent male body, and the other is a potential, to-be female body. It crops up every now and then for a few moments. I'm always surprised, but excited to feel it come, and sad to see it go.
Anyone else ever get anything like that? I'm curious.

I feel sorry for anyone who have experienced so many negative interactions that they cannot imagine not being in an Us vs. Them situation, it is very sad. ;_;
I really hope more decent people from all groups will be able to break through the mists of hatred soon. That people can and will be this vicious towards people for sharing traits with oppressors is terrible.
Eep!
Please do not destroy us! We-uhm, wait. I am a Kobold...
But please do not destroy humans anyway! >_<

I hope you will soon get to start your Masters, that all sounds very very stressful. Hopefully it will be much less stressing once you begin.
That is terrible. It is not the job of a physician to determine who you are or to impose their values on you. Doctors are supposed to help people and care for their well being, not trying to make them fit in someone else's boxes, particularly not their own. ;_;
I hope much fewer doctors will act like that soon.Treasured Quotes

Speak for yourself. While I actually happen to like this non-klepto one, the vast majority and their "borrowing" fetish are pretty much the reason Fireballs were invented.
Bolded for emphasis. While there are some structural/chemical issues that need to be kept in mind, they have absolutely nothing to do with bedside manner.
I guess it's a question of how trans acceptance progresses in the future. Many doctors did grow up and get trained when trans people were curiosities at best. This isn't an excuse for bad behavior, just hoping that the issue doesn't get brushed aside over the next few years. Otherwise, you'll have more doctors doing the same thing because it was never relevant to them.

Danke.
Eeeech... should not have clicked that while having a snack. >.>
That's neat.
I'd hope that people's support of me is not dependent on the behaviour of other queer people.

It's really frustrating just how uneducated the medical sector (still) is about trans stuff. And it's not even like it's that hard. :/
*nod*
I'm planning on coming out to other people in the family first to have some support and people to fallback on.

Uhm, I usually get something similar when looking in the mirror? It's like, seeing the girl in me and it doesn't go away and it makes me really happy when it happens.
Aww.

Thank you. They found what is probably a benign tumor on my cat's left front paw. Luckily it's dry and doesn't appear to hurt (he bit me when I examined it, but not in a way to suggest pain). You all know how much my cat means to me - I've talked enough about him over my time here. But like I said, it's probably nothing.

I don't think the school's doing anything more than responding to (what I can only imagine is) a breach in the student code of conduct. It seems over the top to suggest that because of that more serious problems will be over looked.
First of all, yes, **** those people. Second of all, no, **** those people. They don't get to decide the decorum of their movement just because they have a free Tumblr account and a loud voice. We can ignore them without giving up on the cause of LGBT rights.... I came to appreciate that mountains make poor receptacles for dreams.
