Default The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (#0081 - #0090)

Welcome to The Stick Awards II: Second Edition!

The Stick Awards are handed out to the best strips of all time as chosen by our fellow Playgrounders.

This week we are covering the comic strips 81 through 90.

For full details about the Stick Awards, please check out the main thread here.

To read more about the original Stick Awards, created by Nazzo, the 102nd, please read his thread here.

To vote in this thread, simply state which comic of the ten listed is your favorite. Bolding the number of the comic (Like this) helps it stand out.

Voting for this week will close on July 20th, 4pm EDT. Any votes made after that will NOT count toward the totals.

Last week, 80 Replacement Cleric ascended to the heavens at the expense of Team Cleric. Who will it be this time? Only you can decide that.

So let us sit down and swap tales of our favorite comics. And in doing so, we might just determine the winner of....

I've got to go with number 84 this time around. Durkon's first real character development, I feel.

Hmm, Banjo gaining followers? Vaarsuvius being half-camel? ( "I think I can see the hump!") The invisibility comics? ELAN GETTING A 4?! I think I will have to choose for Belkar realising the power to inflict bodily harm was always his in 85.

Quite absurd: I think this is by far the strongest bunch of comics so far. (The weakest I think are 86/87). There some really awesome gags there (I got a 4!; Banjulhu is awesome; the "Does it do espresso?" "No." "NEVER!" exchange is brilliant).

But that being said, it was still pretty easy to pick a winning strip out of it:
    84 - Saddest. Comic. Ever.
This is for me the first true proof OotS can be so much more than a gag-a-day-strip, and in my opinion possibly a real strong contender for top 1-100.

Sigh. There are a few here that I hate to not vote for. Especially "I got a 4!" But I've long toted "Does it do espresso?" "No." "NEVER!!!" as one of my favorite 3-5 strips in the first book. So, 81.

    81. Amusing social commentary. But Vaarsuvius's punchline delivery was perfect.

84 by a country mile. The way Durkon chooses a life of loneliness (despite not considering it to be a choice) and breaks Hilgya's heart in the process really gets to me.

Also, it's such a nice bit of insight into his character. His rejection of happiness in favor of duty helps make sense of his later conciliatory behavior when Miko arrests the order. And the way he chastises Hilgya for being too human is thought-provoking.

Like ChristianSt, this would likely be my pick for the best of the first 100 strips.

A pity. There are several here that would have won in previous weeks, but now must 2nd place, because now 90 is not to be denied.

First time an oots strip had some kind of emotional reaction aside from 'heh, that was funny.'

Hmm, tough one. I like #81 and #82 and I kind of hope #84 will be the winner, but after much painful deliberation I'll have to go for #90.

Did you hear me? I went for #90!

Obviously, #84 (and a few others) is a very solid comic, even if its title is now outdated. But I GOT A 4 is too good for me to resist casting my vote for #90 - Consequences of a Failed Skill Check.

Three great Elan moments: Banjulhu, V is half-camel, and I GOT A 4!.
Ultimately, though, my favorite was the argument about whether to go this way, this way, or this way:

While 90 gets a high honorable mention and would have won for me for most of the previous weeks, this week has to go to 84. I mean, how can it not?

It really is the saddest comic in "OotS" up to that point, and it goes a long way towards developing Durkon's character. It is therefore getting my vote over the pretty funny "Orthodox" vs. "Reform" Banjoism, the toilet humor, the "Elder Puppet" and the invisibility and move silently gags.
