Default The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (#0141 - #0150)

Welcome to The Stick Awards II: Second Edition!

The Stick Awards are handed out to the best strips of all time as chosen by our fellow Playgrounders.

This week we are covering the comic strips 141 through 150.

For full details about the Stick Awards, please check out the main thread here.

To read more about the original Stick Awards, created by Nazzo, the 102nd, please read his thread here.

To vote in this thread, simply state which comic of the ten listed is your favorite. Bolding the number of the comic (Like this) helps it stand out.

Voting for this week will close on September 15th, 4pm EDT. Any votes made after that will NOT count toward the totals.

Last week, 131 - Money Makes the World Go Round read a note telling that it would win the week. Who will end up being this week? Only you can decide that.

It's time to break camp and head to the assembly as we vote for....

    .THE STICK AWARDS II: 0141 - 0150

This is where it starts to get hard because, IMO, this is where the strip finally hit its stride. I'll say 148

As usually some real awesome stuff, and 141 - Horse Sense just had the strongest impact this time. (Also some of the first times we see that Elan actually can really do something useful.)

I'm going to go with 150: A Comic As Lovely As A Tree. One of the few comics that is actually funnier on subsequent readings, IMO.

Wow, this is a toughie! We have a G.I. Joe shout-out, the first appearance of the pink umbrella the MitD has to carry, Redcloak's humiliation to become Hobgoblin leader (and the reaction when he zaps the "leader"), and the beginning of Durkon's fear of trees as a running gag.

I'm going with #150. The pink umbrella is cute, but the tree gag has been getting a lot of mileage over the years.

This a weak set. 149 wins because it's kind of a memorable scene. And the dialogue is funny.

I'm torn between 141, 146, and 149. Elan knowing things (and the setup for a throwback joke 7-800 strips later), Belkar with a skunk in his face, or Redcloak's induction into the Hobgoblin tribe. I think I have to go for 141, with 149 a close second. A couple of good jokes and some character for Elan.

Also, regarding 149: I always read the hobgoblins' (real) supreme leader's remark as sarcastic; that Redcloak defeated him off-panel. I saw it mentioned much later, though, that he was deliberately lying, because he knew Redcloak would kill him otherwise. I wasn't a part of the forums at the time (I didn't even find the comic until much later), but does anyone remember what the actual reason was?

I really, really enjoy 150. Not just because of the start of the running gag, but the build in absurdity up to panel 6 is, comedically, a thing of beauty.

Kinda a weak set. Belkar's "gotcha" almost made me vote 141, but Redcloak's "oh snap" verbal pwning of Xykon in 147 wins it for me. "I can't help but notice that your sense of team spirit is inversely proportionate to your number of functioning appendages, sir."

I agree. This is not one of the stronger set, but 149 is at least above average. [now note that 151 just totally dominates all those being currently considered & several others of the next batch seem pretty good too.]

    That's... really quite tough!

Competent Elan, Redcloak's awesomeness, skunk face Belkar, Darn it Whisper, V's logical random encounter explanation... gah!

I vote 145 if only because of the stick I used to get from my RP group whenever I tried to put in a second random encounter

It usually devolved into Python quoting "Get on with it!"
