Default The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (#0491 - #0500)

Welcome to The Stick Awards II: Second Edition!

The Stick Awards are handed out to the best strips of all time as chosen by our fellow Playgrounders.

This week we are covering the comic strips 491 through 500.

For full details about the Stick Awards, please check out the main thread here.

To read more about the original Stick Awards, created by Nazzo, the 102nd, please read his thread here.

To vote in this thread, simply state which comic of the ten listed is your favorite. Bolding the number of the comic (Like this) helps it stand out.

Voting for this week will close on July 16th, 4pm EDT. Any votes made after that will NOT count toward the totals.

Last week, 490 Final Review, if not quite acing its exam, did more than well enough to move on to its reward. That reward being a spot in the Best of the Hundred tournament.

One more strip will join it however. And it's about time we found out just which one it is by voting in.....

Last week, I had the forethought to look ahead and see what was looking good for the next contest. Right away, when I got to the one I'm voting for, I knew that it was the one, event without looking at the rest. It always gets the biggest emotional reaction out of me. I cast my vote for #496!

This moment is the one that cements Roy truly being in Heaven.

In other news, I'm pleased 464 and 490 made it to the best of the 100. If Rich is watching, it may prove to him that people like his philosophical pieces on lawful good, and we want to see more of them.

Lots of good stuff here - Eugene being called out by the Deva; the attractions of the Celestial Realm (Debate Hall Where You're Always Right; "our Lawful patrons generally expect it that way") - but I think I'll have to vote for 496.

It's really refreshing to see a bunch of great strips with a clear Best of Ten among them. 496: Responsible is definitely my pick.

As creepy and weird and nonsensical as the Eric-Greenhilt-in-heaven thing gets when you think about it enough, it made for an excellent, heartfelt strip.

There are some really great strips in this batch, for example I really like the punchline of 498, but the emotional impact of 496 is outstanding.

There are very few webcomics that move me to tears. 496 was one of them, even now when rereading it for the umpteenth time.

(if not for that strip, 500 would get my vote: It was shocking to see how easily Eugene forswore seeing his family in afterlife ever again).

Contrary to some other forumites, I liked this section. It was a nice breath of happiness between the tragic end to WaXP and the rough journey in DstP. Looking back, I think this section is pretty much the perfect length for reading straight through, though it did feel a tad long as it was coming out.

It's hard to pick, because most of these work best as a set. Picking one doesn't do that one justice, since it needs the others to be at its best. Overall, though, I'll go with 500. It shows in a few pages how much Roy has grown just since the last time he saw Eugene. Last time, he was making one-liner cracks at his father. Now, Eugene is the same person he was four months ago, but Roy has moved on.

Why? Because as a halfling once said:
But that was just too awesome to ruin with words.
But you can't make an omelette without ruthlessly crushing dozens of eggs beneath your steel boot and then publicly disembowelling the chickens that laid them as a warning to others.
I know that sometimes, the hero has to play baccarat with the enemy, even though logically it would make more sense for them to just be trying to kill each other. What I don't know is how to play baccarat.

#498, because the punchline was quite unexpected.

There's a lot of excellent strips here. And while 496 is absolutely worthy of moving on, I think some other strips deserve some time in the spotlight as well here. For me, it's gonna come down to 492, 495, 497 and 498 (494 should also get some consideration for the title alone ). Each and everyone of them is worthy of the spotlight. But I'm gonna throw my vote behind 492. Mostly for its somewhat different take on what a LG afterlife might be like, but also because, all these years later, it still gets commented on.

Plus "All Steaks Go to Heaven" is just too good to pass up. And it's not like my vote actually matters here, as we have an all time historic crushing by 496.

    And with that....

    VOTING IS NOW CLOSED!

496 Responsible is the winner this week. It now moves on to the Best of the Hundred tournament.
