Default Ready Aim Fire XXXII - Dwarf Fortress

Ready Aim Fire XXXII - Dwarf Fortress

This game is based on Silkenfist's idea. Thank you Silkenfist for this! This is RAF Classic, the original, free-for-all RAF game. You can find Team RAF, the team-based variant of this game in the Forums when Lord Herman decides to continue the series (or gives it to someone else).

The main rules (spoilered because I think most of the people know them already they are a bit long.):

    Spoiler
    Show
You have to decide between three actions:
    1) Shoot the air -> Nothing happens. If you get shot you die.

    2) Shoot [insert player name here] -> [insert player name here] dies if he did not shoot himself.

    3) Shoot yourself -> if no one tries to kill you, you die! If someone shoots you this player will get killed instead of you and you live!

For better understanding here is a link to Lord Herman's "comic for better understanding the rules of Ready Aim Fire".
You have about three days to PM your action to the narrator (=me!). I will announce the submission date in the Narrator Posts. I will post the end of the round and start writing then, no PMs will be accepted after the end of the round post. If you miss a date once you shoot the air. If you miss a date twice in a row you get autolynched.

The theme for this iteration is the not finished, yet pretty cool game Dwarf Fortress where you guide a couple of lemming like dwarfs (crappy ascii graphic if you don't install a mod) to their certain demise. Well, they all die eventually, else you don't have fun. In this game however, you try to be the last person standing (to close the Fortress and throw away the key, or whatever. Bath in the blood of your comrades is pretty high on the list of the inhabitants, too, I have heard).

Practically you can roleplay what you want (please only living things), if you don't claim any role you will become Urist Whateverdwarf (name may change from character to character).

Sign ups are starting now and will last a week till about the 19th April 2012!

Although the auto-notify list is a bit old I will PM the people on this list when the thread is up (and they haven't already signed up).
    Here it is:

    Castaras
    Dallas Dakota
    billtodamax
    Lord Fullbladder, Master of Goblins
    Diva de

(If you want to be on this list, too, just tell in thread, I think I want to make a game all two months or so)

PS: Roleplay is nice but not obligatory. It just makes my work easier (sometimes at least). I really appreciate it when people, by PMing their actions, tell me what could happen to them or their victims. It makes the game a bit more interesting, since sometimes I have the feeling my ideas are repeating...

In as the bones of some large and horrible predator, waiting long dead beneath the world until unearthed by dwarf miners and blasphemously animated by a dwarven mystic who deigned to learn things dwarf-kind was not meant to know.

No... I only played one mod once... I think it was the dig deep mod. You got one year, then you were attacked by a bunch of hobgoblins. Since then I always guard my fortress with a draw bridge and an at least 7 levels deep pit beneath it.

So... "could" is not definitve, is it?

Nah. This forum lacks a good quick way to see updates to topics you posted in, and this game is a little too out-of-the-way so I'll keep forgetting about it. I'll try to follow it though. Maybe if you set the next game in Equestria, or, say, Cosmic Era, After Colony, or maybe even Correct Century Earth... Or whatever planet that may-or-may-not-be Earth that Gurren Lagann is situated in.

Well, I don't know any of these settings but I use to send a PM to every player when the game starts and then in every round just to remember them. Still got a few time outs last game, though.

Anyway, I hope you have fun just watching the game... if you remember it.

(Ironically enough, this thread didn't take in my submissions...)
Not quite handy enough. PHPBB forums usually have an "Updated Topics" function that immediately gives you a list of all topics you posted in that have new posts in them, as well as a "New Unread Topics" function that does the same for ALL topics that have new posts. Here, the closest things are "Today's Posts" and "Subscribed Topics" in the Quick Links drop-down, neither of which are quite as useful. I suppose if there was a way to automatically subscribe to every thread you post in... but there isn't one, is there?

Also, I've actually run a game not too unlike this one at some point, though it was duels instead of a team FFA. And it was with robots, RPS and dice rolls. Pretty fun. I haven't heard of this system before, so I could modify my game a little so that maybe someone can run it here.

The original idea was an RPS (that's Rock-Paper-Scissors) tournament, where players would fight duels in robots. Robots have three weapons and three means of defense, so the practical upshot is a double-RPS tournament. Hits don't instakill though, adding some strategy element.

Taking the RAF rules into account, the game would look roughly like this:
    -----------------
Every player starts with 10HP. Every round, the player chooses an attack and a defense action, via PM to the game master. If at the round's end the player is reduced to 0HP or below, he is removed from the game.

First attack choice is the Beam Rifle, dealing 4 damage to its target. It is countered with the first defense option, Reflector Shield. Any player that defends with its Reflector Shield, will have all Beam Rifle attacks on him deal 2 damage to the attackers instead, unless they also use Reflectors (in which case no damage is done). Second attack choice are the Guided Missiles, dealing 6 damage. The counter to them is the CIWS (or, colloquially, anti-missile minigun), which destroys all incoming missiles shortly after they are fired, dealing 3 damage to each attacker. The third attack option is the Deadhead Torpedo, which, if fired, deals 10 damage to the target for a guaranteed kill. The torpedo can't be avoided or shot down, but the attacker must spend 1 round to "lock on" to the target, becoming a priority target in the meantime (though he can still use defense options). The torpedo will self-destruct if its target is destroyed during lock-on, dealing 5 damage to the attacker. If the attacker is destroyed on the turn the torpedo is fired, the torpedo near-misses and deals only 5 damage to its target. Other players can see that you prepare the torpedo, but not who you target.

    In short:
    All players start with 10HP.

    Attacks:
    #> Beam Rifle: 4 damage.
    #> Missiles: 6 damage.
#> Torpedo: 10 damage with 1 round delay. 5 damage if attacker destroyed, 5 damage to attacker if target destroyed.
    Defenses:
#> Reflector: 2 damage against all Beam Rifle attacks (and negate Reflected).
#> CIWS: 3 damage against all Missile attackers.

So, the Beam Rifle is a "safe" attack option, because if you use the Rifle and Reflector, you can't be hit by your own attack, though you deal the least damage even if you hit. The Missiles are the "standard" attack option, dealing significant damage but running the risk of getting blowback. The Torpedo is a OHK weapon, but the most risky to use, and has a firing delay that alerts others to what you are doing.

I just like games that are a little more strategic. :P
I'd like to use more options (such as All Out Defense or All Out Attack), but they might be overcomplicating an already slightly-confusng game. The former allows use of both defense options in exchange for not attacking, and the latter allows to fire both the Rifle and the Missiles in exchange for not defending.

Might as well try our hand at this.
Everyone being able to kill is kind of scary. . .

In as Evertdon E Drwgs a physicist and possible time traveler.
He will shoot the air next to a time portal, we are sure nothing bad will come of that. . .
In other words, yeah he is going to shoot his future or past self at some point, please try not to disturb the butterflies as we already decided the day that he will 'pull the trigger', it defiantly will not be the third day what are you talking about, more thought was done than that.
