Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
Had your self-identified apprentice grimbold voted differently, Blackwater Park would have won. Mull over that for a little while before you put out an ad on craigslist seeking a new metal apprentice.
I'm actually gonna have to agree here. It doesn't seem right to stiff Black Sabbath in favor of Iced Earth, but then again, I'm the kind of weirdo who thinks Sabbath's eponymous album is their best. And some of the lyrics on Paranoid are pretty cringe-worthy.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
How on earth is Number of the Beast vs. Scenes from a Memory easy? Both are utterly amazing. I guess I'll vote for Scenes from a Memory, just because it's losing and I think Powerslave was a little better than NotB.
This next one, however... piece of cake. Paranoid, all the way. Horror Show should have lost a long time ago, and Paranoid is a total masterpiece.I am a:

Wildhoney lost. My life has lost all meaning.
Nevertheless, I'm going for:
1) Dream Theater - Scenes From a Memory
2) Iced Earth - Horror Show
Aforementioned nostalgia might have had an influence here. It also helps that, as I've mentioned, I would put Brave New World before Number.Awesome fremetar by wxdruid.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
I'm honestly a little surprised by all of this. I mean, I get that people might prefer Paranoid, but it's a little odd that I seem to be the only one here to consider Iced Earth a genuinely classic band. Even in the rounds that Horror Show has been winning, people have seemed a little embarrassed to be voting for it and consistently surprised by how far it's come. I'd have never really thought of Iced Earth as anything remotely close to a guilty pleasure/nostalgia band, so I'm curious as to why that is.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
That's a fair criticism. Maybe I can clear up my thoughts on Iced Earth.
To put it plainly, Iced Earth is not as legendary as Black Sabbath. Not even close. Black Sabbath is an inarguably all-time great metal band that the vast majority of metal bands claim as some sort of influence. And Paranoid is often cited as Sabbath's best album, by fans and critics alike.
I feel Iced Earth is a good band that released this great album, whereas Black Sabbath is a great band that released this great album. This is why I feel weird not voting for Black Sabbath in this scenario. That said, I stand by my vote, because Horror Show is the album I prefer.
I've already told about my sentimental attachment to the album, but even so, in comparing it to Paranoid, I find Horror Show to be more epic (I mean, come on, "Damien"? Holy s***.), lyrically superior, musically superior, and... well, it can really tug at the heartstrings. In the drive home after going to a public viewing of the 2010 World Cup 'Round of 16' match where the US lost to Ghana (), I popped in Horror Show specifically so I could listen to "Ghost of Freedom". It's my 'Proud to be Amurrican!' anthem.
And to speculate why some may feel uncomfortable or embarassed to vote for Iced Earth over Sabbath might have to do with that stigma against power metal put in place by some of the purists in the extreme metal camp.

I'm voting Number of the Beast and Paranoid for this one. Mostly for nostalgia.

That is a pretty killer cover. Reminds me that I need to listen to Eater of Birds and see if I can actually dig Cobalt.

Holy crap, Cobalt's Gin has a song called 'A Clean, Well Lighted Place." I have to get this album...
EDIT: Oh wait, the whole album is a tribute to Ernest Hemingway... coolLast edited by cleric_of_BANJO; 2012-09-16 at 04:41 PM.

I want to like Cobalt but for some reason I don't. The drums bug me. It's well made and the music itself is good, but there's something that kind of irks me about it.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
You definitely should. And if that one doesn't click, give Gin a shot. EoB took me a while to crack, whereas Gin was an immediate click (that managed to get better with every listen anyway).
But the drums are the best part! ...and the punishing riffs... and the distinctive vocals... and the bizarre lyrics... oh, and the creativity!
But also the drums!
I suppose their debut album War Metal has more 'normal-sounding' drums. Maybe? ish?
