In order of likelyhood, there are at least 3 points at which Ichigo could've attained his Zanpakuto:

1. He inherited it from his father.
2. He gained it when Rukia gave him her powers
3. He gained it because of Urahara Kisuke, who planned his restoration as a Shinigami.

He gained it when Rukia gave him her powers (or possibly when Urahara restored him, depending), but the form of it was inherited from Isshin...

...although we haven't seen Zangetsu/hollow Ichigo since Final Getsuga, I'm assuming that Zangetsu is still Zangetsu, due to Ichigo's Bankai being still more-or-less the same.

Wait it just occurred to me. Did NO ONE in the Soul Society question that Ichigo is using the same power set as a former captain and a head of a former noble house? If Isshin has the same bankai as Ichigo (He has the same shikai) why would Byakua be surprised at Ichigo's bankai?

She's apparently been a lieutenant for that entire period of time though, which just about every other first seat has been able to do.

Now there have been several captains and several Vaizard Captains that have never shown their bankai but it is stated bankai is necessary to become captain unless you are Kenpachi and Kenpachi is the one exception.

There is a chance that Ukitake recongized Ichigo during the Soul Society arc (manga 116/117).

• Ukitake arrives and stops Byakuya from killing Ganju Shiba.
• Ichigo shows up.
• Ukitake states Ichigo's spirtual pressure is similar to a captain.
• Ukitake is dumbstruck when he sees Ichigo, we see two different panels of Ichigo just standing there in the reflection of Ukitake's eyes.
• Ukitake asks who is this person. Byakuya says he is a nobody and he does not matter for he will die and the invasion will be stopped.

In the anime it goes even further during this scene for Byakuya says that Ichigo has no relation to the person Ukitake thinks of.

Presumably either Isshin's bankai is different, or else most people didn't know about it. I'm fuzzy on the time scales, Isshin had to have become captain after Turn Back the Pendulum since it was there stated that the 10th division captain had died while in the current flashback those events have already occurred. Since it isn't clear when Byakuya became captain, if Isshin became captain first then Byakuya may never have seen Isshin's bankai.

Current flashback is within 50 years back from the present. Hinamori was in the academy ~50 years ago, when Hitsugaya was still out in Rukongai. Then add a minimum of however many years it would take to get Hitsugaya from random civilian to 3rd seat.

Maybe that's beacuse he's not a Maybe they haven't brought it up because "Wait...Ichigo has all the powers of Isshun, but we know from reports Isshun's only had daughters. This is strange" and thus never brought it up.

To what? It wasn't a bad chapter at all. I mean, the "Ichigo is a quincy" thing is kind of stupid, but that isn't really exclusive to this chapter, and in fact this chapter makes it more interesting.

Well probably. But that's due in no small part to the fact that you're allowed to talk about things that aren't Bleach in a positive light.

Truth be told this is actually a perfectly fine chapter. It's just also a flashback to something that might not be all that exciting. I mean, we were about to see Kenpachi learn the name of his Zanpakuto. About to see Renji actually get legitimately powerful. But no, flashback. Also lets have more Aizen, since the fans love Aizen.

Regarding the timeline, assuming Ichigo just turned 17 then the flashback is probably about 17 years and 9 months ago.

Also, it's already been mentioned but I think Ichigo somehow got his zanpakutou from Isshin. Didn't that squad zero guy say something about Ichigo not knowing where his soul is? This would make sense with Isshin knowing about final getsuga tenshou (which I don't think he used).

So... maybe Ichigo gets a brand new totally different zanpakutou complete with shikai and bankai!

Isshin also hadn't used his powers for 20 years before kicking Grand Fisher's butt. So his meeting Masaki after getting trounced can be no closer than that.

When Rukia gave Ichigo her powers, he took them all because of his Quincy stuff. Maybe it sort of copied Isshun's zanpakuto, aided by his inner hollow, and that's why they're so similar?
