Re: Jack Squat's Justlessly Juxtaposed Random Banter #101
I've never read them. Would you say they are as good as the Harry Potter and Shaeshifter serises? (I really like those). I really ought to find some of the Animorph books as well (I was told that I'd probably like those if I like The Shapeshifter series).

Asimov is pretty awesome. Except for Foundation and Earth, which was a pretty loopy book. All ye writers out there: do not try to bring all you stuff together. It will jump the shark and leave us with problems. And send angry mobs after you.

Huh. Weird thing. I swear Tempest's post was the first of this page, and not the last one of the last page...
But it has happened before in the past, right?
Edit: And as I posted this, Calamity and Tempest swapped places again...Last edited by Skippy; 2008-08-19 at 02:21 PM.

I notidced that as well, radikalskippy (I'm not sure what caused it). Thanks for the recommendation, Kaelroth (to be fair, magic isn;t an essential requirement for me enjoying books).

Re: Jack Squat's Justlessly Juxtaposed Random Banter #101
It's 'His Dark Materials'. The thing which is not a compass is an alethiometer, from the greek aletheia, truth.
I believe the title was changed to fit the theme of naming the books after a significant object in them (The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass). But Northern Lights just sounds much better."'But there's still such a lot to be done...'

I think that was brought up before, once in a SMBG... My guess is that you both posted at the exact same time (guess the odds of that happening) and so the forum just got kinda confused and doesn't know which post goes first...

Me and Skippy rock so much! Seven posts to start a game.
And I was right calling it a truth-o-meter then. Just missed out the Greek. And the Northern Lights is an appropriate name for the book considering it's the whole catalyst for the plot, and then the reason for the kidnappings and the whole rest of the series.

Re: Jack Squat's Justlessly Juxtaposed Random Banter #101
I agree that it should be Northern Lights instead of The Golden Compass. The main bugbear for me was the fact that it wasn't a compass. A good series though. I'll need to read some of his other books. Once I work through the large pile I still have to read. I mean pile literally. They're heaped up against my wall.
I now have a blog. Have a look if you wish. It contains those naughty profanities that you won't find here. If you like what you read send me a PM, or if you don't like it. I'd like to know how many people here read it.

Re: Jack Squat's Justlessly Juxtaposed Random Banter #101
Pile is good!
If it weren't for the books I'm reading online I'd have a pile shoulder high on me waiting to be read.
Including the books I'm reading/have yet to read on the internet (roughly guessing their thickness) it'd be about two feet above my head easy.

I'm currently doing your bold, italicize, underline, strikethru thing on the 100 books list. It's...enlightening about my own tastes in books.
Likes: heroism, irony, fantasy, killer rabbits and Jane Austen
Dislikes: American 'literature' and books about whiny, self-absorbed women who need to buck their ideas up
Intends to read: lots of stuff about early 20th c. fops and dilettantes

Postscript (so as 1) not to bloat postcount and 2) fill this post brimful with Eggy goodness)
edit: Grognardia tells it like it is, again.

v-- Agree with Dr.Bath on Pullman's opus. A noxious raft of floating detritus with some poor, confused armoured bears stranded upon it. The whole mess swarmed by croaking, garbage-guzzling seagulls of fandom in search of the next Harry Potter.

Best thing about His Dark Materials? Giant armoured fightin' bears.
Not so good things: pretty much the rest. But still.
Giant armoured fightin' bears
Why do they insist on putting pineapple in burgers? It just...It just didn't make any sense. It doesn't add anything, it's just weird.
The last zoo I went to was in Lisbon. There were monkeys. And Peruvian spectacled bears (so cute).

Yeah, they should have scrapped the whole god story and just made it a story about armoured bears. That would have been cool!
For reading, I'm in a serious Science fiction phase. I've recently re-read all my Niven and Asimov, and could do with a Culture binge. (Although the most recent Culture novel, Matter, was disappointing.)My avatar! Isn't it just utterly diabolical? Ashen Lilies made it!

Wadledo, what's your idea of a perfect pizza then?
I would say my favorite is Meat Lover's, but I also enjoy salmon and artichoke hearts on it.

Yum indeed!
