If by obscure reference, you mean a child's movie that got too little publicity and is currently in theaters now and is epic-awesome, yes.

    "THROW THE SWITCH!"

    ...

    ..."uh"

    "Don't yell at me."

"Would you please throw the switch?"

"Wait, why does he get the throw the switch?"

"You can both throw the switch."

The lines are incredibly familiar and annoying me as I know I've seen this film, but I can't remember anything about it, 'cept that I've seen it.But it's a very good fic nonetheless. Please continue.

The movie's called Igor. John Cusack, Steve Buscemi, Sean Hayes, a couple others I can't remember. Came out about a month ago.

    Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon
    Spoiler
    Show
I go out to work on Monday morning
Tuesday I go off to honeymoon
I'll be back again before it's time for sunnydown
I'll be lazing on a Sunday afternoon

Same old, same old every day, day in and day out. But there's one thing that he does it for.
His time with her, and it's such a short time for perfect happiness. One afternoon. Six hours. Just six. But he'd do it for six minutes. He loved her so much that he would do all these other activities for her and more. He would pluck the stars from the velvet firmament up above and string them on a sunbeam for her, and it still wouldn't approach her beauty.
    Bicycling on every Wednesday evening
Thursday I go waltzing to the zoo
    I come from London town
    I'm just an ordinary guy
Fridays I go painting in the Louvre
I'm bound to be proposing on a Saturday night
    There he goes again
I'll be lazing on a sunday, lazing on a sunday
    Lazing on a sunday afternoon

Well, maybe not on Saturday night They weren't as special as their Sunday afternoons in Hyde Park. And their very Alice - like exploits before falling 'sound asleep, drows'd with the fume of poppies' or just gazing while the 'barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day' and touch the grass with a rosy hue.
Yes, a proposal on a lazy golden afternoon would be ideal.

Quotes from the last paragraph are from Keats' To Autumn. A wonderfully subtle and lovely poem.

    Kaela/'zira:

    You're My Best Friend
    Spoiler
    Show

    Ooo you make me live
Whatever this world can give to me
    It's you, you're all I see
Ooo, you make me live now honey
    Ooo, you make me live
    You're the best friend
    That I ever had
I've been with you such a long time
    You're my sunshine
And I want you to know
    That my feelings are true
    I really love you

Kaela woke up to a brand new, glorious day and wished he was asleep. No, this wasn't your every day lazy teenager, he just wished that he wouldn't have to face the world. It was dark, dull, depressing and so, so, so boring. But then a cheeky voice sidled into his mind like some irrepressible cockney sparrow. Entirely unlike a Nobby.
His best friend. The sunshine that brightened his life and made him rise from the lethargy that tempted him back into comforting duvets and pillows and back into sleep. No contest, he really loved his little sun - god. His Apollo.
    No, really.
And he didn't know what to do about it. 'zira was only a friend, surely.
    You're my best friend
    You're my best friend.
    You're the first one
    When things turn out bad
You know I'll never be lonely
    You're my only one
    And I love
    The things that you do
    You're my best friend
    Ooo, you make me live.

HUmdrum school passed by, humdrumly. Kaela was already off in his own world, coasting through the simple lessons made even more annoying by simpletons. He thought about his 'zira, wondering if it was just a crush, but as he analytically compared his previous boyfriends to 'zira he came to realise that 'zira was his only one. His true confidante, friend and love.
"Damn." Now he knew he wanted to tell. And then came the traditional worries about rejection. And he was his best friend! What if 'zira was offfended and stopped being friends? 'zira was the one person who made his loneliness evaporate like rainwater in the bright sun. After school ended he hauled 'zira off to their place, saying he had something to say.
    I want you to know
    That my feelings are true
    I really love you

Kaela drew in a shaky breath and said "'zira, I love you."
'zira smiled and leant in, giving him a kiss. "You don't know how long I've been waiting for you to say that, my dear heart."

Or not. I would write one myself, but I'm in a rut and can think of only one couple.

So does that mean I get cookies now? I've written at least two fics with happy endings involving you. Audrey Hepburn and the Lady in Red one.

    Here's another Queen songfic.

    Phoe/fanboy:

Too Much Love Will Kill You
    Spoiler
    Show

I'm just the pieces of the man I used to be
Too many bitter tears are raining down on me
    I'm far away from home
And I've been facing this alone
    For much too long
I feel like no-one ever told the truth to me
About growing up and what a struggle it would be
In my tangled state of mind
I've been looking back to find
    Where I went wrong

fanboy sat in the dark of his room, hardly caring to sit comfortably, let alone turn on the lights. It wasn't even his room anyway, just some borrowed space from an uncaring anonymous face for a night. He'd been driving for most of a day and night, only stopping when the rain forced him to pull over into a dank motel.
He wiped a few more tears from his face, mildly surprised as he'd thought he'd run out of them hundreds of miles back. Where his heart was. Or could have been. Or should have been.
    He didn't know any more.
He'd kind of suspected it; but didn't know what he had expected. He'd just snapped under pressure. He loved her, Phoe, but didn't he love DRider too? He'd left her for DRider after all.
Too much love will kill you
If you can't make up your mind
    Torn between the lover
And the love you leave behind
    You're headed for disaster
'cos you never read the signs
Too much love will kill you
    Every time

But now he was lost. Following his heart had left him lost in a darkening mist, starnded in a featureless landscape. His heart was breaking for himself and the women with whose emotions he dabbled with. Strung along with his slender lies and smooth voices. He wasn't going to either of them. So if he felt like this, dying a slow death, perhaps they were dying too? He was killing them.
I'm just the shadow of the man I used to be
And it seems like there's no way out of this for me
I used to bring you sunshine
Now all I ever do is bring you down
How would it be if you were standing in my shoes
Can't you see that it's impossible to choose
No there's no making sense of it
Every way I go I'm bound to lose

He was a nothing man. What kind of true man would do this? He was a shade of what he should be; no chivalry or manners resided in him any more. Heh. Shade was appropriate; both Phoe and DRider had called him sunshine, a beam of joy, how could they both do that? They never knew each other until that happened. He wasn't going to bring them joy any more, no, just shadowed pain. Dull and enduring. He shouldn't have done that to them. He should have chosen, but he had to tease them both. Shameful man.
Too much love will kill you
Just as sure as none at all
It'll drain the power that's in you
Make you plead and scream and crawl
And the pain will make you crazy
You're the victim of your crime
Too much love will kill you
    Every time

He jut wanted to scream and crawl away from his shames. He'd thought he'd found an artist to colour in the pencil sketch that he was, bring his pale emptiness to vibrancy.
It hurt too much to think properly. Was he even making sense to himself now? It hurt too much to think.
Too much love will kill you
It'll make your life a lie
Yes, too much love will kill you
    And you won't understand why
You'd give your life, you'd sell your soul
    But here it comes again
Too much love will kill you
    In the end...
    In the end...

Perhaps he could start over. A new life, a new place, or maybe he could just end this one and hope for another chance?
Even for this situation that was too melodramatic. Flopping from a sitting position to a lying down position he lay on the bed. Staring. Soon oblivion would claim him and he could rest. A least for a little while. Without them. Sweet rest.

    Heart breaks for all involved.

How would it be if you were standing in my shoes
Can't you see that it's impossible to choose
No there's no making sense of it
Every way I go I'm bound to lose

He was a nothing man. What kind of true man would do this? He was a shade of what he should be; no chivalry or manners resided in him any more. Heh. Shade was appropriate; both Phoe and DRider had called him sunshine, a beam of joy, how could they both do that? They never knew each other until that happened. He wasn't going to bring them joy any more, no, just shadowed pain. Dull and enduring. He shouldn't have done that to them. He should have chosen, but he had to tease them both. Shameful man.
Too much love will kill you
Just as sure as none at all
It'll drain the power that's in you
Make you plead and scream and crawl
And the pain will make you crazy
You're the victim of your crime
Too much love will kill you
    Every time

He jut wanted to scream and crawl away from his shames. He'd thought he'd found an artist to colour in the pencil sketch that he was, bring his pale emptiness to vibrancy.
It hurt too much to think properly. Was he even making sense to himself now? It hurt too much to think.
Too much love will kill you
It'll make your life a lie
Yes, too much love will kill you
    And you won't understand why
You'd give your life, you'd sell your soul
    But here it comes again
Too much love will kill you
    In the end...
    In the end...

Perhaps he could start over. A new life, a new place, or maybe he could just end this one and hope for another chance?
Even for this situation that was too melodramatic. Flopping from a sitting position to a lying down position he lay on the bed. Staring. Soon oblivion would claim him and he could rest. A least for a little while. Without them. Sweet rest.

    Heart breaks for all involved.
So I get to come between FFfanboy and Phoe? Oh, dear. How sad for me.

    *ponders*

I guess he's really the heartbreaker in the tale.

    ANYWAYS....

@TRD, if I recall correctly, I did one with you as well.

    *has an idea*

OH MAN I've had this song stuck in my head all week....

No specific individual in particular. Also, I am aware that there may or may not be a verse or two missing, depending on what version we're talking about here.

    Hallelujah

    Spoiler
    Show

I heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do ya?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
    The baffled king, composing hallelujah
    Hallelujah, hallelujah
    Hallelujah, hallelujah

It had been his song; she remembered the look in his eyes as he bent over the guitar, the hint of a smile as he sang the chords while he strummed them. She had sung with him, their harmonies weaving together. They both loved the song, and for different reasons; she because of the way it summoned the past, the names it called to mind and the mythology it invoked, and he because of the melody that made her heart throb with longing.

The way his voice broke with sadness on the crest of the hallelujahs made tears come to her eyes every time.

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
When you saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne; she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah

She rose from her bed and stumbled to the table; oh, how she had changed for him. She would have done anything; anything to keep him with her, to keep him loving her. She sat now in the place where it had ended. It was nights like these when the moon shone through the windows like silver when she could not keep from remembering…remembering the conversation as he crept to her side and told her the truth.

    “It’s over.”

The words had fallen from his mouth, that break in his voice that she loved so well drawing tears to her cheeks. She shook her head; she could not give voice to her pain, and with a curse, he turned and left. She knew he would not be coming back.

Well, baby I’ve been here before
I’ve seen this room and I’ve walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew ya
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
    It’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah

There was nothing left but the shattered remnants of their lives, spread out on the table as she wept into her hands.

“He is gone; there is nothing I can do.”

The knowledge made her physically ache. Perhaps it would have been easier if he had simply left; but to be drawn from her was the twist of the dagger, the blow that left her broken. The house seemed empty; she rose from the table and climbed the stairs, her feet heavy and loud on the tread. She wanted to scream, wanted to turn her face to the heavens and plead, “Why?” but her self-restraint held back the cry.

    Maybe there’s a God above
But all I’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
It’s not the cry that you hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light
    It’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah

Had he known, as he smiled at her and sang that song, that their time together was a ticking clock? That in a few short weeks, his life would be over? There were so many things she regretted now—why had she not called him back on that long, cold, night, when he had told her and she had turned her face away?

    But he was gone.

    Dead.

She walked through their room, running her hand along the bedspread. The pillows were cold and hard, uninviting. She knelt beside his guitar case and opened it. Her fingers brushed the silky surface, caressing the strings as she lifted it and cradled it against her body. She strummed the chords, aware of a kind of peace that settled over her as she murmured the words to their song….

    Hallelujah, hallelujah
    Hallelujah, hallelujah

Aaawwwww, another broken hearted fic. But it's beautiful, simple in parts and so subtle. It really gets across her sorrow.
    But so sad.
Yes, tears came to my eyes.

RabbitHoleLost stared out a large window as space, vast, glorious space spread out in front of her. She fiddled with her captain’s badge and wondered why she ever agreed to come on this mission find other galaxies. Because it’s the chance you’ve been waiting for all your life, some disagreeable part of her brain reminded her. Still…At that moment the door slid open, and Lieutenant PhoeKun walked in. “Captain, we’ve just left our solar system. We’ve entered the Nulsa system.” RabbitHoleLost sighed and responded, “Very good, Lieutenant. Inform the crew.” PhoeKun nodded and left the room. RabbitHoleLost returned to staring out the window, occasionally pressing this button or that without looking at the panel. She could remember training with PhoeKun in the academy…
(Deep, narrator voice): They had had the same dream; finding another form of life. But PhoeKun had been considered the one with a future, the one who would succeed. PhoeKun had been kind, but a good leader, who always kept a cool head. RabbitHoleLost was also an excellent leader, but she had a temper, and was seldom nice to anyone. She had no friends and lived nothing but the academy. RabbitHoleLost had always resented PhoeKun, which perhaps is rather understandable, when the halls echoed with calls of, “Phoe!” and “Hey, PhoeKun!” but people just snickered and whispered to each other when they saw RabbitHoleLost. Even the teachers disliked RHL. Except one. Yes, there was one teacher who had called on her, had answered her questions, had understood.
Master (because all the teachers were Mistress or Master) Isok had been the best part of the academy; he taught strategy and piloting. But he was only one. This story begins when RabbitHoleLost and PhoeKun were seventeen, in their last year at the academy, on a windy day in October.
That morning had been particularly bad for RHL. Mistress Lua had openly mocked her 79% on the history test, Master Isok had been called away for at least a week, and her best hat had blown away. She was sitting against a non-descript brick wall, hunching her shoulders against the bitter wind and eating her lunch, when she saw PhoeKun coming her way. Unusually, Phoe was not surrounded by any of the members of the PhoeKun fan club. Instead she just came over to where RabbitHoleLost was miserably eating her sandwich, and sat down. “Hey, RHL.” RHL looked up, raising an eyebrow. Phoe smiled. “I’ve seen you around. I just wanted to invite you to my party. It’s this Saturday. Hope to see you there!” Once again flashing that dazzling smile, Phoe got up and walked over to her clique. Rabbit looked at the invitation, shook her head, and tossed it up, watching it be blown away by the strong wind.
When Master Isok returned, she went to play chess with him that evening. She told him about being invited to Phoe’s party and he agreed with her. It wouldn’t have been good. Still…

RabbitHoleLost couldn’t help but wonder; What if I had gone?

    Two things:

    1) I can not stop laughing at the thought of being popular/having a fanclub.

    2) There are a lot of ideas hanging around in this, waiting to be unleashed. I hope I'm not the only one who thinks you've set yourself up with a lot of potential for continuation here.

    Sure, that'll be fifty cents.
    Fifty...cents? He stammered.
Yeah, we had to start charging fifty cents for refills. The store's not doing so good.
A tear streamed down from Magtok's lone organic eye. Haruki...how could you do this to me? I thought we had something special...
He sighed. Maggy, it's not you, it's me.
Magtok cupped his hands to his face. After all we've been through together!
I think we just need time apart. I want to see other customers.
Maggy fled from the store, crying.

And then he got run over by a steam roller.

Please don't judge my writing skills from this.
    I like it.
    And maybe?

Having now read it, I agree. This looks very much like there could be more of it to come.

That one did not have a happy ending (not for the real me, anyway).

I also thought the Lady in Red was written from the perspective of a spurned lover. Never thought it had a happy ending.
    I use black for sarcasm.
