Things You Didn't Notice the First Time Around
Since there's at least one of these threads floating around the OotS forum, I figured I'd make another one for Erfworld.
I was flipping through back pages, and can't believe I missed this one.
Royal Crown Coalition... Royal Crown Cola? An actual reference, or just the result of me still being up at 1:30 AM?
Anyone else have any references or gags they didn't put together on the first read?

Took me about five minutes to realize that "WTB" stands for "what the boop."

Re: Things You Didn't Notice the First Time Around
I didn't realise the lyrics from the car radio were from a jonathan coulton song, mostly because I hadn't heard of jonathan coulton back then. Oh, and Hawk from Applegeeks is one of the guys sitting round the games table, anyone recognise the rest?
Not too long ago I read a (fantastic) book by Matt Mason that touches on the effects of mash-up culture, and more recently the book by Larry Lessig on Remix.
It's only just struck me that Erfworld is almost the comic-book form of music remix culture, stuffed full of not only pop-culture references but pop-culture mash-ups, like the Jetson/Flintstones thing. Great way of adding detail to the comic without having to over-complicate the artwork like some comics do.

Re: Things You Didn't Notice the First Time Around
Feh, that whole page is a TRON reference, visually at least.
Though I have to admit, I didn't have a clue (and am still not positive) of the significance of "scruby" - though a search turns up the fact that a J.E. Scruby was heavily involved in wargame miniatures, which might be what that's about. The authors strike me as geeky enough that it could also be related to the packet sending/sniffing app for Unix, but my lack of money's still on the miniatures guy.Don't bother trying to appeal to my better nature; I don't have one.

Re: Things You Didn't Notice the First Time Around
Just spotted this one:
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/erf0025.html
Panel nine gives us the warcry 'my life for Jetstone'.
In StarCraft and Broodwars the Protoss warriors shout 'My life for Aiur'.
Possibly a reference?

Re: Things You Didn't Notice the First Time Around
I only recently realized that the "flying log" (I assumed the "log" was a play on words on "hog" as motorcycle, given the Evel Knievel look that Ansom sometimes sports) that Ansom rides is actually the rolled-up flying carpet.
Oh, and are the mounts in the first panel here horndogs?Last edited by DevilDan; 2008-10-30 at 06:01 PM.

I only JUST THIS MINUTE realized that of the coalition forces, and the wide variety of elves?..
...that the Eager Elves are apparently represented by none other than LINK himself.

Re: Things You Didn't Notice the First Time Around
The joke behind the Knights In Stanley's Service escaped me for the LONGEST time. It wasn't until the strip with "I love it LOUD" that someone finally *ahem* spelled it out for me.

Give a player a fish, and he’ll probably try to sell it to an NPC fisherman.
Teach a player to fish, and next week he’ll show up with the book, “The Complete Adventuring Fisherman”. He’ll start hunting for some monstrous leviathan to catch and enslave, and he’ll be dual-wielding two fishing poles.

Re: Things You Didn't Notice the First Time Around
I hate to admit this, but I didn't catch the Magic Kingdom reference until I was vacationing in Orlando, FL. It's even divided up into "lands" like the park.

Re: Things You Didn't Notice the First Time Around
One little thing I didn't noticed was that Ansom was using a flying carpet "rolled-in" (or whatever is the right way to say this) as a mount the whole time. Even when he used it unrolled to meet with Zamussels I wasn't able to figure it. =/ Looked like a piece of a tree..
