Speculative Futures?
I'm in the early stages process of designing a TCG game. I'm basing it on eras of man. I have most of the past and present mapped out, but I need futures. So far I have 3 Futures, which are pretty self explanatory.
I've got "Roadwarrior Future" and "Starfleet Future" under "near future possibles". (alternate timelines are totally fine. They're going to be pulled into the void Rifts style to fight each other). Further along the line under "far future possibles", I have what I call "New Atlantis/Babel" Future. Can anyone give me some different speculative futures?
GraveGobbler Avatar still made by Ceika!
I'm revamping my blog. slightly new look, very new name, hopefully some new content soon.
It's calledDiceroller FlicksGoblin on The Grid and it's centered around RPG themed films and other stuff I want to put up.
My Latest post? My favorite source of plot hooks for D&D

Re: Speculative Futures?
There's the Matrix/Terminator future, with mankind under the oppression of the AI
The Cloud Atlas/Time Machine future, with humanity developping into separate sub-species

Re: Speculative Futures?
Don't forget the Shadowrun/Bladerunner/Neuromancer future, with mankind under the dominion of corporations.

Re: Speculative Futures?
Zombies? They're far overdone by now, but it's at least one possible future that has been reimagined...over and over again.

Re: Speculative Futures?
The world ran out of oil with no viable alternative, and now electric trains are all we have - that, and sailing ships. And rickshaws.
The amish are best prepared for this future.
Also, this isn't speculative.

Re: Speculative Futures?
Near Futures
Abandoned Earth: Aka the WALL-E/Firefly Future
Techno-Utopia
Far Future
Posthuman: AKA Eclipse-Phase style future where everybody's brain has been uploaded into a digital form, and people wear whatever cloned body/Giant robot they want to be in at the time.
Sufficiently Advanced: Fantasy Setting, only all the monsters are genetic modifications, and all the wizards are unknowingly chanting command phrases for nanobot swarms.

Re: Speculative Futures?
The Post-Human future, where humanity has wiped itself out or otherwise died off, and monkeys/cockroaches/wallabies/whatever have developed sentience and taken over the planet. AKA the Planet of the Apes future.

Re: Speculative Futures?
You forget the Galactic Future, which is a bit beyond the Starfleet Future but quite common in SciFi books. Humanity has settled the galaxy for a long, long time. Thousands of years, maybe millions in some cases. They don't even remember where they came from. All that remains is either a Galactic Empire or a few hundred fractious stellar states.
If you want to go farther than that, 1 Million A.D./House of Suns by Reynolds introduces the concept that every few thousand years or so, someone conquers the galaxy, then falls again and is forgotten and no progress at all is made anymore on the grand scale.Resident Vancian Apologist
