1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.
2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".
3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.
4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.
5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."
6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."
7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.
8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.
9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.
10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.
11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.
12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.
13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

Don't people start asking around page 15?
-
Re: Il'deav Ilah'naie's Indiscreet Intimacies on Indigo Iceboats Random Banter #135
As I remembered it from when I hosted my thread a few years back we all cordially asked one another who should get the next one and it was mutually agreed around 1500. Pages isn't a good way to judge things, as you can change the amount of posts per page.
Bring back mutual decisions I say. Harumph, grumble etc.

Well, I'm not, but for entirely different reasons.

Genesis A, B (it's just plain text without commentary or glossary though). It looks like there's some interesting articles in the Old English section too.

I'd marry you if I could.
So many old texts . . . in so many languages. So pretty.

Mmmm, Old French; Old Norse, Judith, Magic and Alchemy, LATIN! So little time; whose bright idea was it to make a twenty-four hour day anyway?
Really, what's wrong with with a twenty-eight hour day?
It'd give meus more time to do the things we love.
Like distort the fabric of space-time even further to let us read more. And create terror.
Honestly Little Sister, getting your pick up time wrong so I had to waste two and a half hours. And I was bookless.
And it was cold and wet. No shelter either. D'you have any idea how hard it is to efficiently daydream when you keep getting distracted by every which way by the wind and rain. Also annoying brats who weren't related to me and cars.

What do you mean the last gun jumping RB how about the other gun jumpers before me:smallmad:, and in my defence I'm still pretty new. Plus it was only a couple of posts early. We should probably go back to the old way of doing it though.

Re: Il'deav Ilah'naie's Indiscreet Intimacies on Indigo Iceboats Random Banter #135
Koorli, have you ever heard of The Heliand? I read it (in its modern English translation) for my history of premodern europe class this year. Written around 800 by either a Carolingian who had spent a great deal of time among the Saxons (German Saxons) or a Saxon who had spent a great deal of time among the Christians (in either case, probably a monk). Basically it's a translation of the story of the Gospels into Saxon -
Except instead of just translating language, the author translated culture. Jerusalem become a hill-fort, the Last Supper takes place in a mead hall, and Jesus' disciples are his warrior cohort.
It's awesome.
Also: Perhaps we should have a rule about when the next thread can be posted written into the first post?

Perhaps.
Doesn't really matter to me since I'm not the most frequent of this thread, but I'm sure the people insistent on (the default) page 50 would be pleased.
And for the hell of it since I am on enough, but not energetic enough to post all the time...
I call dibs on the next thread if not already called. (if pre-dibs is present, then I call the next thread after that.) I don't much care if I miss it. I just feel like calling dibs.

Oh right, almost-triplet.
DeeRee, you'll have a very fantastic present for Christmas. I promise.
Curse the Atlantic Ocean! Otherwise I'd try to actually send one through the post. I've already got my eye on a pressie for a certain piece of ablutionary furniture with a very impressive degree - probably in Physics.
A quick internet search has given me some lovely online sites with English or OE translations. Or both. Happy is Koorilithulu.

Rissy has strange dreams. Like this:
Mum: So, what would you like for Christmas?
Me: Hmm, how about an original Shakespeare folio? Please?
Mum: Let me look into that. You sure that's what you want?
Me: Yes. Plus, the Bodleian had one (admittedly they sold it to Sir Paul Getty for £3.5 million in 2003), so why can't I have one?
Mum: True, true. But I thought you wanted a first edition of the Bible?
Me: That can wait until my birthday. Just put the folio on your credit card, and let's be done with this! I need to go to class.
The silliest thing is that I don't even celebrate Christmas. :smalleek::smallconfused:

Strange dreams are considerably better than my dreams. Whenever I remember a dream, it's exactly like reality, except stuff that happens in the dream doesn't actually happen in reality (like me checking to see if there is a new OotS in a dream, and there is, but when I go to check in real life there isn't). It's pretty boring.

New thread!
*boogies*
Anyways, I officially declare the superintendent of my town's schools to be a complete and totally piece of crap. Because he lacked the foresight to cancel school today, I had the great pleasure of walking through lots of snow to school, and tons of wet sleet on the way back.
It was wet, cold, and miserable.

Listen you, don't you read Da Roolz? NO ACTION ONLY POSTS, PUNK! :smallfurious:
I jest, of course. Were I actually this much of a jerk to get angry about rules of a thread I rarely frequent, that'd make me a terrible person. Carry on Nameless.

Heh. Aren't those oceans pesky things?
I only have a week till classes are done. Well, eight days. A week from today I have an oral final during which I will talk about (I just decided about half an hour ago) the role the lower class played in the worldviews of Machiavelli's The Prince, Marx's writings, Gandhi's philosophy, and Cicero's "On Duties" (all texts we read for the class). Ways they were considered to have power, etc. I only have to talk for eight minutes but it's still stressful . . . .
I also have a 5-8 page paper on how pre-modern Europe was defined by its encounters with other peoples. Not that long, but headachy.
And a big final on the Ancient Near East - New Kingdom Egypt, early Israel, the Hittites and Mittani, Assyria . . . .
Plus a Spanish final the idea of which I hate because I know how hard the teacher (she's not a *professor* - no PhD) grades.
Stressstressstress till this all is over! Then I get to go home (on December 17th) and stay there till 17 January, when school resumes. A beautiful month with no work.

Have to point out, it takes more than a PhD to be a professor.
My term finishes on friday. Were it not for the nonsensical errors in my presentation, I would be pretty much done with working already. As it is, I may be working up to my final day. :smallsigh:

At least it wasn't an iPhone. By gods that'd scare me. It really would. I'd very nearly run away in denial I'd be so scared. Kids shouldn't be getting iPods, zoons, or anything technological until much later. Honestly. They should be going outside, or simply looking around for things to do! Dammit. Childrens' creativity and insight is going way downhill.

I think the thought is that it's so they can keep in contact with their parents when they're elsewhere - though I personally just think that's lazy parenting.
I only got my cell because I started driving and my parents wanted me to have something on me in case of emergencies. I hardly ever use the darn thing.
On a tangential note, I'm probably one of the last people in the world who don't have texting. I just don't see the draw of it.

I don't like texting. It's like saying "I want to talk to you, but I don't want to hear you."
At least that's my thought. Also: my cellphone is my family's land-line. We don't own an actual land-line.

Agreed: texting is lame. Especially when people do it while meandering through crowded public areas.
I don't have a cellphone at all, and my home phone is old-fashioned with a ring that actually physically rings a bell. Love that big, bright sound. No rotary though, alas.

Re: Il'deav Ilah'naie's Indiscreet Intimacies on Indigo Iceboats Random Banter #135
I don't text either, but for an entirely different reason. Why, if I have a cell phone, would I use it to send you text? If I wanted to send you text, I would use an e-mail or an IM or heck, in a pinch, I could send you a message on Facebook. :p
I think the whole "unlimited texting" thing is what draws people. When you have that on your plan, if you do, then it's basically a way to contact someone for absolutely nothing. No used up minutes of your plan or anything.
You want to know what really makes no sense though?
TEXTING WHILE YOU DRIVE A CAR!
D: Good God, people. We're supposed to be the intelligent lifeform on this planet. Though I guess, if you're texting while you drive, the "intelligent" part is already questionable...

I don't like texting either; it's a little cumbersome. My cell does have a camera though As for ring tone, I usually keep my cell on vibrate, meaning it doesn't matter.

People in forums who don't like texting? I'm a little surprised, actually. I like texting for the exact same reasons I like forums and e-mail.

But see, like I already said, if you can use forums and e-mails, why bother with texting? It seems redundant...and it's not like texting on your cell phone is any easier than using a keyboard.

It's a lot easier than using a keyboard when you don't have a computer handy. Seriously, most all my texting is done in public (and is usually a message to one of my parents that I'm done whatever I'm doing and need to be picked up).

Not really, the real usefulness of texting is not for having a conversation, but rather to send a unidirectional message. For example if I want to tell my mother that I'll be home late I'll just send her a text. I just want to let her know about it, not discuss it. If she, on the other hand, does want to discuss it then she can call me.

True. Not to mention, if you're in a position where you can't really make noise (i.e. a phone call), a text is a handy alternative.

After 9 straight hours of work, I'm done my answer outlines for tomorrow's exam. 3 essay questions, 3 pages single-spaced each. Closed book only, Final Destination. Only outlines, though, if detailed ones. Now not to forget them...

Finals are over, Muppet Christmas Carol is on, laptop is warm, got a post cooking. It's glory.

I liked Kermit in that movie. The human, not so much.

Read the post directly above yours. If I didn't know better, I might have thought you did that on purpose.

Pssh. As if I read Random Banter before posting.

Re: Il'deav Ilah'naie's Indiscreet Intimacies on Indigo Iceboats Random Banter #135
texting can, however, work when you're too out of breath to carry on a conversation and/or want to get a specific instruction out that doesn't need an immediate response.
...Also, Texting while naked is strangely liberating.

Re: Il'deav Ilah'naie's Indiscreet Intimacies on Indigo Iceboats Random Banter #135
As is posting while naked.
This laptop really is quite warm.

Lucky. Mine has a metal exterior and I haven't found a cooling mat for it yet, so I'd just burn off my leg hair...
Hmm. I wonder if that'd work to help get rid of all of my leg hair....

I have lost some hair. No leg hair yet, though.

I need two things.
1. A haircut.
2. A beard.
These problems may be connected...
