Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
I don't think i have any skeletons in my closet, but i do have a psychotic serial killer or two living in my mind that probably have a few trophies laying around. i do know one of them has an entire room lined in preserved eyeballs.
But back on topic, i am/was probably just being over-optimistic about Dax the goblin's original introduction, his sudden tantrum at Serrin after she almost touched his book just seemed kinda out of character to me.
Then again i guess not all goblinoids are logical-thinking neutrals like me :PAvy by Thormag

Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
Ooh, now I see Fir holding the sulphur bits in the third-last panel. Maybe if you did a close-up of that part of the panel... Or if you made Fir's leg thicker in the zoom-in — it does seem really skinny there.

Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
Chekov's Gun sighting! That sulfur is going to be used for something. Serrin probably won't use it to kill people, though I know of quite a few others who would jump at the chance.
Let's take a look from Dax's point of view: he found a half-elf wizard who is hanging out in the Plaavan slums Elves aren't that biased against the Plaavan. Even more, if this half-elf could get some of her elf friends to support him and assure the public that this goblin was the one who invented Cloudkill, then he could be sure that some of the credit would go to him and he could take credit for a major revolution in agriculture. This is probably a person he would benefit from trusting.
So, he shows her his spell. Then the half-elf acts a bit suspicious and tries to take a look at his spellbook. Better safe than sorry - he won't let her touch his notes. Then she talks about copying down his work down. She must really want her hands on his notes - she wants to steal his idea! When he rejects her advances, her druid friend insults him and his work. Of course he'd try to kick them out.
What worries me now is that this encounter has probably left Dax feeling as if he can't trust anyone to help him publish. If he felt that someone raised in the scientific integrity of the elven arcanic labs tried to plagiarize him, then who can he trust besides his own race? Why bother publishing before the Prince at all? He might just show the mechanics of his spell to other Plaavan wizards. And once you give the Plaavans the ability to wipe out large portions of Kago's army with one spell, then you know what happens next...
I'm probably reading way to far into this, but what are webcomic forums for?

Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
This line of thinking gets even worse when you consider that the Plavaan are probably starving for some good ol' vengeance on Kago - and possibly non-plavaan in general.
The former gets even worse when you go past the military who committed the acts, into the citizenry who largely probably don't care one way or the other as long as they stay there in the Alavaan plains and out of Kago. The latter really couldn't get much worse.Hate me if you want. But that's your issue to fix, not mine.

Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
Yeah, I figured that Kago using Cloudkill to mass-murder the Plaavan was too predictable. The Plaavan using Cloudkill for a vengeance-mass-murder is a much more surprising twist. Though, since I just came up with the idea, it might not be as large of a surprise...

Awesome. I'm glad you don't think I'm evil.
By the way, you seem to have an error with your speech bubbles in panel three. It appears that Janine and the...priest guy whose name I can not recall are talking into the same bubble.

Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
Ok, I don't usually judge a comic character without seeing him how he acts in panel; but this Johan is starting to really grate on my nerves. He first abused Janine and to make things worse he apparently got away with it and then he makes advances on her little sister! At least this time they kicked him out of the order.
Now people, let's plan a nice dish of vengeance!

Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
I KNEW she was her little sister! Or, I at least guessed she might be, with Janine immediately bursting into tears as soon as the priest was out of earshot.
Data for a small theory of mine continues to accrue at an alarming rate...

Whew. Finally managed to catch up with this thread, as well as the new comics. The updates were good, though the story is getting dark (and likely promises to get more so soon).

Re: Murphy's Law 7: ...Maybe?
My theory?
Her parents were killed by orcs (thus explaining her attitude them) and she had to flee with her younger siblings in tow. They traversed some large distance (possibly half the continent) and finally found themselves living on the streets in some city. Johan discovers them and takes them in, getting them to join the church in the process. Then Johan charms Janine into crushing on him, abusing her and convincing her to get drunk enough for him to rape her. I'm not sure how she got out of that situation - perhaps she met Radic, who helped find a way to sneak her out of the city and away from Johan.
In other words, it's a story where all the tiny and not-so-tiny hints about her past make sense.
Now that I'm writing this, I'm realizing that there's another way things could have worked out. She might have fled to a nearby city instead, and traveled that great distance in order to get away from Johan, abandoning her siblings on the other side of the continent.
