League of Legends LVII: A Song of Loss and Ire - A Feast for Cho

Welcome! You can sign up for League of Legends here. It's a free MOBA based on Defense of the Ancients.

If it sounds like we're speaking a foreign language in here, the glossary of LoL terms can help you with that.

We maintain lists of players, sorted by server. If you are not on these lists and would like to be, please post in the thread with the following information in bold: Server (if you don't know it, it's likely the region you're in, but it's worth checking anyway), your Forum Name, and your Summoner Name.

If no reply's been made about adding you after a day or two, first check the lists to see if you've been added, if not, feel free to post again or PM me. Any incorrectly formatted posts will probably be overlooked.

From last thread - I'm trying to switch from playing "effective, but can't carry a game" top laners to ones that can rack up kills rather than depending on the other team in ranked. My best top laner historically has been Malphite. I tried Warwick, but he has no poke against anyone with ranged attacks, so the early laning phase is very rough.

What are people's thoughts on J4? He has good damage, good initiation and CC, is tanky, and it looks like his dragon strike is an effective poke.

Neither does Renekton, Jax or Riven, and they've been very popular top lane picks for a while now.
To alleviate Warwick's early weaknesses just go with a defense heavy mastery setup. I run 0/27/3.

Overnerfed. He doesn't scale too well. He supports ganks very well, though. He was always a better jungler because of lack of sustain in lane. He has a good level 2 combo, able to get some first bloods. Overall though I think he's meh and better off jungling.

They all have dashes or leaps of one sort or another to close in for poke, so that they control when they want to engage. I'm not sure about Renekton, but the other two also have defensive abilities. WW's abilities are "run in and hit things," with his only gap closer coming at level 6. The ability to run enemies down only works if you can catch them long enough to knock them below 50%, and that's the problem I've been having with him.

Just play passive and last hit until level 5 when your Q does stuff then start harassing with it. Q-Ignite-R-Q combo can kill a guy from 500 HP. You pick Warwick to be this really tanky asshat who just sustains through the entire battle and does stupid % damage, and who can lock people down pretty nicely (his mid ganks are godly). He also gives a ton of utility with his attack speed buff. His lane isn't that terrible, you just have to invest in regen from masteries. I also run lifesteal quints (in fact, my Warwick page is just my AD carry page - AD reds, armor yellows, magic resist blues, 1x AD 2x LS), you could run health regen quints or something to that effect.

Doran's Shield + regen masteries really makes ranged poke much less problematic

Trundle is similar to Warwick when it comes to tankiness and he's also not ranged at all.

You could play Mundo. He has poke, is a tank, and if he gets rolling he gets rolling.

Went 7-3, including 4-0 on Thresh, in my provisional and got placed in Silver III. Focusing on support, I play much better, then when I was prepping for provs, where I was just filling to get a feeling for all the roles.

I've had great success with Zac, Jax, Nasus, Shyvana and Renekton lately.

Oh, if and you want a carry toplane, play Poppy.

EDIT: Placement is so absurdly random it's hilarious. Like, I've seen people with Bronze 5 skills get carried through 9 of their 10 games and get placed in Gold (because they had no ranking in S3), and I've seen someone who was Challenger in S3 (finished D1, but was Challenger at one point) placed in Silver because he was still facing D1/Challenger people in his placements. Honestly, play a few dozen games and see where you end up then. Just make sure you don't pull a New Clean Garen and get placed in Silver but have Bronze MMR, leading to never ending 0LP. Try and do the opposite, and get your MMR as far ahead of your ranking as mine was last season. Then you'll get to complain about facing all those high-ranked people when all you want is an Elise skin (totally not bitter).

Yes, but from what I understand it requires you to be playing a full Tier below your level. So if you're Gold V, you won't actually degrade until you fall all the way to Silver V.

Actually, Thresh's auto is not instant. It is completely possible to cancel it without damage mid-animation.

Yes, as it is with any melee champion. Autoattack animations can be divided into two parts - in the first part, if you cancel, damage will not happen. In the second part, if you cancel, damage will happen. On a melee, this usually looks like the before-impact and after-impact parts of the swing. On a ranged, this is usually aiming and recoil (or loading and recoil, or aiming and reloading).

"Instant" here means that damage happens as soon as the first part is completed, as with all melee champs, Ranged Kayle, and Thresh. This is as compared to most ranged champs, where the end of the first part is the moment the projectile is spawned - if you cancel after then, it will still damage the enemy, but the damage doesn't happen for a short time while the projectile is in flight.

Thresh's auto is instant in this way - that division point in his animation is when the whip hits, not when he tosses it.

I didn't know Thresh was classified as a ranged champion until a few days ago where I played against an AD Mid Thresh who build a Runan's Huricane, to my eternal shame we lost that game

Though that does explain why I never executed minions when I went Relic Shield with Him

I'm fairly sure that Kayle's ranged attacks can go through Yasuo's Wind Wall because of this. I'm not sure if this would hold true for Thresh.

J4 is a great initiator, but I wouldn't consider him great if you're looking for a hard carry. Late game as J4, you're great at creating picks (EQ + Ult lets you catch people who wander a bit too far from their team even from a surprising distance; add in flash and you come out of nowhere) but will generally need people to follow up.

Jax is probably the best carry top laner. His early game struggles a bit (S3 itemization change were a blow to his early game) but if you can get to 6-7 while even you can start becoming a monster. Check out Coast's last few games to get an idea.

I like Fiora, too, but her early game feels like even more of a gamble and she's all physical damage, which means you run into things like Renekton building 456465415 armor against you in lane and just slowly pushing you out unless you get ahead early.

Kayle and Thresh are the only two ranged champs that can attack through Wind Wall.
(You probably shouldn't call it his shield because he also has shield)

I know nothing of which you speak.

Also, I'll second Jax as a good "carry" top laner.

I'm all about the reptile rage in top lane right now.

Shyvana can definitely be a strong carry threat if played correctly, assuming you can get the most out of her standard build of 'whatever the hell you want' and her complicated playstyle of 'jump directly at the enemy team and press buttons'.

Renekton is much more snowball dependent if he wants to carry. He's somewhat well known for falling off in the late game, but if you walk into lane with a Doran's Blade, rush a fast Tiamat and kill the enemy top laner over and over again, you'll be able to carry quite a bit of weight on your back for a good long chunk of the game.

Hes preferred jungle but he can top fairly well. His true damage E and the LS on his W make him rather hard to duel or trade with.

Hey now, sometimes there are other things to do. Like remembering the bork active, and using your ult to jump the other direction after the enemy team blows all 5 champs worth of CC on you without killing you.

Edit: Also, question. Mundo vs. Jax in which your jungler never ganks the lane. Is there any way for Mundo to prevent Jax from farming and becoming scary?

Unless it's early enough for his mana issues to come into play, he's probably pretty good at farming under turret, with an auto reset and Jump Strike for emergencies. And if it is early enough, Mundo probably can't push him in without getting in all-in range; might be mistaken here, but I suspect Mundo's even weaker than Jax early. Iunno what you'd do in that situation, unless you're really good at cleaver-threading.

My feeling is you don't do anything. Mundo vs. Jax as I play it from the Mundo perspective, you just farm and don't die for a bunch of levels, Jax does the same, you both scale absurdly well into lategame and it's a question of who carries harder (or if you can make some teleport plays as Mundo to get the rest of your team going).
