    Scavenger

Scavenger halts as Matador expresses a good point, tempering with the crime scene and evidence. His body remains still for a moment before backing off. "Thank you, I had forgotten," he says to Matador, speaking with a degree of appreciation that is limited by the horrid vocal cords a ghoul has. "I lack any sort of kit like that. Most officers lack an investigation kit." He looks back to the vent, nearly as untouched now as it was before. "But this doesn't add up with Redhawk's testimony."

Scavenger thinks for a moment at Midnight's question, thinking on what could have fit through a vent and managed to make off with an artifact. "The best I can imagine that could fit through is a supervillain or mutant with the ability to shrink down to incredibly small sizes. The hole in the wall could have been a red herring to keep the cops distracted while someone worked their way down from the roof." He shakes his head slowly at his own theory. "But it's not much to go on."

Scavenger turns back to look at Matador and Midnight, glad to be asking the former a favor and dreading to ask the latter one as well. "One of us should check or recheck whatever surveillance this museum has; see if we can find a small moving dot that we might be able to recognize. Either of you can also take a look at the roof; a vent there seem to have plied opened a bit as if allowing something to fit in. And if it helps, we should think about any sort of people with the ability to shrink themselves." Being in the police gave Scavenger some knowledge of supervillains in Aeon City.

"I can check the roof." And off she goes to the roof, happy to get some fresh air, and get a bit of space from the others. It was rather sad that she felt the least negativity to the goul right now. Apparently lasers and super-powered punches were fine, but the moment someone tossed a knife, that was too far. It's always the same problem with working outside of the Hunters - nobody is willing to do what is necessary. Anything above the minimum is 'too far.'

At the roof, Midnight begins looking around the roof for the vent that the goul mentioned.

"Guess I'll take the video recordings then. I'll let everyone know if I notice anything."

With the interrogation well under way, Matador leaves the group for a bit and looks for someone who either has a copy of or has access to the security tapes. Walking back out to the entrance of the museum, he tries looking for Chief O'Casey or any other ranking officer.

When he does, he asks permission to access the tapes. "Does anyone have a copy of the security footage for the museum? I need to check a few things."

    The Cavalry
"It's down by the docks," Redhawk says, sighing as Riptide's magic works its way into him, relieving all his aches and pains from the fight. "There's a drainage pipe by Pier Twelve, buyer asked it to be stashed there. You might be able to catch one of the guys if you're lucky." Redhawk coughs a little into his elbow. "That's all I got. These orders get brought to us, we don't go picking and choosing. Well, we still pick and choose them, but it's not like a huge list to pick from. Usually it's a letter slipped under your hotel room door. Long as we don't get curious about who delivered the letter, we've got a job."

Over at the vent, Scavenger manages to get the vent cover off of the vent, opening up the small hole for inspection. The inside is dark, obviously, and looks nearly completely undisturbed. That is, save for the dust towards the back of the narrow and small vent, where a regular man-sized footprint rests in the dust that fills the vent.

    Midnight
After a quick check of every vent across the museum's roof, Midnight finds the vent Scavenger had mentioned. It's a small opening, the vent cover pulled apart slightly to barely allow a woman's hand to slip inside. A man's hand would never even begin to make it in, let alone anything larger than that. The vent appears to go straight into the building, likely winding around in a complicated grid system to connect with the other vents and move air and heat through the building efficiently.

    Golden Matador
"Sure thing!" Chief O'Casey says as Golden Matador walks up towards the police blockade, a couple of civilians and reporters snapping pictures of the hero when they get the chance. "The boys informed me they just managed to get a'hold of the last eighteen hours of footage! Still waiting on that last six, but it's still good enough. Head on in there and tell Greg to run through whatever ya' need!" O'Casey says, pointing to a large truck with a door open in the back, various officers working away at computers and monitors inside.

Given the low-level criminal circles you tend to hear your information from, you haven't heard anything about this order or any other kinds of orders. You know which small gang hates which other small gang, whose place is protected from all fighting and which place is hated by others, but not which superhuman is going to steal what and where. Add in that the orders, as Redhawk just mentioned, are brought specifically to people through means to keep everyone safe, it's extremely unlikely you would've heard anything related to the order.

There are only a few active size-changing supers that are known by law enforcement, at least at the general level you were trained up to. Foremost is Mosquito, a pint-sized murderer who is stuck at a size just smaller than a coffee cup. Unfortunately, Mosquito isn't the type to work jobs like this one, preferring to go on small murders so he can sap people's life force from them so he can survive. Second would be Pixie of the Clique, although she operates almost solely with the other Clique members and it would be obvious if they were here. Every other option was either last spotted far out of state or locked up, giving you no clear idea about who could be responsible here.

River couldn't help but grin a little bit. Down by the docks, eh? How nice of them.

Still, the thieves definitely had a head start. Only by means of superhuman speed would they have any chance to catch up. "I'm thinking any of us who can break the sound barrier should head there pronto, yeah?" she asked those of the group still in the room. "I can carry one person who can't go that fast, too."

Aegis nods and stands up, hefting Redhawk up onto his feet. “Alright. Ya lived up to your end, now Imma live up to mine. I’m gone tell ‘em that you gave up and came along. No one’s gotta hear about no fight or nothin’.” He made sure Redhawk was alright, and that he could walk. But Tim made sure to keep him restrained, just in case. “Still gotta turn ya in, though. You know the deal, man.” He looked at the rest of the group.

“I’d be happy to go with ya, River, but I gotta take this guy up to Five-Oh.”

Barring any objections from the others, he started to walk Redhawk out towards the police.

"If I really book it I can clock a little over 800 KPH," La Armadura replied to Riptide, nodding at Aegis as he escorted the thief out; she smiled and shook her head, bemused, as Aegis tried to talk to Redhawk about his criminal ways. It was nice of him to try but, barring a few exceptions, she hasn't known too many super-criminals to genuinely go straight. That said...

"Destructo," she started, looking at one of the potential exceptions to that train of thought, "How fast can that flying machine of yours go?" she asked, "Or better yet, how many can you carry in it and still go decently fast?"

Once Midnight returned Armadura turned to the knife user "Redhawk gave us a drop location, drainage pipe by pier 12, we're getting ready to head over there now," she told her. "I can carry maybe... one person comfortably, but if Destructo's flier can carry more people... safely," she added after a moment's consideration, "then it'd be better to go with that."

Dr. Destructo turns off his ray gun and kneels next to Redhawk before Aegis takes him away. His expression loses a great deal of the manic intensity, becoming solemn. "It's time to leave the business," he says in a quiet murmur. "You've lost your suit, and I'm certain it will be rendered utterly nonfunctional, even if you have a chance to steal it back. There are more heroes in Aeon then ever before - crime simply isn't cost-effective, any longer." He leans back on his heels. "If you serve your time and need a job once you're out, contact me. I know people who could use a man with a decent grasp of mechanics."

The doctor turns and stands at Armadura's question. "The Hoversled?" He gives a familiar grin. "I'm glad you asked! It can travel up to 500 kilometers per hour, with a carrying capacity of up to six tons."

    Scavenger

Scavenger examines the vent from where he can see inside, not entering the vent. His ghoulish eyes help see through dark spaces, though the vent doesn't show much from where he is. His eyes narrow seeing the handprint in the vent, which shouldn't normally be possible for any sort of person in a vent as small as this. He internally groans at the complete lack of investigation tools he has on him, having no way of studying the vent or the area around any further. He would have loved to be able to identify whose handprint that would belong to.

"It wasn't a shrinker," he says with a resolute focus as he turns to the returning Midnight. He decided not to involve himself with Redhawk's situation; the other heroes seem to have it covered. "There's a human-sized handprint in there. Whoever got in here loosened the cover so something could get through, then roughly closed it to make it seem insignificant." He gives a quick glance around the room. "I don't know if the other vents were touched but this one seems like it was used to transport something. We'll need to see what the Golden Matador found in the tapes but we might have found everything we could... But what sort of hand could have opened this cover from the vent's side though?" He looks down at the removed cover, figuring there'd be fingerprints on the vent side if he actually had the tools to examine it.

River nodded to Armadura and Aegis, and followed the latter out with Redhawk, listening with a slight hint of a smile as he and Destructo tried to convince the guy to go straight, although she didn't lend her voice to the effort. Past attempts at such things had given her reason to figure she wasn't all that good at it.

As Armadura started off, River said, "I'll head over with her," and took to the air, flying after the luchadora, keeping pace with her.

    Scavenger

Considering the offer of Doctor Destructo, Scavenger looks down at the grate, then to the former supervillain, then to the vent. He considers about the crime scene once more, especially as Matador moments before had told him not to contaminate the scene without the right kit and materials. While the Doctor certainly carries what is needed, the ghoul wouldn't just think once before accepting a mad doctor's offer. Yet Destructo is far smarter than the ghoul is and would probably have been better with finding details than a cop would.

In the end Scavenger sighs and decides not to bother arguing against help. "I suppose we have tampered with the scene enough that we can analyze it without following procedure." He bends his legs down next to the grate. "On the condition that I help. I've done this sort of forensics before. We can find what evidence we need, scan it, and see if we can get any sort of clue or match." Scavenger isn't taking "no" for an answer. He's going to be the saner of the two investigators, at least so the Doctor doesn't happen to miss anything due to how insane the former supervillain is.

That button starts the scan, that one records results for analysis. This one connects to..." He pauses, glances around, and continues. "Well, never mind what. "Pier 12, understood." And again, Midnight was gone.

This assignment to Aeon was already going poorly. Did the others even realize that the heros here were so soft? While their power was great in many cases, they were so reluctant to use it. She threw a knife, big deal. He'd bleed a little and be fine. Perhaps she should just let them fight the next human. 'No, I'm the evil knife thrower. I hurt people evidently. You can handle him!' ...alas, that would be against her orders, putting something petty over the safety of Aeon. Still, something to think about next time. ...was it only her that was so petty, or would the others have similar thoughts? It isn't something that comes up normally. Everyone was generally in agreement on what was too far, working together for so long. Here, the dynamic was completely different. Nobody knew each other, and with everyone being from an unfamiliar time compared to her, she was kind of the oddball... Had they outlawed torture officially? It was allowed during the trials, though poorly implemented. Everyone reacted poorly to the idea of her helping, so at least it was losing popularity.

She continues to think as she heads to the docks.

    Midnight, Riptide, and La Armadura
Aeon's waterfront is a very unique place in the city, definitely representative of the city's very dual nature. In the daytime, nine of the fifteen major piers are used for docking of boats either owned by the city, private citizens, or a couple companies for lake tours. The other six are tourist destinations, featuring old arcades, ice cream shops, and beach stores along with excellent beachfront access. One even has a massive Ferris Wheel built on it. At night however, it is almost never recommended to be on the piers. Criminal activity runs rampant around the area, almost none of it white collar. Pier Thirteen is actually well known as the area with the most murders. Pier Ten has the most stabbings, Pier Seven has more than a couple abductions, and for reasons no one can explain Pier Fifteen regularly sees unidentifiable body parts wash up on shore around it. It's led to a rather grisly tourist site based around that fact, and a couple of people capitalizing on the supposed "Lake Legacy Monster". Only Pier One and Two are treated as safe, largely due to private security that keep them closed off.

The waterfront area isn't the best the city has to offer, especially at night, so it's no small wonder by the women of the Cavalry decide to hide themselves above Pier Twelve on a nearby building rather than risk the docks. Pier Twelve doesn't have a discernible reputation but one can never be too safe. Down on the docks, a fair amount of foot traffic is taking up the docks, mostly people wrapped up in coats and sweatshirts with their hoods pulled up against the cold waterfront air. The drainage pipe is right at the dock for Pier Twelve, and from the vantage point the girls take, they can't see it but can see the area immediately around it. Down the waterfront just a bit is a group of civilians not exactly dressed for the area. They have sweatshirts and coats, but over them or printed on them are slogans like 'Lake Lagacy Monster!', 'I Got Bitten at Lake Legacy!', or 'The Hunt for Annie!'. Clearly tourists going down to Pier Fifteen for a late night hunting trip on the lake.

    Aegis
"Not a lot of people hire an ex-felon," Redhawk says, walking out to the police with Aegis, rubbing his neck which was apparently just a little sore still. "Plus it's all I know. And it pays well, when you're able to get a job done. But maybe you're right. Everybody needs a retirement," Redhawk says, pondering what Dr. Destructo could have meant when he spoke to him.

    Golden Matador
The officers reviewing the tapes jump quickly to work as Golden Matador asks them to begin playing back the tapes from the night. The first one that runs through shows the entrance, and it speeds through the armored truck bursting through the doors, throwing brick and glass everywhere in the entryway. The hooded thugs run out and towards the three spots hit in the museum. Golden Matador's eyes follow the thugs across the various security cameras, spotting where they stopped. The thug that ran towards the lab under the stairs was stopped at the entrance, finding the door already locked up tight. He immediately ran back, already sure of his apparent failure. The other two who ran down separate wings of the museum both search for a minute or so around the glass cases. Eventually, they both stop at separate cases and peer into them, both completely empty. One of the thugs slams his fist on to the glass case, not strong enough to break it, and runs back while the other simply returns to the truck immediately. As soon as everyone is in the truck, it takes off and disappears completely.

But that only tells the quick story of the armored truck thugs. It doesn't tell the story of Redhawk, or what happened to the other two cases or the broken third of a plate in the lab. The officers scroll the footage backwards, stopping it as something happens in the entryway a good ten minutes before the thugs arrive. From the top of the camera's feed, Redhawk slowly descends to the floor, cutting his engines just as he's about to land. He plops onto the floor with a small stumble, likely having broken in by picking one of the rooftop locks. He immediately makes his way to the stairs, pulls out a red device and places it on the lock. Within a minute he removes the device and opens the lock, looking bored while he waits. Redhawk notices a small amount of red paint on the handle, and tries to wipe it off the best he can with powerarmored hands. Then he walks in, closes the lab door and locks it. However, judging by the lab cameras, the vent cover was already moved. Redhawk proceeds to search through the room until the Cavalry likely arrived.

The officers scroll back the time to the next event backwards, pointing out the case that was hit in the left wing. Sitting in the case, surrounded by other Greek pottery, is a broken third of a plate marked, as the officers point out, with images of gods like Zeus, Hades, Hera, and Hermes. Roughly ten minutes before Redhawk arrives on scene, one of the windows in the hallway swings open, likely picked from the outside while no one was watching. A thin man wearing black power armor hovers into the room riding what looks to be some kind of hoverboard similar in shape to a snowboard or small surfboard. He moves over to the case and lowers to the ground, hopping off his board and catching it as he kneels close to the case's lock. Within a couple minutes the case pops open, the mystery figure grabs the plate, closes the case, hops on his hoverboard and heads out the way he came, closing the window behind him.

Once again the tapes are scrolled backwards, this time to several hours ago just as the museum is closing. The Greek case is still intact, and the officers point to the case in the right wing to show an ancient piece of broken China, directly from ancient China, is sitting in the case. Before they hit play on the footage, the officers make note for Golden Matador to watch the entrance carefully. They play the footage, and after roughly four seconds, something appears to flash around a family leaving through the doors, causing the mother's hair to fly back slightly as if hit by wind. Something appears in front of the China case for a brief second, before disappearing again in a flash, the piece of China disappearing. As the curator goes to lock up, something flashes by him too fast for the cameras to capture, and he locks up the museum without knowing anything is wrong. The officers take back the image to the figure that was in front of the case, freezing it for a better look. The speed at which the figure was moving makes the image blurry, but from what Golden Matador can tell, it's a woman with extremely long blonde hair wearing all white spandex and cheetah print boots and gloves.

Finally, the officers take the footage back to show the laboratory full of people working for the museum. There's about a dozen people working diligently, one man turning over the colonial plate at his station. All at once they begin to pack up, right at the clock strikes 5:55. Within five minutes they're packed up and all walk into the elevator, chatting and cracking jokes if the visuals are any apparent clue. The colonial plate is left where it was, likely to be picked back up for more examination later. The elevator takes them all down to the delivery and parking area, the employees clock out, and everyone heads home while up above, something different is playing out. It's a bit difficult to see, but from the footage it appears the vent cover is forced out from the inside, the screws scrolling off as the vent cover slides off. Then, a gloved hand emerges from the vent, and like it's made of gum or a rubber band, stretches up to the table with the plate. The hand feels its way along the table until it finds the plate, then grabs it and returns to the vent. It emerges briefly to set the vent back up in a more proper position, before completely disappearing into the vent.

There isn't a lot you two are able to gather from the vent in way of evidence. The handprint in the dust is certainly something substantial, and just a quick search through the vent shows there isn't one like it for any measurable distance around. However, an examination of the print doesn't turn up anything. There are slight traces of special spandex-like materials, meaning the hand was gloved and there is no chance of getting DNA or a fingerprint from the mark. Similarly, the vent is too filled with dust, loose hairs, and skin particles to determine anything conclusive about who was in this vent.

Amalia grew up hanging out on the streets whenever she could get away from the house; it made her tough, but even then she was NEVER stupid enough to go to the docks, though now that she's grown up and nigh-invulnerable maybe she ought to come down here more often, especially since she's un-retired now. For the time being though going around intimidating random thugs and back-handing anyone stupid enough to test her wasn't the way to go here.

"Hmmm... could be blending with the tourists to hide in plain sight..." La Armadura mused quietly, pausing for one of the other two to respond. "This spot may be alright to watch for anyone running from the scene but as it stands they could slip out without our notice..." she continued to think out loud, though still being careful to keep her voice down. "Either of you two think you can get down there without being noticed? I'd offer but..." Armadura looked down at body and her costume; no she wasn't ashamed of it, you can't be a luchadora if you suffer from body modesty, but she knew it wasn't exactly subtle, "Well I don't exactly... blend," she finished with a shrug.

After a brief pause, "If you see something that needs breaking or staring down though... call or signal somehow, I'll be there," La Armadura added confidently.

River shook her head. "Not unnoticed, no. I've never been any good at illusion magic, and as for stealth, well..." she gestured at the big blue wings sticking out of her flowing azure robe with her coral-and-pearl-topped, five-and-a-half-foot long staff, a self-depreciating smirk on her face.

"If necessary, though, I can probably wing a scrying spell. Would need to get a few ice cubes by the drain pipe, though, to make sure there's water in line of sight of it to project to. That's pretty complex magic though, so I'm definitely open to other ideas. Hmm...I can see further and better in the dark than most people. Maybe if I flew out over the water a bit, far enough away, people wouldn't spot me but I might be able to see anyone approaching."

She had the feeling, though, the Midnight might have a somewhat more efficient solution to the problem.

Dr. Destructo smacks the bottom of one fist into the other hand. "Infernal damnation. Nothing I can work with." He shoots a glare at the vent as though it had offended him personally, then turns to Scavenger. "Let us see what the Matador has found in the surveillance archives. Perhaps there's something there to give us a clue."

"I can blend into a crowd rather well, if that is what is required. Sorceress, have you any telecommunication ability? I could search for a target, and you two might communicate with me at the same time." The woman looks at her companions and their dress. Her own clothes stood out, but in a more mundane manner, rather than resembling some comic book hero. Maybe she should dress a tad more conservatively? The style was so unusual in cities now that a prostitute and a business woman looked the same to her. She was wearing less than she had in her youth! She missed dresses, as antiquated and oppressive as they were...

If there's nothing else to be said, she wanders the crowd, appearing here and there, listening and looking for signs of their target.

River shook her head. "If it's not water-based, I'm pretty useless at it," she said. "I might be able to like, send a message to manifest in a body of water or something, with some time to research a proper ritual procedure, but straight up telepathy is way beyond me."

As Midnight went to blend with the crowd, she looked to Armadura and shrugged. "Well, guess it's a stakeout then," she said, settling to watch the crowd, in hopes of identifying anyone who seemed to be heading towards the drop point.

    Aegis

Tim pauses for a moment whenever Redhawk seems to actually consider Destructo’s offer. “Hollar at us when ya get out,” Tim said to the man before finally handing him over to the police. He took a brief moment to tell them exactly what he told Redhawk he would. Aegis painted the situation in such a way that would get Redhawk the most leniency.

He stood there for a moment as he thought of what to do next. He could always head to the Pier for a stakeout. There was sure to be a scrap involved at the end of the stakeout. And to his knowledge, it was the only lead on where the actual thief might have gone.

“Well, fellas.. I’ll see ya’ll later,” he said with a grin to the cops nearby. Tim took a few steps running start then launched himself through the air, soaring miles away from one ultra-strong thrust of his legs. Wouldn’t take too long to make it there… he’d just use his flying to keep from smashing into the pavement.

Oddly enough, that was the first time he’d considered that trick. Funny that.

Reviewing the tapes, Matador sees a parade of criminals coming and going one after another when the techs show him the theft of the three stolen objects. In each video, a different criminal steals one of the objects without anyone noticing. Hmm... At least we know now who the perpetrators are. I wonder if I've seen them before.

After a few moments, Matador pulls out his phone to send a message to the other members of the Cavalry. "I've been reviewing the security footage and found the thieves. There are three of them but I don't know if they're working together or thieves for hire like Redhawk. I'm here at the communications van if you guys want to see them for yourselves."

    Scavenger

Scavenger keeps his legs bent after the investigation, staring disappointingly at the grate to which neither him nor Destructo found anything. "I should have guessed that they would wear gloves of some sort," He says dully. He takes out his phone to check Matador's message as he hands back Destructo's device to the mad doctor. "We may have something from the footage at least, if we can recognize any of the culprits Matador mentions."

So long as he isn't impeded, Scavenger makes his way over to the communication van Matador and the security footage is, keeping out of sight of any cops that may still be hanging around. Hopefully Destructo may catch the officers' attentions to help the ghoul not be spotted. "Alright, I'm here," he says as he enters the communications van, halting as he notices the other cops in the room. He gives a concerned look to Matador as the ghoul's body completely halts, making no sudden movements. "I'm just here to get a look at the security footage. I might recognize who was caught on there." That's the most he'll probably get to say if no one's able to vouch for him.

Spotting Scavenger coming in to the van, Matador quickly rushes in to vouch for the walking corpse. "Easy guys. Although he may not look like it, he's with me. He's not one of those from a few weeks ago." Now getting into full-hype mode, he starts to lay on more and more. "In fact, he assisted me greatly in fending off those horrific undead. Nothing could stop him, neither claw or fang or flailing limb was able to keep him down for long. He came here, knowing that he may be putting his very existence on the line in order to serve and protect Aeon City. If that is not the mark of a true hero, then I am a giant purple gorilla."

"Don't forget about your phone," La Armadura quickly told Midnight just before the speeding knife-thrower zipped off to do her blending. "Dios mío, here's hoping she caught that," Armadura sighed.

"Say Riptide," Armadura started, keeping her eyes on the streets, "Even if Redhawk's arm got disabled, could you have fixed it? Can you fix something like that?" Once she had finished asking the question La Armadura mentally kicked herself for it, we're on business here, should stay focused, not ask questions that, for one, make it sound like she's trying to size up the team, and for seconds dredges up bad memories.

"His...flesh and blood arm, you mean? Like if it got broken or dislocated? Sure. As long as I could get to it reasonably quickly. If you mean something happening to his armor...I mean, I don't know a spell for it off the top of my head, but it sounds like something I could manage with some research."

She pulled out her phone as it vibrated with Matador's text. Got it, thanks. Nothing yet from the drain pipe, but we're keeping an eye on it.

"So, um, what were you up to before the Doctor called?" River asked with awkward hesitance after putting the phone back in her pocket. You were supposed to make small talk during a stakeout, right? You wait around and make small talk for just enough time to discuss some random topic and then the target shows up. A dozen cop shows can't be wrong!
