    New York City
    Monday, January 14th: 8:34 AM

The first sign that today was going to be anything other than a typical day was the rats. There are 8 and a half million people in the city, and about five rats for every person. That's a hard bit of math to get your head around, but the translation to human terms is this: If you walk down any given street for more than 2 blocks, you are going to see at least one rat. Its commonplace enough that it becomes part of the background, in much the same way that you don't really notice the background chorus of car horns. The city had rats, and that was all there was to it.

Given that it was a chilly Monday, its probably for that reason that it took people a while to notice. It might be the city that never sleeps, but that doesn't mean the city isn't groggy after the weekend, or that the city doesn't need a double-shot of caffeine before its ready to deal with anything today. But as rush hour hit its peak, it was impossible to not acknowledge, the rats were acting up. This wasn't the usual fare for rodents, darting about in garbage cans, making a mad scamper from one bit of cover to another, or dragging a bit of discarded food along. The rats were going nuts. With no heed for their own safety, they ran everywhere, just panicking. The hospitals noticed the uptick, lots of well to do housewife who just had to bring their little Skylers and Ashlee's to a doctor after getting bit by one of the rats. Morning news cracked a joke or two. Everyone else did what New Yorker's always do, and that was muddle on. Even with the rodents run amok, that wasn't even cracking the top 10 of weird things that you see on the way to work in the Big Apple.

    By 8:40, things were different.

The first shock hit subtle, a rumble through the streets that reverberated deep. Might have been mistaken for a passing subway train, or some punk blasting out the sub woofer on his car. But it didn't abate, and grew steadily. 10 seconds passed, then 20. At Half A Minute, it was becoming impossible to ignore, and the shaking had grown intense enough that employees in high rise offices found their novelty coffie mugs shaking off their desk and tumbling to the floor. Fear took hold, pressure building. One person screaming would be enough to set off the chain of panic. But then the shaking subsided. It was quiet for a second, 8 and a half million people held their breath, waiting to see if it was over.

Then the real shockwave hit, a blast of tectonic force enough to throw people to the ground from Queens to Hell's Kitchen.

Time Square was split in half by a 6 inch crack, which vented out a foul yellow gas. Those in the immediate area were only able to flee a few steps before they collapsed, choking on the noxious vapors that were creeping outwards in an expanding fog. It burned to breath in, not having a smell in the same way that once you pass a certain threshold, spicy food stops having a flavor. One taxi driver had enough instinct to try and flee by car. And everyone else had the exact same idea, turning the worlds most famous intersection into a deadlock in seconds. It took only another half second before fleeing on foot became the obvious choice. The crowds who were upwind managed to stay ahead of the cloud as it grew. Those unfortunate enough to be downwind found that even at a run, they didn't stand a chance of getting out of the way. Hundreds were already caught, and more were collapsing each passing second.

The Brooklyn bridge steel groaned a buckled. Once, perhaps, the structure would have faced the quake and scoffed at it. American grade steel was built to endure. But budget cuts and delayed repairs had taken their toll. The support cables strained to hold, but the foundation was compromised by the shifting ground. With a tremendous Snap, one gave way entirely, than another and another. The roadway lurched upwards, tilting to one side at an angle that was most distressing. The suspended bridge settled again, but even a cursory glance was enough to know that a complete failure would soon follow. A house of cards packed with innocent lives.

Underground, things were more dire. The Subway system was thankfully already down for maintenance, which meant that several trains were out of commission. It also meant that those still in operation were packed, standing room only being a generous description. Somewhere past the 9th avenue station, one such train was now stuck, having been shaken off the rails by the quake. The ground was moving still, and water was flooding in from above. One of the passengers, a geologist by profession, paused as he realized that he'd never seen sedimentary liquefaction in person before. He then thought about whether he'd still be alive tonight to see his wife.

Even outside the major disasters, things were looking grim. Panic had overtaken much of the city. The power grid was struggling to stay operational, as who knew how many underground lines had just been taken out. Blackouts rolled through the neighborhoods in waves. Half the city was plunged into blackness, leaving many stranded in elevators, or stuck hundreds of stories above the streets, with a long climb to get down. Emergency power switched on in Hospitals, which would be needed soon as injuries were piling already.

Beowulf is rather frustrated. He wanted to see the city, check up on a few descendants in the area, and generally have a break from his normal (or what qualifies as normal) life. Once again, it seems trouble follows him no matter where he goes. He focuses, gathering his strength, before running off to the nearest ruined building in search of trapped survivors.

A being that is currently going by the name Yume Tsukiyomi came to New York City to visit one Dr. Stephen Strange on Sunday to discuss current events over drinks.

She appears much like a human female of Japanese decent of 18-20 years of age; except that she has silvery white hair that is almost pearlescent, large fox ears, a big fluffy tail, and violet eyes that show a weight of years that many find disconcerting. This being is in fact not human but rather a Amatsu-Kami from a pocket dimension connected to Earth called Ama, but the Earthlings need not know this.

After spending the night doing what the locals call "clubbing" (while manifesting some of her control over dreams into reality to make her hair, ears, and tail appear artificial so that she can better pass a human) the earthquake reminded her that there is more too life than dancing and drinking.

After the shaking stops she checks the room to see if anybody in injured.

    Siren

It was a Monday morning and that meant that Killian was sitting on the couch in her PJ's with her cheeks puffed outwards, fat with milk and Cheerios. Her green eyes were lazy and her head bobbed up and down slowly in tune to the beat coming through the TV - a singing, dancing childrens show that she found shamefully amusing and catching.

For all intents and purposes it seemed like it would be a pleasant, sunny week in rural woodland West Virginia. The new loggers she hired were set to arrive and orders for timber were coming in at a steadily increasing rate. No one reasonable could complain about -

The kids show cut out from the TV. A wall of static was quickly replaced by the emergency broadcast signal before it transitioned into incoming news reports from New York City. "Disaster in New York!" repeated the chyron at the bottom of the screen.

Killian paused before setting her bowl aside as the feeds came in. Dozens dead, maybe hundreds, maybe thousands. Noxious fumes released in the centre of the city. The bridge collapsing with hundreds of commuters still crossing it. The broken streetways, damaged buildings and fleeing crowds made it nigh-impossible for emergency services to reach parts of the city that desparately needed them.

Exhaling softly, Killian shook her head and stood up. Changing, it wasn't long until she pushed forward with her mind beyond the material reality and extended her consciousness across space and time...

    oOo

Sirens' costumed figure materialised several stories above the New York City skyline, her blonde hair caught immediately in the wind and blown beyond her head, almost giving her a golden crown.

From her vantage point, Siren could immediately survey the grim devastation playing out across the city, as she floated further towards the bridge. Determining that it was the critical problem, her black-clad, trim figure floated over the Hudson River, hair whipping about her head as she came to a stop approximately a few hundred meters from the structure that was bending perilously close to falling into the water below.

It didn't take superhearing to bare witness to the pleas, yelps and screams coming from the bridge. And with her mentally aware mind, Siren could feel the panicked terror cloaking the hundreds of minds caught and stranded on a sinking ship, figuratively speaking.

"Don't worry ya'll, I gotcha..." Siren uttered under her breath as she reached forward with a gloved hand. Drawing images in her mind, she willed into existence pillars that sprouted out from the waters - piking upwards and impressing against the underside of the bridge, if not pushing it upwards, at least providing the support to cease it from falling any further.

Telekinesis: Fly to hover in place.

Telepathy: Mental Constructs to build pillars up underneath the falling parts of the bridge to prop it up and prevent it from falling any further. They're innate, stationary and Impervious, so should be able to take the weight no worries.

If need be, she'll use a combination of Telekinsis + Mental Constructs to form construct, then lift bridge a bit more, build construct, life a bit more etc.

Beowulf rushes toward Times Square, dodging through traffic at times. Once he reaches the area, he takes a deep breath and plunges into the toxic clouds, searching for injured or survivors.

After confirming that everybody in the room will be fine Yume runs outside, ducks into an ally and kicking off the walls with movements straight out of a wire fu movie she ascends to the rooftop and beyond.

She did not pack anything for her trip to NYC and only has the simple street cloths that she is currently wearing with her. From previous experience she knows that if you try to help these humans in this age the enforcers of law tend to request that you leave things to the authorities if you are wearing street cloths, but if you put on a fancy costume with a mask they are more willing to accept assistance. This looks like one of those situations where the costume should be worn.

As soon as she clears the rooftops and takes flight her body dissolves into a living shadow but with nothing to adhere to it looks like the billowing ink cloud of a cephalopod. It arcs into the sky on a northwestern course up into the mesosphere at 500 miles per second over the arctic circle and down into Japan. As she nears Kyoto she blinks out of this dimension and into the dimension know as Ama. The shadow makes towards a lake with a solitary house out of the Japanese Edo period on the shore. It races inside and absorbs a suit of red samurai stylized armor off of a stand, some carefully folded black robes, and a fox mask. The street cloths fall out of the shadow onto the floor. The shadow returns to NYC via the same route coming to a stop over the One World Trade Center and resolving back into Yume's humanoid form wearing her costume about one minute after leaving the club. She surveys the situation, noticing the damaged bridge being supported by pillars that were not there before, it looks like something is already helping the people over there.

Dropping down to float a few yards above the street she locates a local law enforcement officer and asks if there are any reports of subway trains in need of assistance.

    Spoiler: OOC
    Show

I ran the numbers, the character can get from NYC to Japan, cross dimensions, swap cloths, and get back in approx 10 turns of double moves.

    New York was in crisis.

It wasn't Mr'vl's job to help. She was supposed to blend in and examine this world, with their primitive spaceflight and alarmingly high concentration of genetic anomalies. But she couldn't stand by and watch as the apes died needlessly, either, when she could help them. That's what got her into trouble in the first place.

Confident that her enhanced Skrull physiology would protect her from whatever noxious gas was emanating from below ground, Mr'vl flew into the cloud to find its source.

    The Bridge

Sirin's mental construct emerged upwards, bracing the underside of the bridge. Though small pieces of asphalt and metal still tumbled loose, the listing roadway was able to stabilize for the time being, though the strain of holding up such a massive and unbalanced structure was palpable. Her focused will wouldn't last forever, but it could at least buy time enough for the civilians to clear the area and find safety on solid ground.

From your elevated position, you could see over the immediate skyline of the city. While none of the buildings seemed to have collapsed, there was an ominous cloud of black smoke begining to rise up over the skyscrapers, close to the prominent spire of the Chrysler building.

    Time Square

The ancient warrior-king, upon entering the cloud, would likely be grateful he'd had the foresight to hold his breath, for the noxious fumes bit at his exposed soft tissues, with his eyes suffering the worst. The Skrull, however, having been a veteran of intersteller travel, would find the gas a bit more tolerable, though nothing could be done to stop the smell. Sulfur was most prominent, along with spilled sewage, probably from a torn pipeline somewhere underfoot.

The two were, for the moment, the only individuals inside the gas cloud that were still ambulatory. Tourists and residents of the city alike lay where they fell. Some stirred slightly, coughing and trying to cover their eyes as the fumes went to work. Others had already lost even that, and were motionless. It was hard to get a good estimate of numbers, the yellow smog smothering the land and was nearly opaque in places, but the sound of hacking coughs and moans of pain were enough to estimate at least several dozen were caught.

The larger problem, though perhaps not the most urgent, was that the crack from which the smoke poured out was still spreading, inching down the roadway in fits and starts, and steadily widening as the ground continued to shift.

    Spoiler: OOC
    Show

Beowulf, due to the smoke you are currently visually impaired (-2 to checks requiring vision) and will need to make further fort saves while inside the cloud.

Both of you can make perception checks to locate survivors within the cloud if that is what you want to do. I'll also allow Expertise (Chemistry), Treatment, Or Intelligence Checks to get an assessment as to the effects of the gas.

    Near The Subway

The officer, at first, didn't look to see who they were speaking to, as their attention was directed at a clipboard in hand. Yume could see it was a underground map showing the network of tunnels under the city, along with the subway system and electrical wiring, though only the general layout was apparent to her, the rest being technical schematics. The officer barked into their radio for a moment "You're just going to have to hold out, we're still not sure how many units we've got to work with" before he then turned and nearly chocked in surprise at the fox-kami before him. "Uh...y-yeah", he said, unsure of how to proceed. Some mental calculus taking place behind his eyes seemed to be struggling to find a section of police training that covered disaster scenarios and where Japanese spirits fit into the response detail. "There's a train...um, here" he pointed to his map, indicating a spot underground a few blocks away "We think there stuck, and the tunnel might be collapsing..."

Evidently his internal problem-solving method has resolved to just go with the weirdness, if it meant getting another set of hands on the scene.

Yume thanks the officer and flies off into the designated subway entrance. She hugs the ceiling as she descends underground so as to not get in the way of anybody rushing to the surface. As she proceeds further into the tunnels she keeps an eye out for any subway personnel or rescue workers that she might be able to coordinate with, get more information from, and/or maybe acquire a local communications device suitable for use down here.

Nodding once to herself when she saw that the bridge would hold long enough for civilians to be evacuated, Siren turned her attention back to NYC itself. Pursing her lips, her mind racing on where to go next, it didn't take her long to notice the black plumes of billowing smoke rising near from the Chrysler building.

Deciding where she was due next, Siren's image seemed to vanish into thin air in a whisp of yellow mist, soon to materialise near her intended location...the Chrysler building.

Beowulf and Captain Marvel, admid the fog, were able to discern the locations of the currently trapped citizens, as well as spot each other. More pressing was that, even counting eachother, they were not the only parties present with an interest in extracting victims. Creatures were crawling out from the underground in force, scampering about in groups as they seized the unconcious civilians and began dragging them back towards the chasm.

With a lurch, the train sank another foot into the ground.

From high above the city, Sirin could see that the circular arena at the base of the tower was burning. Madison Square Garden was pumping black, oily smog into the air. Though you were more than a hundred stories above them, the smell was unmistakable as the center burned. Fire Alarms blared and through the stadium windows you could see the flashing emergency lights. Civilians were fleeing out emergency exits in a panic.

    Siren

Pursing her lips and wishing she could cease drawing in the scent of charred flesh emanating from the towers, Siren brought her right hand to her head and pressed her index and middle finger to her temple. A simple and stereotypical gesture, it nevertheless helped her focus as she threw supernatural senses across the building in its entirely, drawing an inter-connected web of consciousnesses that were still trapped in the building. On their own, she felt like that could make it out of the building before smoke inhalation would subdue them, but unfortunately the insides of the facility were strewn with a maze of debris that some were navigating and some were finding to difficult to bypass.

So, pressing her mind out once more, Siren entered the minds of those present in the building, her mental presence just a warm, subdued feeling at the back of each persons mind. Not wishing to control anyone in particular, she instead drew everyones mind together with herself as the nexus, in order to immediately share mass quantities of information that included unblocked escape routes to those in the building, to give them all a fighting chance of escaping.

Subway doors are not, as a rule, a particularly sturdy part of construction. They are designed more to resist the efforts of a particularly well caffeinated morning commuter. That is, of course, under normal circumstances. These doors were suffering mechanical failure due to the stresses brought about by an unexplained east coast earthquake, and were well past the capacity of even a group of subway passengers to pry open. Still though, there are few civic engineers who can plan for 'shadow constructs commanded by the will of a fox-spirit' in their building designs.

The doors give way with a split second shriek of metal on metal, but little resistance beyond that. The civilians aren't trapped anymore, which is good, but they aren't exactly out of the frying pan either. Below the surface, the rumbling of the next shock wave are enough to rattle teeth and crack the plexiglass windows on the subway car, and they are only getting more intense.

Why'd I have to fight with Barbra? ****, I can't just leave her without saying goodbye

The mass panic washes over you as you attune to the thought-streams of the crowd below. Thankfully, this early in the morning, the building isn't nearly as occupied as it could be, mostly employee's and staff. Still, that was a lot of bodies. You were also picking up on imagery, as you probed through the mental floorplan you amalgamated as you construct a psychic map to the exits. Seen from dozens of angels, you get the only surround sound view of a hulking creature that's burrowed up through the basketball court.

Thankfully, monster or no, your psychic persuasion and guidance is able to greatly expedite the evacuation. The people might not understand what exactly is happening, but the subliminal nudging is enough to keep the flow of bodies moving and guide those inside the structure away from dead ends and danger.

No need for a HP, since I'd just give you one anyway for heroic behavior and clever thinking, giving a net outcome of 0 changes in HP.

The creatures crumple under your attacks. That is the best word for it, really. This isn't a matter of your comparative strength either. It was like picking a fight with a crowd of elementary school kids. Well, elementary school kids with salivating mouths filled with rows of needle-like teeth, and gripping primitive but undeniably dangerous looking improvised weapons.

So perhaps middle-schoolers would have been the best comparison.

The alien's air support combined with Beowulf's blitz left the murderous munchkins mincemeat in moments. The key word though was moments, as in the handful of seconds needed to put down the first wave, out from the earth crawled up a dozen more, and then another dozen, and bodies upon bodies more, clawing and scampering over one another. And those moments also meant that the unconscious people were still trapped in the gas cloud, breathing in more of the miasma, and that was hoping that all of them were still breathing, period.

The shaking ground is reaching a furious intensity. Windows are falling off of high rise and the sound is loud enough to even blot out to screams of fleeing New Yonkers and the high pitched whine of emergency response sirens. There are likely only a handful of seconds before the next shockwave hits.

I was going to have a save here vs being knocked prone, but by my count the only person actually on the ground is Beowulf, and he's got good enough stats to pass on anything but a natural 1, so I'll just let that slide without need of a roll. Got enough trouble at the moment anyway.

Well, almost enough. -1 movement speed to anyone on the ground this turn, the shaking is making it very hard to find your footing (this includes NPCs).

Pointing at them "You, You, and You. Please assist anybody that is injured or might have trouble on the walkway. I am going to check the rest of the train."
Summoning her control over dreams she manifests a PA announcement in the train.

    Siren

Siren drew her brow together as the mental image of some...thing flashed through her psyche, its hideous visage shivering down her skin as she was lost in confusion into not only what it was and who had seen it, but if it was even real and not just the vivid imagery of a fevered, panicked imagination.

Compounding this was the increasing violence of the shaking earth taking place dozens of meters below Siren's hovering body, as well as a small group of workers held in a supply closet on the second floor.

Gliding around the building, her yellowed hair billowing in the high winds, Siren reached her mind out to find the stand workers. When she had done so, she grasped the wall with her telekinetic powers and steadily pulled a hole through it. While she did so, she retained the rubble the perforation created, in order to hold it out for each worker to stand on before being gently floated down to the ground.

The phantom broadcast message is well received, and the crowded passengers get a solid A for effort, but the trembling of the car makes it near impossible for anyone to manage more than a few steps. There is a split second lull in the quake, before the entire tunnel gives a violent heave and is tossed momentarily upward. Like the roar of a dragon, the supports crack and buckle, as the roof collapses down, screams of metal and Manhattan-ite intermingle and the subway cars rapidly start to flatten.

    Madison Square Garden Rubble

Evacuating the last of the trapped civilians in time gives you a bit of peace, but then everything hits at once. Or, more specifically, everything hits in a very rapid sequence spanning less than a second. In order, specifically, your telekinetic sense of the surrounding space feels the wall buckling as a hulking creature the size of a bus crashes through it, followed by the very physical sensation of a literal ton of muscle trying to bash its way through your body. This coincides with the next pulse-wave rocking the entire city, and causes the Garden to crumple inwards.

The toxic cloud is blasted aside by the force of the wind, allowing clear sunlight to finally filter in, bringing with it clean air. Or at least, as clean air as you can get in the middle of a city that is turning into a disaster zone.

Beowulf continues to cleave through the murlock like creatures. A hot knife through butter is a common descriptor, but entirely inappropriate. Having battled across the milliea, the act of dispatching one creature after another would leave the ancient warrior-kings mind largely free to reflect. Indeed, it would be difficult to remember ever having brawled with a weaker creature.

As the shock wave hits, the creatures momentarily pause a split-instance before the wave of tectonic force reverberates, able to anticipate the exact instant the ground bucks and kicks underfoot, but continue to issue forth, many now scrambling over their own dead. For every 5 that move to attack, 4 of them are dead before they can even raise their weapons, but that still leaves multiple stabbing and clawing and biting figures.

    And they keep coming.

Reflex for beofwulf against the shockwave. I would further add that while your takedown attack succeeded at just...obliterating tons of these guys (if you want a number lets say...50?), it had basically no impact on their actual numbers that keep emerging).

With this fresh shock wave any thought of getting people out through traditional evacuation means vanishes. It is time for something drastic.

Yume's hands are a blur as she makes series of elaborate hand symbols known as Kuji-in. As she makes the last symbol shadows billow forth from her consuming the entire train and every person that managed to get off of it. Siren looks away for a second out of reflex to shield her eyes, as debris and forces impacted and smacked off of the spherical telekinetic barrier the psychic kept around herself.

    Question Re: Avengers: Chapter 1 (M&M 3e)

    Madison Square Rubble

NYC subways are kind of infamous, with the reputation for attracting the weird and unsettling. If you ride the subway, therefore, you develop a certain degree of mental tolerance against the strange. After seeing a busker looking to raise funs for a time machine, or caught in the crossfire between a Mariachi and Peruvian Flute bands as they duke it out for turf, very little registers above the general background static of 'weird'.

Unplanned stops in extra-dimensional realms of reality are still up there though. And thanks to modern teens developing the reflexes needed to maintain a healthy social media presence, a few camera flashes light up. The first selfies taken on Ama.

    Meanwhile

Sirin's psychic assault finds itself at a bit of an impass. The weight of her mental might surged out, flooding the space with a veritable tsunami of concetrated psionic force. And that wave crashed against the mind of the creature and...failed to find anything 'solid' to grab hold of. It had a mind, if you could call it that, only in the most technical terms. A consciousness complex enough only to ensure its vital organs kept going and that it could move towards a prey-target. Perhaps it was this celerity that allowed it to resist, where a higher-brained organism might have been reduced to a drooling wreck.

However, it did slow it down enough for a train to drop out of the sky and land on it, so if it didn't have a headache before, it probably would now.

The train passengers, shaken from their travel, let out cries of relief at the sight of sunlight, even if it was obscured by the dust cloud still billowing in the air. They evacuate in force, fleeing from the train as fast as they could, eager to be out of the near-deathtrap they'd paid $2.25 to ride.

As they cleared the space, the traincar began to rumble, and was lifted off the ground. The scaly beast had evidently fared better than expected against the traincar, given that 'expected' in this case would mean 'crushed flat'. It was not crushed flat, mostly it just looked pissed off. With muscles straining and a maw split into a toothy roar, it hefted a car up, and swung it wit lethal intent.

    Spoiler: OOC
    Show

Yume and Sirin are now in the same space and can interact. I'll give you a breather second to talk as a free action between the train car arrival and monster attack (It doesn't count as time for combat purposes).

The train car is thrown as an area attack, Dodge outta there! and a DC 30 toughness if you fail.

    Time Square

Plugging a leak is tough, despite what folk tales about little dutch boys would make you believe. The blast of photogenic energy is a bit more effective than a finger. Those not burnt to a crisp by the blast itself are blinded by the light, shrieking and flailing as their dark-adapted retinas are overwhelmed by a thousand times more light than they were equipped to handle. Those who somehow avoided both found falling rocks blocking their path.

It created some breathing room, and that was no small feat.

Beowulf's speed and strength made for an efficient search-and-rescue operation, shouldering the nearest population out of the direct line of fire. The sound of ambulances could be heard, and at a guess you'd estimate they are approaching. The medics would be on hand soon to apply first aid.

A few stragglers of the subterranean gremlins, those who had made it to the surface in time to avoid the blast, were scattered and disoriented, numbering only a handful compared to their prior swarming mass. They hissed and spit and snarled, clutching hubcaps and garbage as weapons, but now hesitant to attack. Some made a dash for manhole covers, prying at the heavy iron lid, desperate to return underground. Others fanned out to the streets, gibbering like chips. One unlucky one got run over by the ambulance as it rounded the corner.

Without the larger masses to cover it, a slightly larger specimen stands out from the crowd. In the fury of melee, it'd have been impossible to distinguish. However, this creature was 'better' armed and dressed, with scraps of discarded clothing, filth covered yes, but also adorned with bottle caps and cassette tapes into some primitive piece mail armor. It was clutching at an electronic device, shaking it with frustration as the crude circuit board squawked with static.

    Spoiler: OOC
    Show

The plug is holding for now, but from the numbers you've seen, these things can probably force their way through if given time and the motivation to do so. The stragglers that escaped are small enough in number and disorganized to the point where police will probably be able to handle it (or, ya know, a feisty grandmother with a broom, if she took them on one at a time
