Re: More Dinosaurs than Isla Nublar (okay, not really, PEACH)
Sorry the update is taking so long. Currently, my friends want to try 4e, and I wanted to give 4e homebrewing a test run. Does anyone here actually understand how monster-building works in 4e?

DC 15: This is a deinonychus. These nasty creatures are man-sized dromeosaurids, who prefer to feast on flesh.
DC 20: On each of the deinonychus' feet is a sharp talon, perfect for slicing through large prey items. When used against prey of their size or smaller, they are particularly deadly, using them to create a disembowling strike.

Re: More Dinosaurs than Isla Nublar (okay, not really, PEACH)
I think 4e was made just to confound and screw with homebrewers.
I think some (still coming, probably in the year 2041) april fools day they'll finally start printing 3.5 again, saying 4e was all a big multi-decade joke.
If they don't come up with a worse one, first. Which is more likely.Demilich avatar by Smuchmuch. Thank you VERY much!

Re: More Dinosaurs than Isla Nublar (okay, not really, PEACH)
I can't disagree with that.
Honestly, I cannot fathom how anyone can create 4e monsters. 3.X has monster making down to a tangible science, and 4e seems to have thrown that out the window. I know Josha used to be a pretty big 4e homebrewer, I guess I could ask him how he handles it.
... Nah, I think I'll be sticking with 3.X.
Unfortunately, it seems likely that 4e is not a joke at this point (and I'm sure WotC will alienate their current customers by doing that, anyway). If I remember correctly, 2016 is the expected year for the release of 5e (someone on this board did the math, if I remember correctly).Extended Homebrew Signature

Re: More Dinosaurs than Isla Nublar (okay, not really, PEACH)
4E has a couple of Deinonychus/Utahraptor equivalents. In the Eberron book (I think the Player's Guide?) are the player steed ones (fairly low level) and in the MM2 is a "drake" which is 10th level and fits the raptor mould fairly well.

He said he'll be sticking to 3.X, he just tasted 4e, and doesn't like it.

Re: More Dinosaurs than Isla Nublar (okay, not really, PEACH)
To clarify; 3.X is definitely my favorite system.
My group wants to try 4e, though, so I am going to give it a try. Its really no big deal, and it seems quite enjoyable from a player perspective. My sampling of the 4e homebrew was far below enjoyable, however, so I am probably not going to DM (homebrew is my favorite part of the job, after all).
Anyways, Ankyloranodon should be done soon.Extended Homebrew Signature

Re: More Dinosaurs than Isla Nublar (okay, not really, PEACH)
Yeah, but when/if you include tentacle natural attacks, be... careful. I know how to put ridiculous reach on a tentacle attack, and so maneuvers related to such should be...
I dunno.
So, if each level has a maneuver attached to (almost) each specific natural weapon, does that include rake attacks? what about if the owner has an ability that makes it so he can start a grapple after hitting with that weapon (see: That damn crab)? What would the ratio of attack:defense/stance be (should be mostly attack maneuvers, right)?
But other than that, sounds Schweet.Demilich avatar by Smuchmuch. Thank you VERY much!

Re: More Dinosaurs than Isla Nublar (okay, not really, PEACH)
Edaphosaurus could be fun. They're herbivorous cousins of Dimetrodon. While technically an amphibian, Platyhystrix also has the basic body shape (but not the right size, being diminutive). Dimetrodon itself was published in Dragon #318 (a conversion from 3.0 to 3.5 can be found here).

Re: More Dinosaurs than Isla Nublar (okay, not really, PEACH)
Small, reptilian creatures swarm the trees nearby. Behaviorally, they are almost ant-like; each is performing a job. Some have large spines covering their heads.
Formisaura (also referred to as Gestalts) are tiny lizards that evolved from micropachycephalosaurs. Gestalts are broken up into castes, much like insects. It is believed that they developed this way of life to survive a period of time where food was scarce and larger predators were constantly attempting to make a meal out of them.
In order to better defend themselves, the Formisaura developed a specialized existence. The entirety of the species had to be put to work in order to survive. In order to minimize the distraction of mating, fertile females started to release pheromones to keep other females from breeding. The fertile female, known as the queen, lives a quiet existence inside the "hive" which is usually a hollowed out tree. There, she mates constantly and lays eggs to keep the community large.
The other females, called workers, are dedicated to taking care of infant Gestalts and finding resources to keep the hive functioning. They collect food and bring water to the queen, all the while avoiding large predators. When the queen dies, the a female goes through a metamorphosis due to the lack of pheromones. She becomes the new queen, and then begins production of pheromones that prevent other females from undergoing the same process in order to avoid rivals.
Male Formisaura are referred to as warriors. They defend the hive itself. They swarm the trees surrounding the hive, and viciously attack any nearby predators. Although physically small and weak, Gestalt males have a special adaptation to make up for it: their bony heads are lines with razor sharp spikes. These spikes are hollow and easily breakable. Inside is poison, which is injected into enemies that are hit with the gestalt's headbutt attack. When male reach old age, they stop production of poison and the spikes fall off. They become much more passive, and the usually bright orange bone plating at the top of the head becomes a dull gray. At this point, they spend the remainder of their life (usually a week or so) mating with the Queen.
Combat
When faced with combat, the females flee into the hive, while the males attack the threat. If all males are killed, the females violently protect all infants and the queen. The queen is helpless, despite her larger and tougher body.
Poison (Ex): Formisaura poison, only developed by males, is highly dangerous, and can weaken even large predators like Utahraptor, unless they succeed on a Fortitude save (DC 13). The save DC is Constitution based.
{table=head]Initial Damage | Secondary Damage
1d4 Con | 2d6 + 2* Con[/table]
*The extra +2 Constitution lost is drain instead of damage)
Diehard (Ex): Gestalt males are ferocious combatants, and as such are hard to kill. They fight normally even when disabled or dying.
Gestalts as Familiars
While queens and warriors are either too dangerous or too impractical to use as familiars, workers can be used. The process of becoming a familiar eliminates any chance of them mutating into a queen. They grant their masters a +3 bonus on all checks made to aid another.Last edited by LOTRfan; 2011-06-04 at 08:27 AM.
