Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
Quick question- with National Novel Writing Month coming up, would it be possible to use the word count widget in my signature as proof of words written? Just asking because the more separate places I'm trying to upload stuff, the more uploading will cut into time when I could be writing...

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
Ooo, awesome. I'll use the challenge to help bug me to do NaNo if I get round to doing it. Still not sure if I'll have time, but I might try it.

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
Can I enter something retroactively? I just found this challenge today, but I wrote parts II and III of this Dungeons and Dragons work in the past few days. The wordcount for those is 2286, and it even includes the fire theme!
(I hope I'm reading the rules on "works-in-progress" right, 'cause the WLD is my only current project that's able to be published right now).

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
Sweet! Welcome aboard Are you gonna use a counter as proof, like Mercenary does?
Sure. Works done in the week of your entry counts towards that week (but you can't go further back).
"works in progress" is in place to prevent sketches and barely-strung-together written works. But 250 words out of a larger piece definitely counts. We can't have people write six novels every week
Welcome aboard to you, too!Spoiler

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
Finished about a case file and a half. This one was much shorter, too. Case File 8 was only 1400 words, so it's good I started on 9.

History:
Alexander Patrus Seraphiel Sky was born to a relatively poor family within the Kingdom of Dawnstar in the year 297. From a young age, Sky showed interest in doing good, and potential for becoming a protector of the realm, picking up the basics of swordsmanship by watching the Knights of Dawn when they would train. At the age of twelve, he started his apprenticeship. He was recognized for his drive to good and to improve himself, and in 311, at the age of fourteen, Sky was selected by Knight Commander Gabriel Castitas Virtue to graduate apprenticeship a year early and become the Knight Commander’s personal squire.
Sky became known even as a squire, joining Knight Commander Virtue on a range of notable events. It has been noted by his peers among the squires, many of them now Knights of Dawn, that Sky was an inspiration to be looked up to, even among those several years older. Sky rode alongside the Knight Commander and the Knights of Dawn into a number of missions generally beyond the expectation of squires, on both his own and his Knight Commander Virtue’s insistence.
In 314, Sky passed the Morning Trial and became the youngest Knight of Dawn in the history of the kingdom, at the age of 17. As one of the Knights of Dawn, Sky pursued his duties with a fervor and righteousness unseen even among other holy knights, tempered with a compassion and mercy he was renowned for throughout Dawnstar. In a number of different encounters, Sky was able to find merciful solutions to scenarios other knights could were unable to peacefully solve.
The most notable event within Sky’s early career is the revealing of the Twilight Dragoons. This organization had existed within the Kingdom of Dawnstar in secret for approximately a century, operating outside the eyes of the royal family and the Knights of Dawn, carrying out vigilante acts deemed as justified by their order. Sky discovered the Twilight Dragoons through another Knight of Dawn, Sir Michael Aurum, as many of the Knights also served within this secret order, attempting to bring their own ideas of justice to those they felt were not fully dealt with by the kingdom’s laws. Sky joined the Twilight Dragoons, completing this secret order’s training so as to learn as much as possible about their methods and their leaders. In 316, after six months in their ranks, Sky revealed the Twilight Dragoons to the world, capturing seven other Knights of Dawn and presenting them as vigilantes to the crown, including the four primary leaders of the Dragoons, with extensive evidence to back his claims. In doing, Sky also freely offered himself to face the same trial and charges as a member of the Twilight Dragoons, despite his not having carried out any of their missions during his time in the secret order. The seven Knights, as well as a number of other revealed members were tried and sentenced appropriately, most of whom willingly accepted their sentences, which as with most in the Kingdom of Dawnstar, centered around imprisonment and productive labor to benefit the kingdom. The royal family refused to put Sky on trial, deeming his actions to be entirely within keeping of a true Knight of Dawn. Sky however, still joined the other Twilight Dragoons in simple manual labor regularly over the next decade when he was not acting as a Knight, serving out an equivalent sentence of his own volition.
In 319, Knight Commander Gabriel Castitas Virtue resigned at the age of 59, and the position of Knight Commander was won in divine trial by Sky, to the celebration of his peers among the Knights of Dawn. It was universally acknowledged by the Knights that there was no better leader among their number. Over the course of his over twenty years as Knight Commander, Sky accomplished an incredible range of feats of heroism, primarily within Dawnstar but many with even worldwide significance, including traveling to the Empire of the Sands to serve as a general during the First Demon War in the year 329. In addition to being one of the most capable warriors of the world, Sky was renowned as a talented channeler of divine magic, and over the course of his numerous encounters, duties, and adventures, he is known to have acquired a variety of other capabilities.
As with most Knight Commanders, Sky became very close to the royal family, often serving as champion, escort, and royal protector, as well as a personal friend to the king and queen. After the heir was born in 330, Sky even supported her schooling as heir to the throne, as well as teaching her the basics of swordplay as she grew older.
Over the course of his service as Knight Commander, Sky had taken several squires, and trained them to full Knights of Dawn. In 334, Sky took another squire, a young woman by the name of Aurora Caritas Mera, and as usual committed a large amount of his time to her training, becoming slightly less active among the rest of the Knights of Dawn. In 339, Mera fought alongside Sky in Dawnstar during the Second Demon War, with the exception of a number of forays made by Sky alone into enemy lines.
Also of note was one assassination attempt made during the war against the royal family. Through methods not known, a demon reached the royal chambers and attacked the three members of the royal family, however Sky was present at the time, and was able to kill the assassin.
Shortly after these events, the Second Demon War came to a close. Aurora Caritas Mera passed the Morning Trial and became a knight, however though he was no longer training a squire, Sky remained somewhat detached from the Knights, spending more time directly protecting the royal family.
In the evening on the 24th day of the 7th month in the year 340, Alexander Sky walked out of the royal palace. People noted he was extremely reserved and serious, much more so than Sky usually acted, and did not respond to any comments or greetings. He was wearing his full Knight Commander’s gear, with his sword, armor, and shield all spattered with fresh blood. Sky left the palace on foot, walking to an unknown destination.
Within a few hours of this event, the royal family was found in their room, dead. All three had been struck by simple lethal blows from a large blade, fitting the description of the Knight’s sword of Alexander Sky.
The following morning, Sky arrived on foot, still in his full Knight Commander’s equipment and still bloodied at the Lock prison facility. He stated outright that he had killed the king, queen, and princess of the Kingdom of Dawnstar the previous evening, and offered himself for imprisonment in the Lock. Knight Commander Alexander Patrus Seraphiel Sky was tried and found guilty of 3 counts of Regicide, and was sentenced to life in prison within the Lock prison facility. Sky’s squire, Aurora Caritas Mera has taken it as her responsibility to determine the reason for Sky’s murders, which he refuses to explain, and has taken the role in the prison of Lock Scholar 8.
Known Capabilities:
Alexander Sky is an extremely capable warrior, armed or unarmed, and with a variety of weapons, however his specialization is with his Knight Commander’s greatsword and his shield, which he is capable of wielding together to great effect. His tactics and military strategy are widely renowned, having served as general in both Demon Wars. It is also believed that the general and gradual influence of the divine which supports Knights of Dawn, gradually built over a period of twenty years, has left him stronger and faster than an average mortal human.
Sky is also known to be a highly capable channeler of divine magic, able to heal, harm, and interact with spirits in the same capacities of an experienced cleric.
Scholar Mera has reported that Sky also has a slight hand for arcane magic, primarily defensive, but between his interactions with such a large number of arcane beings and objects of enormous varieties, he does have some capacity.
Sky’s training as a Twilight Dragoon is also of note, as it provides him with certain covert operations capabilities, including training in stealth, ambushes, and poisons. It is believed that as a Twilight Dragoon, Sky also has built a natural immunity to common poisons.
History:
The first information regarding the Alias case was unearthed by Independent Investigator Jacob Havoc. In the year 329, a wealthy businessman by the name of Ermine Calx within the Spire city of Peak was found killed, with his soul damaged in an unrecognized way, the whole of his positive emotional range seemingly violently removed. After a full investigation, Spire Authority filed the case as unresolved, and Investigator Havoc was hired to further pursue the situation. After about one month’s research, Investigator Havoc was unable to produce any further information regarding the case.
Two months later, a second case, the death of a Spire politician named Lorian Black, was filed unresolved and passed by a relative to Independent Investigator Jacob Havoc. His investigations discovered a similar damage caused to the soul as in the Calx murder, with the victim in this case seeming to have lost the capacity to interpret language. Havoc linked the cases and began a more extensive investigation into the apparent pattern. After undertaking several further investigations of several other unresolved Spire Authority cases, Havoc concluded several other unresolved murder cases filed during this two month period followed the same pattern.
Havoc’s investigations continued over the course of the following year, finding numerous additional cases occurring following this same pattern of soul damage. Havoc eventually linked the events to a highly illegal procedure referred to as “Soul Grafting”. The particular damage pattern observed in each case was in keeping with the theoretical results of this highly illegal procedure first developed in the year 292 by a pair of independent medical researchers, Jonathan Kale and Xerxes Sveran.
When Kale and Sveran discovered potential methods to interact surgically with the human soul, the two concealed their research, considering the potential ramifications to be serious enough they chose to avoid publishing. In 301, Xerxes Sveran was reported missing, and no details regarding his disappearance were ever recorded. In 315, Jonathan Kale was killed in a laboratory accident, although some theorize the man’s death was not accidental, but a suicide. Kale and Sveran’s research regarding surgical interactions with souls was unearthed by the team of doctors investigating their papers, including a young doctor Amadeus Conte, who would later go on to become the head surgeon of the Halls of Hope.
Havoc continued tracking the cases of soul grafted murders, keeping records and working alongside the Spire Authority. Over the course of the next two years, Havoc began working further and further on his own, focusing a large portion of his time upon this case. Eventually, after extensive research and several possible encounters with the killer, Havoc concluded that while there was a single killer, they were capable, by methods unknown, of changing their appearance. In 332, Havoc stopped all other investigation work, focusing on the so named Alias case to the exclusion of all other research, turning down all other cases offered to him.
As far as "fiery intensity" I'm not sure if I meet the theme. Both Alexander Sky and Jacob Havoc are fairly intense, but not necessarily in a fiery passion kind of way?Last edited by Icewalker; 2012-10-14 at 11:24 PM.

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
1,891 words of various things. Which, this time, aren't nicely separated into different quote tags, just split with dashes inside one, since I'm simply not up to doing that right now, what with the forum search being down and everything.

Castaras, I'll put you on the list when I have a confirmation and an idea how to find/check your writings
Icewalker, I'd say "fairly intense" doesn't count in a fire theme. But I think flyingchicken has final say over that.
flyingchicken, doodles don't count towards the Challenge. I'm a bit torn in regards to a full doodle page, but so far it's only been okay'ed for someone who was trying to learn.
The Second: Oh my gosh, I'm sorry, I completely missed your post until now. Welcome! Just provide a link to your writings (or post them here), and you're all set.Last edited by Glass Mouse; 2012-10-16 at 11:05 AM.

For this week's theme, I choose duality. (And I look forward to seeing what people come up with in response to that!)

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
This sounds fun. I am trying to pick up drawing again and some doodles I made last weekend made me thing that I have reached the point where I go from talented to being actually skilled. If I can just keep it up for a while and practice. Which is kind of what this thread is about, yes?
So every monday, one person selects a theme and then everyone has to produce six things until sunday evening? And as long as you can keep up with that pace, you increase your counter for bragging points. I'd like to jump on to this.We are not standing on the shoulders of giants, but on very tall tower of other dwarves.

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
I'm now rushing to get the required amount of words done on my DND WIP, due to shenanigans earlier in the week. I'll edit this post with the link once I'm done with that.
In the meantime, have a poem resembling the Fibonnaci sequence ascending then descending:

Done in that form because I am a nerd and also why not.
Edited to add:
World's Largest Dungeon: Lots And Lots of Blood Part IV. The word count on that is 1110. I'll have to get another poem or something up so I can qualify.
Second edit:
I wrote a haiku. It's not my best work, but hey, I got another week under my belt!

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
While I'm on here, I may as well.
The rest of case file 9, and all of 10. Just only over 1500 words.
Spoiler
Over the course of the next five years, Havoc hunted the Alias killer across the entirety of the Spire, between Peak, Old Chasm, Hawkhaven, Iron Heights, the Living Market, and the Spire Halo. In 337, Havoc pursued the Alias killer to the Empire of the Sands, in which he reported several further encounters with the killer. In 338, Havoc broke into the royal palace in the Empire of the Sands, and cornered and confronted the crown prince, holding the boy hostage. Havoc demanded the prince’s room be investigated. Court Mages arrived on the scene shortly afterwards, and disabled Havoc. However, within the same period of time, Vizier Satef acted on Havoc’s statements, and returned as the Court Mages intervened, having discovered the dead body of the crown prince hidden within his chambers. On the Vizier’s orders, the Court Mages accosted the crown prince Havoc had confronted, stopping him from leaving, and contained him.
Havoc insisted that the Alias Killer had taken the form of the crown prince of the Empire of the Sands. Vizier Satef supported the investigator’s claim, as did certain others. In agreement with the royal family of the Empire of the Sands, the Lock prison facility held trial for the accused, and concluded that there was insufficient evidence to convict, and would allow the Empire of the Sands to conduct investigations hold trials against both Investigator Havoc as well as Vizier Satef for their actions. As the royal family left the courtroom, Havoc attacked the accused with a blade he had smuggled into the court. Witnesses in the courtroom, including the royal family, report seeing the accused’s body shift in a way utterly impossible for a human body. Havoc struggled with the accused, whose shape changed between several forms before Lock staff and Court Mages separated the two and took the accused back into custody. The accused was re-tried given new evidence, and was found guilty of 62 counts of Murder of the 2nd Gauge, 1 count of Regicide, and Practice of Priority II Illegal Magic, and was sentenced to life in prison within the Lock prison facility. Upon the request of the court, Investigator Jacob Havoc took the position of Lock Scholar 9 to continue observations of the convict.
On the 19th day of the 3rd month, in the year 440, the occupant of Cell 9, having often changed form and appearance with its confines, returned to its cell after a regular scholar’s session in the appearance of Scholar Jacob Havoc. The occupant of Cell 9 has retained this appearance through the last year and a half, continuously claiming to be Scholar Havoc. On the outside of the cell, the effectively identical Scholar Havoc has stated that this is a further manipulation by the Alias killer. Some have theorized otherwise, however no conclusive evidence has been drawn in either direction.
Known Capabilities:
The particulars of the Alias killer’s abilities are unknown. Havoc has stated that it is capable of changing its appearance and form with great rapidity, with no known way to differentiate between Alias and those who it has taken the form of. Alias has not been seen to take the form of anybody it has not encountered and attacked. In battle, Alias has been seen to change forms with sufficient speed and precision to avoid the blows of weapons. It is unknown how the being is capable of such changes.
Havoc has noted that Alias is capable of learning any and all knowledge and memories of those he has taken the form of. It is unknown whether he also gains the skills of those he has harmed, both physical or otherwise, such as magical ability; Alias has not been seen to use any clerical or arcane magic in encounters.
The Alias killer’s victims have been found with their souls damaged, in keeping with the soul grafting procedures designed by Jonathan Gabriel Falx and Xerxes Sveran. It is unknown what capabilities this grafting may confer, nor whether his knowledge of soul grafts is different or more extensive than the original designs proposed by Researchers Falx and Sveran.
Prisoner File for Cell 10
Occupant:
Amadeus Conté
Crimes:
Murder of the 1st Gauge (171 Counts)
Date Imprisoned:
Imprisoned the 29th day of the 5th month, in the year 337
Transferred to the Lock prison facility on the 14th day of the 9th month, in the year 337
3 years, 3 months, 2 days to the date.
Classification:
Human
History:
The early life of Amadeus Conté is almost entirely unknown. Orphaned young, he was adopted in the year 308, at the age of 14, by the then retired medical researcher Jonathan Gabriel Falx. As Falx lived a highly reclusive lifestyle, there are effectively no records of his early or late childhood. In the year 315, Falx died in a chemical laboratory accident, leaving Conté his estate.
Shortly after Falx’s death, Conté discovered old research files written by Falx and his colleague Xerxes Sveran detailing the procedures of soul grafting developed by the two in the year 292, which were never published by the researchers. The procedure was considered by the officials of the Halls of Hope and deemed immoral and illegal. This ban was acknowledged and brought into effect by the Spire and the Empire of the Sands, as well as by the Kingdom of Dawnstar.
Conté followed the career of his adopted father, becoming an official surgeon in the Halls of Hope at the young age of 23, and was considered among his colleagues to be one of the most competent surgeons in the Halls, even right from the end of his training in 317. Over the course of the next 9 years, Conté continued to serve in the Halls of Hope as a surgeon of renowned ability. In 326 he was given the position of Head Surgeon within the Halls of Hope, a position he held for the next 10 years, generally considered to be one of the most capable surgeons in medical history.
Between the years 330 and 336, a number of deaths occurred within the Halls of Hope, seeming to be the result of unexpected allergic reactions and abnormal responses to medication. In 336, a Hope doctor named Raphael Ophiuchus Oros and a Knight of Dawn named Iustitia Ariel presented evidence that this large series of deaths was the result of intentional malpractice, via the modification of medications given to certain patients. Oros had concluded that the pattern in the deaths was the result of the same modification in medicine across over a hundred cases. Dame Ariel noted that every patient found dead in such a way seemed to have some history of crime, including numerous criminals who had served and finished a sentence, and individuals tried but found innocent. When investigated by the Halls, the pattern was acknowledged, and the lethal changes to the medication was traced to Amadeus Conté. Conté was tried by the Kingdom of Dawnstar for the murder of 168 patients over the course of 8 years. Conté was found guilty, and sentenced to life imprisoned with productive labor for the Kingdom.
Shortly after his imprisonment, Conté escaped his guards during a session of labor, and was found afterwards with the dead body of another prisoner, a Twilight Dragoon and Knight of Dawn named Michael Iblis brought in by Alexander Sky ten years prior. Conté had killed the man with a scalpel, without apparent evidence of a fight. It is unknown where the prisoner acquired the blade, but it was confiscated and removed from the facility. Conté’s sentence was modified, limiting his allowances out of his cell and ceasing labor opportunities. Weeks after this incident, Conté was discovered to be missing from his cell, and was found with the dead body of another prisoner, similarly a Twilight Dragoon and Knight of Dawn, named Opalus Telemachus. Again, via methods unknown, Conté had used a scalpel. Conté was moved into high security solitary confinement under high watch in a separate facility within the Kingdom of Dawnstar. A month after this second incident, Conté was again missing from his cell. He was found back in his previous prison facility, with the body of the third major leader of the Twilight Dragoons brought in by Alexander Sky, the ex-Knight Jahanna Navis.
After this third killing, the Kingdom of Dawnstar requested the assistance of the Lock prison facility to deal with Amadeus Conté. Amadeus Conté was tried on 171 counts of Murder of the 1st Gauge, and was sentenced to life in prison in the Lock prison facility.
Known Capabilities:
Amadeus Conté is primarily known as a surgeon, and not as a combatant, thief, or mage, though he is known to have clerical knowledge within the scope of a skilled cleric. Conté has extensive medical knowledge of all sorts as well. It is likely that Conté is capable of the soul grafting procedures developed by researchers Falx and Sveran, however whether this is true is unknown.
It is unknown how Conté was capable of escaping his bonds and guards during his three escapes in prison. He had shown no previous experience of similar abilities or knowledge prior to his imprisonment.

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
Hm, I don't think I can keep up, most of my drawing recently have been learning or practice things that can't be considered "finished." Maybe when I'm more skillful I'll get back to this.

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
I knew there was something I forgot...
What happened in my case was that some things came up RL (the details of which I can PM you, if you want) which left me in no state to gather things before the deadline.

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
It appears that the opening post is slightly inaccurate : although the [per 8 weeks] prizecrafting is still unavailable due to material issues*, the figurine for reaching the 18 week mark** (one time occurrence, not per 18 weeks) is still available.
It can be pretty much anything, within board rules and reasonable size constraints. See thread for a general idea of what i can do.
So:
The Grimmace
Current run: 18 weeks
Longest run: -
Themes: -
*might be resolved at some point in the future, the hobbyshop that i thought closed had simply relocated into the most baffling location possible.
**originally 24 weeks, lowered to 18 weeks as per hereIt is more of a disclaimer than a name. Essay, Inc., or the like are all fine as shorthand.
Things i made from clay, wire & paint.
An opportunity to have your a bust of your character sculpted, details at the end of this post.
Currently 4/30 slots claimed.
