    Show

Most martial adepts have a list of what are known as "alternate disciplines". The typical example of a given adept does not have access to any of these disciplines, but specific members of the class may have knowledge of the discipline in one of two ways.

The first is to have neglected training in one of that class's ordinary disciplines. Any martial adept may choose to start play having no access to one or more disciplines that the class normally has access to, having been replaced by the same number of disciplines from the alternative list.

Any character who takes an alternative discipline for a class that does not have the discipline's associated skill as a class skill, loses as a class skill the skill associated with the neglected discipline, and gains the alternate discipline's associated skill.

The character may also trade proficiencies in weapons associated with the neglected discipline in favor of those associated with the alternate discipline. They can only gain proficiency in an exotic weapon associated with the alternate discipline if they lose proficiency in an exotic weapon associated with the neglected discipline, only gain proficiency in a martial weapon associated with the alternate discipline by losing proficiency in an exotic or martial weapon associated with the neglected discipline, etc., and in all cases can only gain as many proficiencies as they lose. They cannot lose proficiency in any weapon that is associated with both disciplines. They may trade in as many or as few weapon proficiencies as they like.

The other way to gain access to an alternate discipline is to train with a master of the discipline. A master is defined as one who can initiate 5th level maneuvers from that discipline. Training requires one month and the expenditure of 1,000 XP. When training is complete, the martial adept may add the discipline to the list of disciplines from which maneuvers may be learned with levels in any class that has the discipline as an alternate discipline, and may further replace any number of maneuvers already known from any class that has the discipline as an alternate discipline with maneuvers from the new discipline. Unlike the normal method of replacing maneuvers, however, any maneuvers lost must be replaced with maneuvers of a level no higher than the lost maneuver.

The martial adept also adds the skill associated with the discipline to the class list of any classes that have the discipline as an alternate discipline. The adept does not, however, gain proficiency in any additional weapons.

    Martial Practice

Pre-requisite: At least one level in a martial adept class.

Benefit: Choose one of your martial adept classes, and any one other class you have. Your levels in the second class stack with your levels in the chosen martial adept class for the purpose of determining your Initiator Level in that class. Maneuvers readied by that class that depend on Initiator Level therefore gain the full level in the other chosen class, rather than half, and when taking new levels in the chosen martial adept class, or any Prestige Class that adds maneuvers to that class, the full level in the second class may be added to the Initiator Level to determine the highest level maneuver you may learn. Your levels in the second class also stack with your levels in the chosen martial adept class for determining when you may swap out maneuvers known.

Normal: Classes other than martial adept Prestige Classes add half their level to your Initiator Level.

Special: The stacking for maneuver swap progression is retroactive. On taking this feat, you may immediately replace the appropriate number of maneuvers known with other, potentially higher level, maneuvers. You may not gain more than two maneuvers of any given level higher than you could previously learn as a result of this immediate swap, though you may count maneuvers as higher level than they actually are for the purpose of this restriction. You may also replace one of your stances known.

Special: A fighter may select this as a fighter bonus feat.

    Schools vs. Discipline

Often, many martial artists in an attempt to create something that is entirely their own will opt to instead take different things from different existing martial art schools and endeavor to combine them to fit his/her own vision what they believe to be the most optimal combination, and sometimes this becomes the absis of their own curriculum should they ever open up their own school.

There is a distinction between this and a brand new discipline in that a discipline represents a particular set of maneuvers and skills that belong to a single body of work and specialization, and are created pretty much from scratch. (or at least is different enough from the thing that inspired it that it can be considered it's own unique discipline), where as a school can be any combination of someone cherry picking disciplines and maneuvers to fit their needs.

The Temple of Nine, being canonically the most famous school, will probably be the most common candidate for would be dojo masters to draw material from. Having said that, the AoW catalogs a lot of less well known disciplines that can also help fill out any gaps that the creator might see in his school.

    Creating a new school

When creating a new school, the foremost question you must answer is, "who is going to learn this discipline and why?" When answering this question, think applied usage of this discipline as opposed to a specific combat mechanic focus. i.e. a school that is designed for say, pure self-defense might be primarily focused on setting sun, with some dancing leaf mixed in.

Focus on the specific maneuvers and on how you can get said maneuvers with the minimal amount of effort, as a lot of schools often try to be as efficient as possible when it comes to it's education curriculum. A military field officer training regime may very well include White Raven as it's base, mixed in with some other aspects like Twin Spirit to round out their officer's ability to lead.

another important question you must answer is at what level does this school become viable. After all, not everyone is going to want to think about a 20 level build. A lot of soldiers, for example, do not have time to become masters of their art, and really just need enough skill to do their job. So think about what it is these individuals who are learning this art is trying to do with it. Again, a law enforcer who might want to use non-lethal means to subdue the occasional drunk is not going to need to be a 10th level initiator. (Unless he expect said drunks to be high level masters themselves)

Lastly, you must consider the creator of the art. After all, there will be a point especially for the PCs that they might reach the upper end of the school's capabilities, and when that happens, the PCs will be faced with question of where do they go to continue advancing their art. This is especially true when a school was designed for a specific niche purpose that is meant for mass consumption. An 8th dan Karate master is not going to go to a McDojo in the middle of a strip mall to get his 9th dan belt.

More to come: samples of this
