Re: Warhammer 40k fluff thread VI: They see me Ward'en, they haten
I thought it was somewhat-heavily-implied in one of the novels that the Bluhd Rehvans are loyalist Thousand Sons? The red heraldry and, in the novels at least, high incidence of psykers, makes it not-unlikely. The novels do make up a lot of new information about the Ravens that isn't reflected in the games, which are arguably the primary Blood Raven information source.

Re: Warhammer 40k fluff thread VI: They see me Ward'en, they haten
I love creating my own chapters, etc, but I want to work within a framework this time. I want to play an already named chapter with its own heraldry.
Basically I want the following from a Chapter.
1) Can use Codex: SM
2) Doesn't use orange Company marking for the 6th (Bike) Company, or has lots of bikes in general.
3) Has awesome heraldry.
4) Has transfers or a shoulder pad mould that can be easily used.Last edited by bluntpencil; 2012-07-15 at 02:23 PM.

Re: Warhammer 40k fluff thread VI: They see me Ward'en, they haten
It depeneds. It IS heavily implied in the Novel "A Thousand Sons" which takes place in the Horus HEresy. But for the dawn of war novels? Not so much. Also, those ones are pretty terrible.
Claspedchurches: This is a mudstone dwarven fortress. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with bauxite, studded with ice, decorated with gold, and adorned with hanging rings of magma. This fortress menaces with spikes of steel, iron, bronze, and silver. On the fortress is an image of an image of cheese in pitchblende.
On the fortress is an image of a megaweapon in gold, silver, jet, obsidian and adamantine. The goblins are burning.

Guardsman ; "Yes, sir!"
LC ; "And he came into the armoury..."
G ; "Yes, sir."
LC ; "And took EVERYTHING?"
G ; "Yes... ...Sir."
LC ; "And then declared them relics?"
G ;" ...Yes..."
LC ; "Tell me, was he painted red?"
G ; "How did you know? ...Sir?"
LC ; "...He took my boltpistol, too."

Re: Warhammer 40k fluff thread VI: They see me Ward'en, they haten
I find it funny that a lot of prominent worlds / locations are named after 20th century scientists (eg. Schrodinger VII) and are not suppressed by the Inquisition. Or the fact that they even recall those names.

Re: Warhammer 40k fluff thread VI: They see me Ward'en, they haten
It probably doesn't have an in-universe explanation, GW hasn't exactly been creative when it comes to naming things. But if you want one, maybe the names are just dimly remembered as great people that served humanity. I'm pretty sure nobody knows anything about them, really.

Re: Warhammer 40k fluff thread VI: They see me Ward'en, they haten
Yeah, it's just author amusement. There's a mention in one of the Cain books about a planet/system called something along the lines of Aimsoboyard, Nothynere, Anutharock, 'named by a very weary explorator'.

Re: Warhammer 40k fluff thread VI: They see me Ward'en, they haten
Yeah, the Cain series is really full of those. One of my favoirites is "Nusquam Fundimentibus", which (with a bit of massaging) translates to "A*** End of Nowhere".

Reading Priests of Mars at the moment and had a reference to ships burning off the shoulder of Orion (probably done in by c-beams).
Also mentions that Sisters of Battle can get married.Princess in the streets.

Re: Warhammer 40k fluff thread VI: They see me Ward'en, they haten
Abnett's been talking about it since he finished Ravenor. But about four, five months since the offial announcement.
And Priests of Mars is really good - longer review on my blog if you want to know more.
One (relatively minor and contextless) spoiler tying in to the Horus Heresy:

Re: Warhammer 40k fluff thread VI: They see me Ward'en, they haten
Okay, does anyone know if Storm Wardens use Company markings? I don't think they use the usual markings.
If they don't, I'd certainly consider making a Storm Warden force.

Re: Warhammer 40k fluff thread VI: They see me Ward'en, they haten
Anyone read the Primarchs yet?
First story was amazing, second was a little meh aside from
(But that might just have been daemon trickery)SpoilerThe far-flung possibility that Ferrus may have killed Daemon-Fulgrim come back at him through the warp, before his own death at the hands of Fulgrim on Istvaan.
Reading The Lion now. Love his Capitol ship's name, but aside from that it seems to fail to bite me.

Re: Warhammer 40k fluff thread VI: They see me Ward'en, they haten
So, I've listened to it a couple of times now, once properly, and twice whilst painting. Malediction.
Minor Spoilers
SpoilerIt made me mad. It's got a big, green Dark Angel on the front. Except the Dark Angels are barely even in it. No. It's actually an Imperial Guard story. Don't get me wrong, I like the Imperial Guard. But I bought it for Dark Angels, and chances are most people will...And that's not what you get.
What it is...Well, it's real, Fifteen Hours type stuff. How much it totally sucks to be a Guardsman. Where you're running low on ammo and food, and so is the enemy...So what do Chaos cultists do? They build catapults and use your dead friends littered on the battlefield for ammo to throw at you. That's seriously messed up.
My very serious gripe aside from the marketing (it's not about Dark Angels), is that the Dark Angels are portrayed - again - like sooky little cry-babies with very little-to-no sense and it reminds me again why all Dark Angels who aren't the Angels of Absolution are just stupid.
Kind of significant spoiler (but if you're not planning to get it, who cares?)
SpoilerCypher is still in continuity. He still has the Sword that he can't use. And he's prescient (and it's not clear what the source for that is).
So, aside from the false marketing (it's about Imperial Guard, not Dark Angels), and the very poor ending. It's very good. However, if you've played 90+ hours of Mass Effect and loved it, and suddenly hate the entire thing because of 5 minutes worth of ending...Then maybe you should just click the second spoiler.

RE: second spoiler: Chaos did it. Always. Even if they didn't.
I've just finished Priests of Mars and found it fantastic, up in the top three i've ever read out of the Black Library. Can't say much because all I say is probably spoilers but loved the pretty much the entire story and can't wait for the sequel.

I loved it too, though it was quite weird reading it not long after seeing Prometheus. Still, McNiell's definitely my favourite BL author and PoM is one of the best 40k books out there.

Re: Warhammer 40k fluff thread VI: They see me Ward'en, they haten
Yeah, with the old fluff, having the Omnissiah actually be an ancient necron star-god was really cool, and always made me wonder if we were ever going to see a rebellion of Mars as the techpriests fell under the sway of the Void Dragon.
With the new fluff, you have to wonder why big E didn't just powerfist the stupid thing to death while he was down there. It certainly would have been within his capabilities.Claspedchurches: This is a mudstone dwarven fortress. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.
