Well...I was flying my ship to a place that doesn't exist anymore... and I got caught by this Small Moon's Tractor beam. Haven't been able to leave since. The old guy said he was gonna take care of it... but ..you know how that works. .

I Find that it isn't the forum that keeps us here, but its really the people. I mean.. I could play on the playground by myself..but I'd rather play with a bunch of friends on the playground.

Re: Why is this forum so popular?
Great comic making us check back often and great mods limiting the problems.
So you never have to interrupt a game to look up a rule again:

Re: Why is this forum so popular?
Why is this forum popular? First off, the forum centers around a humorous and well written comic. Second, the mods limit the problems. Then there are the friendly people in the forum, making you feel welcomed, meaning you are more likely to come back. Then there is the lack of mind control here, meaning that you are not forced to come here, but come of your own accord.
Yet another Touhou fan in the playground.

Re: Why is this forum so popular?
I for one believe it's the moderator's work. This is the only forum I can say I don't dislike the moderators on.
I've never had any trouble with a forum moderator personally, but every time I read moderator posts, there's always a tone of "watch it or I might ban you if I feel like it" between the lines. I've also seen some cases where people get banned quite haphazardly. Of course, they had been drawing negative attention to themselves, but the given explanations were along the lines of "I don't want that kind of people on my forum". All the while, I see other posters who, by virtue of being long time posters or (admittedly only in very rare cases) related to the moderators in some way get a lot more leeway than others.
That isn't okay with me.
Here, though, I see moderation that is consequent and always referencing rules as an explanation for taking action. I've never once seen a red post that expressed some sort of self-empowered approach to moderating, but instead, they always work as executive extension of the rules, exactly as it should be. The rules are strict, I admit, but I agreed to them when I signed up, so I will adhere to them; the rules isn't the problem.
Conclusion: Moderators shouldn't be chaotic good. They should be lawful neutral.
I firmly believe this is what has built the good community here. You can always feel secure. That is important.
EDit: Which of course doesn't prevent the moderator from being more casual when not acting in office, but that's a different thing entirely :)Last edited by Weimann; 2009-11-15 at 06:36 PM.

Re: Why is this forum so popular?
This site rocks because of the mods. They have very tight policies and actually enforce them. Occasionally I worry that the rules are a little too draconian (I'd like to discuss politics for instance), but am reminded that they're what keep the quality of the posting so high. If we let in politics, arguments would get heated. It's just not worth it.
Even if the web comic doesn't tons of traffic, people stay here because this forum is uniquely high quality. If you like what I have to say, please check out my GMing Blog where I discuss writing and roleplaying in greater depth.

Re: Why is this forum so popular?
Well, there's been two good comics around here, a thriving creative community, a good mod staff, and a warm user base.
All of which serve as perfect self-justifications for sticking around. Deep down, of course, they know that they just want to be close to the Skarn.Spoiler<-I won this from Dr. Bath.Spoiler

Re: Why is this forum so popular?
Yes, the mods here actually rock.
Although I am a little suspicious that after one showed up to assure us there is no mind control, we all immediately started talking about how awesome him and his ilk are.
And I'm not going to rest until someone gets the "Flowers" reference. C'mon, I've seen allusions to that game on these boards before. How to Play Rogues Properly:
