(Sarcastic luna is best luna, and the way Tabitha St germain just nails that line ... In fact, she does great work with Luna's voice this episode. Although she does sometimes go back to sounding like Rarity, or spontaniously getting a rather strong american accent on certain words.)

Other ep highlights:

All of Luna's rolling-eye expressions when Twi is trying to show her around, and of course, her trolling expressions at the end. Ohh, and her "I'm so happy" jump for joy at the end!

In fact, there are so many awesome luna expressions, I forsee a bunch of new ponymotes in the near future. Also, once I get the episode I'll be changing my avatar (sorry I'm a bit late):D

Actually, would that count as a spoiler?

Some other thoughts:

• "Goddamnit Pinkie Pie" seems to be my recurring thought when watching Season 2 so far.
• Fluttershy scene was best scene
• I had the feeling AJ was just enjoying being scared, once Twi tells her Luna is just trying to fit in AJ switches back to normal very quickly.
• "BEEE STIIIIILLLLLLL --IIILLL -ILL" ... EPIC REVEERRRBBB -- VEERRB -- ERRB!
• "Huzzah, how many points do I receive?" (She's SO HAPPY)

Luna must be seriously difficult to scare or spook. Look when RD makes that lightning right behind her, she barely even flinches. And when Fluttershy screams through the door, Twilight is wincing, but Luna is totally cold.

Makes sense, actually, considering how often she herself is the originator of the lightnings - some probably even unintentional, like subconscious magic. She's probably learned to ignore them.

Also, I rather liked the episode overall. Some very funny moments, some very in-character moments... and of course, Pinky Pie being Pinky Pie.

I would also like to commend the starter of this thread for knowing (unlike someone else over at Silly Board Games) how to write "19" (or "29" here) in Roman numerals.

Importent note: About halfway into the episode, there was a loud rumbling outside that shook the house. I could only assume that was the sound of a years worth of fanon shattering.

Observations: When luna started to refer to herself as "we", I thought that some freaky stuff went down off screen. Than I rewound it and cought her "royal we" bit.

Apperantly, a thousand years ago Celesta used a hammy voice. One could only hope we get to hear it eventualy.

Dashes Shadowbolt costume was a nice call back, considering they showed up for less than a minute in the season opener.

Pinkie derped up a few times this episode, mostly while eating. What wonderful captions to be had.

Also, Lunas " Yes, I could tell,by the adoring shreiks of childeren as they run away." should be put into the quotes section on tvtropes, if it has not happened yet. Going on there to check, and may add if needed.

Also, as for why Rarity was not to be seen: she was still recovering from sewing a towns worth of costumes! Being a dressmaker gives you a big oppertunity for moneymaking each year, I would belive.

First off, this dream took place in various points in time and locations. I think there was modern U.S., 18th century England, 20th century England, and Duckburg.

I was back in high school, and told that new findings have revealed that the Code of Hammurabi was in fact a memetic virus created by the ancient Babylonians to kill poor people. I of course did not believe this, and to prove it, grabbed the classroom copy of it, which looked suspiciously like a shoebox.

I was immediately overcome by a need for adventure! First, I sneak out of class to go to the bathroom, and the need subsides. But next period, the desire comes up again, and I need to do something even more risky! I sneak out of the lecture hall I'm in and go to the bathroom again, this time to the Admiralty Stall (Reserved only for officers in the Royal Navy. Why it was in a high school is beyond me.), a stall with walls much shorter so the person could see a massive map of the world on the outer wall. I see the map, and know I must see it all!

Back in the lecture hall, I am one of the teachers now, and we call on the missing girl. We look around, and Launchpad McQuack (or is it Mcpad? I forget....) exclaims, "She's gone!" Everyone panics and looks through the school for her.

It is now years later, and I am talking with an elderly man from Pakistan (the nationality is important for a later part of the dream I won't go over here unless specifically asked for it), who tells me the rest of the story. The missing girl had become hyper-addicted to adventure, to the point of not caring for herself. The final chapter of her life was spent sleeping with a sailor so that he would smuggle her onto the Titanic, where she died when it sunk.

There you have it, things you have posted in ponythread have directly led me to have dreams of people dieing in terrible ways. On the plus side, the rest of the dream went ok! Scrooge Mcduck was getting married to a Beagle Girl.

"Compels me to do what?" Igneous asked, looking up from the cube he was now fiddling with. He'd begun with a couple of twists to break up the completed puzzle that Sek had done. Not too many though, he'd never been too good at these things.

Unfortunately, backtracking his actions was proving to be a problem and each turn he made was making the formerly uniform sides turn into a riot of colours once more.

OOC: If it does hatch, it should probably be RP'd by whoever it "imprints" on. That probably means whichever pony it sees first. I don't have any preference as to who that is though (happy to do it if you want, happy to let someone else do it). I do find the image of Charger or Iggy having to care for it to be somewhat entertaining though.

If it hatches though, Igneous is going to be very surprised, as he was deliberately not trying to hatch it. He had two goals when he knocked the thing over, the first was to see whather Tinker, like any good crazy scientist, could identify the object from the sound it made. That gave him some faith in her abilities. The second (which only came into it retroactively once Thanqol identified it as a dragon egg) was to try to find out what a potentially restricted magical item was doing in the shop, and to see if it was there for suspicious reasons.

Rewriting Reaching Midnight, now that I know her proper persona! “I can barely believe that we did that.” Trixie let out a soft, embarrassed groan, as she remembered their actions of the previous night. She looked at Twilight, slowly trying to extract herself from the cuddling, slumbering Luna.
“She just looked so lonely at that point. It sort of reminded me of you, Trixie, when you came back to Ponyville.” Twilight said, laughing softly. “Besides...it wasn't bad, was it?” Trixie paused for a moment, thinking, and then shook her head, a smile spreading across her face.
“No, it really wasn't..” Trixie shifted slightly, and winced, as the Princess cuddled against her moved just enough to start to wake her. Princess Luna let out a soft groan, her body beginning to move. Her head raised slightly, her eyes blearily looking out into the bright room.
“WHO DARES TO WAKE THE PRINCESS OF THE NIGHT FROM HER HARD-EARNED SLUMBER?” She let out a gasp, as the Princess realized where she was, who she was with, and what they had done. “OH OUR GOSH, OH OUR GOSH, OH OUR GOSH”
“Rainbow Dash did that when she met the Wonderbolts for the first time.” Twilight pointed out, clearly amused. Trixie grinned at her flushed teacher.
“Was that enough of a report for you, my beloved teacher?” The blue unicorn said teasingly, nuzzling at her. Luna let out a happy whimper, and nodded fiercely. Trixie grinned with pride, finally having an advantage over the mischievous Princess of the Moon.
“WE WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND OUR THANKS TO YOU BOTH” A brilliant smile spread across her face, and the tired Luna quivered with delight as Twilight joined in, rubbing at the other side of her face. “WHILE A REPEAT OF THIS INCIDENT WOULD BE UNLIKELY, WE WERE DESIROUS OF EXPERIENCING IT IN IT'S SINGULARITY”

I want to do this for every single Luna fanfiction ever now.

You know, wherever I went on the internet, I always tried to be the pleasant guy. The "hey, that's pretty cool" guy.

And now I'm here and everyone's already like that.

I'm suffering a crises of identity, guys.

It was a perfect night for observing the library. The stars were up, it was lovely and warm, and even the normal inhabitant of the bushes was out at a recital, so I manged to get the best spot for observation. As a result of this, Whadda has decided to speak in the third-pony when announcing her plans to pull out her binoculars and hunker down.

No results. Whadda has to pack it in just before dawn, but she knows that her persistence shall be rewarded! Whadda is now going to save her third-pony perspective to avoid creeping out the ponies at the newsstable.

Whadda is back for another night of dedicated watching towards her goal of finding this unofficial library contributer! Although I am hoping to find the library bandit tonight because the weather team does have a thunder storm planned later tonight. Combined with the fact that there’s no recital tonight....

That was the most miserable night of Whadda’s entire life. She is now soaking wet and will have to go to work like this! At least Whadda has gotten most of the mud off herself and dried off her hat. Most of the scratches were superficial anyway. “Whadda has now decided to obtain a hot drink at the newsstabl-” Whadda announced aloud, before having her speech cut off by the greatest thing Whadda has ever seen in her long and varied career of reporting. The most perfect, beautiful, and snow-white pegasus that Whadda has ever seen stood, buying a copy of “Trotter” of the newsstable. “Careful Whadda, you know how many celebrity ponies are actually horrible under those looks.” Whadda mumbled under her breath, but apparently not quiet enough as the pegasus turned, amazingly of course, towards Whadda with the newspaper wrapped under one wing and said “Eh? I didn’t quite catch that.” She said in a voice, like to all that could hear it was a melody of angels. “What’s your name?” She asked, taking Whadda by surprise. “Whadda Scoops the reporter has decided to state her name to the pegasus as being Whadda Scoops!” Was what my mouth fired off before my brain had a chance to intervene. An awkward moment passed slowly. “You’ve got only one chance to impress her so get it right!” I mentally screamed at myself. But what was a smooth, innocuous comment that would impress her, obviously a mare of the greatest taste and sensibilities?

Then my keen reporter’s eyes scanned over her and my pupils widened in shock. I knew what I had to do. “I’m reporting on the story of library bandit you know. So, how was the library last night?” I said as it were the most normal thing in Equestria, to the greatest of my ability while a living dream was in my presense. I noticed her reaction, her complete freezing with the smile still on her lips, that only confirmed further what I knew. “I.....Don't know what you’re talking about,” She said quickly, with a voice that sounded better then an orchestra of angels. “Why would you possibly think that?” I hated to push her like this, but even beauty to launch a thousand ships must take second place to the truth. “Well, as I’ve been in hideout last night there’s a numerous amount of clues. Firstly, your wings are still sligthly wet, you’ve done a good job on drying them, but they still have a slight fluff. Secondly, on your hooves are a combination of grass with the slight magical tint that comes from being near a concentration of magic, which only exists in two places in ponyville and if you’d been seeing Zecora, somepony would’ve brought it to me. Thirdly ,there were a variety of other clues, slight tells on your part when I mentioned it but most importantly, I saw a white feather caught in the window sill last night.”
Seeing her clear discomfort at the masterful summary of the facts was obviously causing her some distress, and what lady of undeafeatable beauty wouldn’t be distressed at these facts? So I decided to wrap it up quickly. “With all these facts in place I’m afraid there is only one conclusion I can bring from this.” I paused, dramatically pointing a hoof at this paragon of everything beautiful and said “You might have seen the bandit!”

Midnight:
“So then what happened?” “She had to go to work, so she scheduled an interview for noon. But enough of that, how’s your day going?” “Well, your most recent manuscript is really good but....” I lower my voice slightly for empathsis as I recited Momma Luna’s letter. “But at least it’s only for a week.” “That sounds like a really mean things for your mother to do.” “I suppose the situation’s desperate, But I can deal with it. How bad could it be?” The town clock then rang twelve times. “I suppose you’re right. Good luck!” “See you later.” I said, trotting away. Mulling over my last words, “How bad could it be?” I repeated to reassure myself, heading towards the town hall. My question was swiftly answered when I saw the upper-most window break in the town hall, observed as something flew towards me, and was surprised when the mayor landed on top of me.

However, allow me to change my position a little, because after a bit of reflection I think I may have missed a fine point and may have been a little too stubborn.

It occured to me that maybe you're right that filly/colt can be used of an adult pony, as a form of address. So for example, Twilight is a "mare" because she's an "adult", but she's also a "filly" because she's a "ms." not a "mrs." (assuming of course that Twilight isn't actually secretly married ) While we don't know for certain, it's quite likely that the mayor is or was at some point married, so she'd be a mare in both cases (because she's an "adult", and a "Mrs.")

Would work on the same principle with "stallion" and "colt", even though there's not really a way in English to distinguish between a married and an unmarried man when addressing them (AFAIK anyway).*

So it would be wrong to say that the mane 6 are fillies in the same sense that the CMC are fillies (they're not children), but addressing them as such in say a greeting would be perfectly acceptable.

Advance releases of screencaps/videos/summaries ought to be kept spoilered until the associated episode passes its own spoiler cutoff.

Avoiding "spoiler" material entirely is not possible while still discussing the show. At least if we want to avoid the page of nothing but spoiler tags that must be painstakingly opened one by one as you go through the page. And for what, things that most of us are going to already know?

This doesn't quite work. You can't base spoilers on whether everyone is willing to click them or not. Saying "why spoil stuff most of us already know anyway" answers itself. Most of you can have your fun. The rest, who have politely asked and then been granted reprieve, have a right to think y'all will respect your agreement.

A system is only as strong as it's weakest component. I use this phrase everywhere, it seems. Here, 'common knowledge' is only as common as what the least informed person knows. Clicking the spoiler button when posting, and having to manually move your mouse rather than just holding the down arrow, just doesn't compare to possibly having something ruined for you.

Lets not let ourselves get polarized over the whole spoiler issue... compromise is very key to maintaining healthy friendships. *So sayeth the writings of Twilight Sparkle, prophet of Princess Celestia. *Personally, while I can understand not wanting to see discussion of the episode itself until you've seen it, I think that discussion of leaked content is okay. *The creators of the show intentionally released it early to try and help build excitement for the new episodes, so why begrudge them that?

That said, I understand that some disagree with this stance, and would prefer to avoid seeing any leaked content at all until after the episode has aired, and I don't think the inconvenience of clicking on a couple of (properly labeled) spoiler tags is worth alienating them over it. *"No unspoilered discussion of the episode or any leaked content more revealing than what is in the TV guide entry until X hours after the episode airs" indeed does not seem too unreasonable.

I think we've more or less agreed that 72 hours is a good baseline? *Personally, I wouldn't mind if it were an even shorter window, like 48 or 36 hours, but I suppose I can understand if others feel that would be /too/ short of a period.

I want a shorter window, but having been in the position where I had to wait two days doe to random catastrophes over and over and over, it's just an extra bit of consideration. I'd say Monday, but then folks will start at 12:01 after sunday, when it's still like, 4:00 pm Sunday in other time zones.

Also agreed. Waiting until Tuesday to discuss episodes outside spoiler blocks (and throw up new Avatars ) is perfectly reasonable, and properly labeling spoiler blocks is something that I'm going to be extra careful about from now on (I wish that the forum used the option where a spoiler block has to have a title).

Hahaha, that was absolutely brilliant. Luna was just great, I was really happy with the characterization that they came up with. Mostly because it wasn't meek, helpless Luna like in so many fan personas of her. She was full of, well, bombast. A little too much to begin with. But there was clear 'I want to make right, and make friends, and please, please approve of me, please?"

Oh, sure, myself, I might need to go back and rewrite a couple of things in my earlier stories that feature her (Reaching Midnight specifically), but really not all that much. She's not that far off from what I came up with, particularly at the end of the episode. Definitely need to change the dialogue, though.

Does anypony else just enjoy getting up early on Saturday mornings to watch cartoons? Makes me feel like a kid again, and I notice I actually have way more energy than when I stay up until 4:00 a.m. and sleep until noon (as per the typical grad student schedule).

Luna uses magic much more freely than her sister. maybe that's from spending a thousand years on the moon? Nice effects, although the implications of being able to summon stormclouds/lightning at will could probably put the pegasi out of business.

look closely. She's not exactly 'using magic'. It's an ambient efect. The power flows with her mood, and she can control it, but it's easier just to let it be.

This and the volume thing plays into the God Empress bit really hard. They (the Sisters) have so much ambient power that it's easy to just to forget they are still ponies. For the first portion of their rule, they were the gods that came after such titans as Discord, Mask, and such.

It's entirely too easy to rationalize Luna's behaviors. As a goddess in the flesh, such volume and displays were mandatory. Once rule was established, they had to keep up traditions or appear weak, inviting another Assault on Olympus, as it were.

And then the Moon Wars. Luna didn't want to be a Goddess, she wanted to be a pony, with friends. When those friends consistently spurned her due to her station, she snapped. Fear and respect, and all that.

Celestia had to use the element of Magic, and Friendship, to defeat her sister, which implies equality in power - certainly see that Luna is the more tempestuous, stereotypically witchy, fey of the two. She is the sorceress, to Celestia's hierophant.

Once defeated, Celestia began to question her ways and traditions. She had to, since her ways lost her her sister. Thus began the refinement campaign; the "Princess" began speaking softer, calmer. She became a ruler rather than a deity. She fights even now against the ingrained traditions of her people, because outright saying "stop worshipping me, I don't want to be a goddess" just proves that she is indeed a goddess.

This level of respect is evident throughout; it's why Noghtmare Moon has a statue. Luna's warform is just as important to pony culture (if somewhat demonized) as all the angry versions of the Chinese and Japanese gods are (I want to say names, but it's been years). Nightmare moon is sill a feasible force in the collective pony psyche, despite being beaten. It probably took a couple generations for Odin to supplant Tyr as the head o the Norse pantheon; there is even conjecture that the Fenris Wolf myth was made after the fact to explain the regime change (with Tyr no longer being fit and all, being one-handed).

And now, Luna returns. Around the guards, an authoritarian tone is expected; they are trained to respond to it, and couldn't dare speak against it in any case. And we have seen how Luna addresses those she knows personally- she greets Celestia quietly, and even Twilight just gets a "yeah, I know you. Star Swirl the bearded. Twilight Sparkle." because Luna knows them already. It's the equivalent of the President speaking normally to his guards, and pompously to the crowd, all without leaving the podium. She never used the Royal We & Volume with Celestia. I'm certain that when Twilight writes to Celestia about it, she will be all sorts of chagrinned, for not even noticing.

It also lends credence to Luna having only dim awareness during her exile; no consciousness, no walking around on barren rock. Just being locked in some nebulous moon dimension, vaguely aware of the passage of time, maybe working great arcane workings to bring the stars into alignment...

Well, I guess I know my next project after Titanium and I finish up Rarity's Night.

Alternately, have you looked at the rest of the body? That stuff is MONSTROUS when seen objectively.

I do the reverse. I define myself in positives, and my task comes in choosing which positives to add to my character. Virtue ethics are out of vogue in contemporary philosophy, but I find myself having the most affinity with them by far. I want to be a better person, so I ask myself, what does a better person need? Courage? Skill? Discipline? I chose the qualities that I admire and respect and add them to myself. Morally, I try to be the person I would like to be making the decisions. I don't define myself in the negative because I don't feel inclined to respect people who would make the wrong choices enough to accept their world views as anything other than lacking.

Problem with 'fighting dirty' as a phrase implies that, when a fight comes up, you want to be in it to win it. You don't. A fight, no one wins. When a fight happens your objective is to walk away safely to a place where there is no fighting. Doesn't matter how that happens.

I disagree with your premise, because we have different definitions of fight.
In any street confrontation, you are in it to win it. Wining is living. Losing is dying. Literally; you only lose I'd you die, any form of surviving is winning. Here, we agree, because the easiest way to win is not get physical. Not engage.

The "fight dirty" bit presupposes that all other opioid have failed. If you are In a life-and-death struggle you don't wan't to play fair, because the guy who is shooting at you, or tryin to knife you, or swinging a bat at you isn't going to. If you are getting physical, and attacking someone when it's not a fight... You're being a jackass.

It sounds petty and pedantic, but it's an actual, honest to goodness good bit of advice. It's a very specific version of "if you're going to do something, do it right." Don't get killed because you don't like getting hit in the groin; kick the guy and run. Punch one of the guys surrounding you in his throat so he can't fight, and run.

My dojo is fantastic. They focus infinitely on the details that matter so that in a grading test when they ask you to perform a reverse back kick that you've never done before you do it first try and break a board.*

I'm not too sure about this episode. *It's nice to see them taking the Luna-out-of-date theme that pretty much everyone had and going with it, although I'm not sure how much I prefer her revealed personality. *(Note that it isn't bad, and it fits her well. *I'm just not sure how much I personally prefer her over others now.)

Probably the biggest problem I had was the "adults" (Applejack, Colgate, Mayor Mare) being scared and cowering just like the children. *I could easily see Pinkie and the kids screaming and running, then laughing it off afterwards. *However, when you have someone like the Mayor hiding under her hooves, it's kind of hard to take it as 'everyone in town was just enjoying being scared'. *Even if everyone in town does typically overreact to everything...

Also, I noticed Scootaloo dressed up as a werewolf. *Sweetie Belle was probably the vampire next to her. *However, they were hanging out with the pegasus in the astronaut helmet - I didn't see Applebloom anywhere.
