Mynxae's Maliciously Magnificent Random Banter #183
I've been waiting to do this for a while. Hope everyone enjoys the thread. :smalltongue:

The Not-So-Random Rules of Random Banter:
Spoiler
Show
1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.
2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".
3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.
4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.
5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."
6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."
7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.
8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.
9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.
10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.
11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.
12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.
13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.
14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.
15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

That's because there are many varieties of champagne (aka sparkling white wine) which all taste different.
But, on the whole, it's very nice.

Today I finally reached my savings goal for the pre-ordering of a Wii-U by virtue of betting on myself against a moderately sized group of people who didn't expect me to do something so insanely improbable of myself they actually paid happily when proven wrong.
And well, knowing one very particular song and letting my hair be horribly altered.

Champagne is gooood. Beer bad. Vodka is amazing, tequila is the second coming of the alchohol god, and wine is for the french.

Yeah. I certainly like white wine in general more than red, so I've never really come across a champagne I haven't been all for. Wit hthe exception of my first sip at nine or so for New Year's. Then I was all like "ugh. Wine is ucky!"
ION: So it turns out MoonCat is more tipsy after a glass and a half of sparkling white wine than she is after a large cup (tumbler?) of brandy. Interesting to know. :smallconfused:
IOON: My brother is coming over from California tomorrow! YAAAY!

Wine can be fun. it depends. Also, everyone should hop on chat, it's been ages!
And I plan to. Altohugh this time around there will be school, so his usual showings uo at one in the morning might prove disadvantageous.

Re: Mynxae's Maliciously Magnificent Random Banter #183
I, on the other hand, have decided to refrain from the consumption of alcoholic beverages such that I will remember what people get up to at parties such that I may blackmail them.
The real reason is of course that I just don't like the smell of alcohol, and my brain tells me that if something smells bad it probably tastes bad.
-
Re: Mynxae's Maliciously Magnificent Random Banter #183
I once (read: last night) got slightly drunk on NyQuil:smallconfused:
I would think it was just tiredness and/or the virus I had, but I had been more tired before, and had been more sick before, and that was the first time I felt like that.
So, yeah...
I got drunk. ON NYQUIL.
edit: Just to clarify, I only took the standard dose.

Essentially cough syrup and so, like cough syrup and its potential for abuse, a high dosage or sensitivity to the ingredients can cause a reaction other than an alleviation of cold and flu symptoms.
Nyquil is also supposed to make you drowsy so you just sleep through it/sleep it off, though on some people I believe it has the opposite effect, sort of like how benadryll will either make some people sleepy or some people pep up but rarely will they not have any reaction to it along that axis.

*chuckles* I only know of Nyquil being a cough medicine from The Big Bang Theory.

Yes. If you have any care for wine. The ~5-10 dollar bottles of non-champagne sparkling wine because of not being from that region of France you can acquire from liquor stores in the U.S., and I presume something analogous in Canadia, are actually usually fairly good as well.

I'd enquire into your blackmail operation, but that's considered rude.
Anyway... I too can blackmail people without alcohol being involved, but embarrassing moments are most readily observed when the person in question is intoxicated.

Your eldest brother's engagement party I believe. Or something like that.. If you had a phone, then I would've texted you embarrassing things once or twice. If you actually had a mobile phone. :smallannoyed:

Also, champagne is...meh. Lightly bitter is how I'd describe the taste. It's almost more of a feel than a taste, though, it's not all that flavorful. I recommend good tequila instead. :smallwink:

Champagne is a place in France. Officially, no one is supposed to call sparkling white wine champagne unless it comes from that place in France (at least where they can enforce it), but guess what? Nobody cares. For all intents and purposes, they are one and the same.

Bitter? Not flavourful? What champagne have you been drinking?

Rawhide is correct. Nobody cares except for wine makers in Champagne and the village of Champagne in Switzerland.
The name is protected by the 1891 Treaty of Madrid and was reaffirmed by the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. As the United States was not signatory to the Treaty of Versailles, they were allowed to continue using the term until 2006 when a court ruling decreed that only wine producers who had approval prior to 2006 could continue doing so and that no new approvals would be given out.
But as I said... Only wine producers actually care. Everyone else just wants their imitation champagne to be sparkling despite where it was made.

Wrong. The best alcohol is good tequila. Followed closely by dark rum. But still followed.
I recommend Cuban rum. That has nothing at all to do with me being Cuban. Nope. :smalltongue:

Eh, those aren't the right words. It's not really bitter so much as...the flavor that stands out to me is...I suppose I'd call it slightly metallic, and that's the first word that came to mind to describe it. I mean, it's not really a sweet taste, and definitely not savory, salty, or sour, so... :smalltongue:
And it's definitely not bland, but my experiences with champagne have made me feel the flavor was best described as...light or subtle. It's late, language fails me. :smalltongue:
EDIT: Also, I was not recommending tequila to Zodi because I was trying to get her drunk, I was doing so because it's my favorite alcoholic...thingy. And yet I know so few of you will believe me. I really don't deserve this Lothario reputation I've somehow developed, I swear. >.<

I quite like them. The series draaaaagggggssss on a bit too much for my liking and there's some unfortunate gender related annoyances, but overall they're pretty good. The prose is very captivating; the imagery is very vivid, and I really like how myths and rumors are handled very organically in the universe.

Well, wine buffs care. Champagne is often, though by no means always, of a higher quality than other sparkling wine. If it's produced just outside the region using the same method then it'll probably be pretty much the same, but it might equally just be some ghastly sparkling plonk in a bottle, from any old grape or terroir. There is a kind of minimum quality associated with the Champagne label, which is what gives it its cachet.

Re: Mynxae's Maliciously Magnificent Random Banter #183
Pretty much that.
I may not like champagne but it's in the same category as a cornish pasty, Melton Mowbray pork pie or stilton. That's a specific thing, with a certain level of quality guaranteed.
I know what those things taste like like and if I was expecting a stilton and got some other blue cheese packaged as stilton, I'd be pretty cheesed off.
damn right pun intended

Your pun may have been intended, but it was downright terrible. Worthy of execution if I do say so myself.
True, I do admit that there would be a certain quality associated in order for them to have the right to deny the name to every other country on the planet by international treaty...
But still, most people don't care. They want food and drink made to a high quality that is what it says it is, preferably without added salt.
Anyway, I'm going to bed because it's almost eleven here in Australia. Good night everyone!

All I know is that there is this thing called the Tapestry, and there are people who are trained to literally burn people from it, effectively unmaking them. And that this is amazing and I love it.
Ok, minor lie, I also knew it dragged on for quite a bit (and with the author dead, it's kinda hanging in the aether, so to speak).
All I know about Tequila is that there's a really annoying harlot named after it, and it's got a funny rhyme. One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor~

What sort of bet? At first, it seemed like you were saying they were betting that you wouldn't preorder a Wii U, but that makes no sense.

I know. I won't say it, but I know. And let's just say that it's...well, no, it's not out of character, but it's something one would assume is out of character.

Totally understandable. You americans and your one dollar bills. OUR vending machines are powered by COINS.
Incidently, this means the lowest you can, ahem, tip, is 5 bucks.

Same is true here in the UK, but £5 rather than dollars.

That reminds me - Once, I saw a vending machine that took 1s, 2s, and 5s. Yes, it took 2s.
It also gave change in dollar coins.
What.

Well, we have the Toonie. It's a Loonie but different.
The loonie is what we call our dollar coin, since it has a loon on it. Toonie is a two dollar coin, and though it has no loon on it, it's related enough that we give it a nickname regardless.

Why must there be a 5 hour time difference between Ohio and the UK? And why must I have school? It makes it so hard to catch my British friends on Skype.

Yes: also, wine-growing is an eminently fickle undertaking; small differences in the climates [number of sunlight hours, rainfall, temperature of days and nights during ripening] and soils of wine-growing regions makes a huge difference in the character of the wine. Champagne has a region uniquely suited for growing the grapes for champagne. France -- given its proximities to two seas, its funky topography, and Europe's weird variety of soil types -- has a lot of microclimates.
The regional right to use the appellation also carries with it a number of rather strict standards of production, to which imitators are not bound: so yes, indeed, bona fide Champagne is far far less likely to be ghastly sparkling plonk [love that phrase].
To say that nobody cares is foolish.
There's a few things from the last thread I'm going to reply to as soon as I figure out the best way to quote from a locked thread

Does this mean you have no bills lower than a 5? Strange. I like it thought. I often wish the US used more coins. They're just so fun.

There's an ice cream stand in my area that gives change only in half-dollar coins and two dollar bills.

In the UK there's no note lower than a fiver, which is about $8(US). We used to have pound notes, but they were phased out long ago. We have an extensive range of coins below that value, though.

As far as I know, no. Euros are pretty great though. Uhm, we have 1,2,5,10,20 and 50 cent pieces and then pieces of 1 and 2 euros. The best part is that each country has a whole array of own versions of the coins, there's quite a few people trying collect all the different versions and there's already a ton of them.

No, I manage to make enough people bet that I couldn't play a particularly (in)famous Korean song, which me being myself seemed extremely unlikely. The result was enough funds for me to reach my savings goal. Well, that bet and one relating to hair dying.
